What's the point of an open relationship/marriage?

I think the very idea of having an open relationship or marriage is absurd and for all intents and purposes a waste of time.

I'd never turn a fling into a fling with responsibilities, that sounds insane to me.

I guess I get it in a sense the two people in the relationship agree that you can’t have fulfillment in one person so they open up their Horizons to being open. Personally I couldn’t do it though because I just feel like relationships like this open up someone still being dishonest because you opened up a can of worms in terms of what is allowed. I would be confused in a relationship like that about what is and isn’t allowed tbh

In my case, I think there are too many rules in those relationships (as odd as it seems) and I'm not the best example of someone who complies with rules...

Also, I'd never accept to fulfill any responsibility (especially financial ones) towards a woman who's not even loyal to me.

I totally understand that perspective. Like what is the point of even staying in a relationship , creating a family etc when you can just do the same single and less stress?

Exactly. At the end if the day, tbose relationships are just an friends with benefits with couple headaches. *facepalm*

Additionally, the saddest things I've seen involved people in those relationships.

In one case, the guy got a cancer, in the other one the woman suffered a car crash and got a broken spine... In both cases their partners ran away at the toughest moment of their lives.

Open relationship is totally retarded when both people can sleep around. It only makes sense to have one side open. This allows a higher status person to be happy with lower. Sure love conquers all Yada Yada bullshit or so it should but that's not how the real world works.

I believe the point is for both members of the marriage to enjoy sex outside that marriage but without the cheating, skulking, hiding, etc. For some it works. They enjoy the benefits of marriage and the benefits of a broader sexual landscape.
