What makes couples decide to be in an open relationship after they were monogamous for a long time?

I know some monogamous couples that are now in Open relationships and open to swinging as well, They all said they are happy with each other and it made their relationship better than what it used to be to be before. It shocks me when I meet couples that are this way , The one couple wanted to swing with me and my girlfriend at the time and we both said No way , I said I wouldn’t be in a relationship with anyone , if they wanted to go screw someone else period. To me that is just FWB’s , So Would you stay with your spouse , if they all of a sudden wanted an open relationship with you, or would you end your marriage immediately?

This is exactly what happened to me. My wife and I had been together for roughly 18 years between dating/marriage. I never had any sexual feelings about guys until one day, I did. She told me I should go explore my sexuality and opened our marriage.

At first I was pretty hurt because I had always been monogamous. Eventually though after a lot of talks, i ended up trying it. I dated a guy long distance for a year and that ended poorly so i nearly swore off the whole thing. Months later a guy reached out to me on a dating app i was on and we hit it off pretty quickly. Now he and i have been dating for 2 years. We all love together at this point and i just either hang out with both of them or, for alone time, I split my time between them.

Its not a path I would have seen myself doing when I first started dating my wife, but I'm in a good place now I think.

We all live together at this point and I communicate well anyway so she would know about him even if we all weren't living together.

Oddly she wasn't ok with it at first even though it was her idea. She thought I'd just go try having sex with a guy and see how I felt. She didn't expect a relationship to form. Today she's perfectly fine with it and it's like having a bonus parent to help raise the kids.

Maybe boredom is part of it, but in my experience, it happens when the woman is cheating and is afraid of getting caught, and so wants to legitimize her cheating by making her marriage or relationship 'open"; OR the woman had just seen a a few guys she wants to fuck without having to worrieng about getting caught.
