If people don't love others, only love themselves and how someone else makes them feel, why do they make sacrifices for love?

Love often involves a commitment to the well-being and happiness of the loved one, even through difficult times.

Love is often characterized by compassion, empathy, and a desire to support and care for the loved one.

For example, if someone contracts a progressive illness, why would their partner stay with them and spend everything they have to care for them, sometimes for years, even until the very end?
How does that benefit the caregiver? Do they go through that pain, anguish and hardship to feel good or do they do it out of love for their partner?

There are people who will run into burning buildings to rescue complete strangers. There are people who will risk their lives to rescue animals.
I would argue that such love is based on compassion, not on self-reward.

The thing about love, even though it is unquestioningly real, is that a person can't fully experience is unless they acknowledge its existence. And some people are too immature, inexperienced or damaged to understand true love.

But it doesn't really address the point. You say why would a person care for their partner if the partner has a progressive disease. But but but that partner can make them feel something and they feel that regardless of the health/illness of the partner. So I don't think you're convincing in your argument.

You have used a lot of fancy words but didn't really address the point.

When I say people love themselves... They might believe they are being selfless toward their partner. They might think it's unconditional. But they are still getting as much as they are giving.
