Do the wedding vows, "In sickness and in health, for better and for worse" mean anything to anyone, anymore?

They do to me!! Sadly, I've never been asked or had the chance to take them but I gladly would, if given the chance!
Love, REAL, undying love, doesn't seem to matter to many people anymore. They get married one day and the divorce papers are filed a week later!!
Lemmie tell ya about something that happened to me 43 years ago.
My best friend, Carol, eventually became my girlfriend back in `83. Due to a chemical imbalance, every so often, she suffers a nervous breakdown. From what I've been able to figure out, it's once every 18 months.
Well, shortly after we started seeing each other, she had another one that put her back into a psych ward about 2 miles from her apt. for a while!
I made plans to go see her the next time she was allowed to see anyone. Tues. and Thus. twice each day so, the following visiting hours day, I got up early, rode the buses (two of them) to her place and found the door locked from the inside so, my key wouldn't work. So, I went round to the side to the fire escape, climbed up to the 2nd floor, discovered the window was unlocked and went inside. As I was gonna see her at both visiting hours each day, I'd take over something to eat.
I'd leave her place and walk the 2 miles over to the hospital and see her for about 2 hours. Then I'd walk back to her place, eat, take a nap, of sorts, get up and walk back over to visit her and then walk back to her place, catch the bus and go back home. I did this twice a week for at least 2 weeks until they decided she needed to go to a psych hospital about an hours drive from my house for the next 6 months.
During her first leave of either 6 or 12 hours, I asked mom to drive me down to get her and leave us on the North Side where we'd just walk around and explore because it was a new area for her. We got back to my house, eventually where we waited for mom to get ready to take her back. Then, we drove all the way back to drop her off and planned to do it again for her next leave in about a month.

Anyway, the point to the story is that, even in her darkest hours, I stuck by her side because I was very much in love with her!! No! I'm NOT a fucking hero and I'm NOT a martyr!! I'm someone who knows what it means to be in love with someone and what it means to stick by them even in their roughest of times!!
Since then, I've been through A FUCKING LOT of heartache and bad shit and have grown considerably!!!
And, the final point to all this is that I'm not one to just give up on someone

during their rough patch!!! The point is, to a certain someone I love VERY DEARLY, even if we HAD been married by now, YES, I would gladly give you the time you need and YES, I WOULD stick by you no matter what!!! Although we're NOT actually married, even if all we can be is great or the very best of friends, I'm still gonna be here for you because I care VERY MUCH about you!!! Even as friends, I would still abide by those vows!
I REALLY wish you all the VERY best!!! I'll ALWAYS be here for you!
