2. Do they think it's fun?
3. Would you like to be one, and Why/Why not? (I'm talking about all kinds of monk/nuns type. It can be Christian, Buddhist, Jainism or any other religion)
#Monk #Nun #Monastery
There are many reasons. Religious devotion is certainly one important reason. But some people might also seek a different lifestyle.
I'm actually kind of ambivalent about this. There are many things I like about the idea of being a monk. For example:
- I love the sense of community and communal form of living
- I love the calmness and slowness of this lifestyle
- I love the medieval architecture
- I love the singing, the Classical Latin etc.
- I love the idea of being able to work both intellectually and out in the community. For example many monks/nuns are writers or even part-time journalists. Others are in academics and do scientific research. But they also go out to do very hands-on work, such as helping out in charities etc. I really like this combination.
However, I won't ever become a monk, and that's mainly due to two reasons:
1. I'm not religious
2. I'm not willing to live without a romantic/sexual partner.
I think what would be really cool is if there was some kind of monastery-like community but without the religion and the religious rules.
It's interesting to me if it's like Buddhism. Because that idea of living life simply and having a great time and learning how to be happy with that seems like a very positive experience to strengthen the mind and make it more healthy.
Also I like that whole Shaolin Zen Buddhism thing which focuses not only on building a healthy mind but strengthening the body as well.
But I'm too lazy to bother with it. :-D I enjoy too much drinking and seeing naked ladies too much to become a proper monk.
1. Probably tradition. Very few people who didn't grow up learning monk/nun ideologies would possibly not become one. Also, some people become monks because they believe they are reincarnations of past munks.
2. Fun may not be the right word to describe their experience and opinion on this lifestyle. Rather, they believe it is meaningful and valuable, so they embrace it.
3. I have always had this particular interest i hindu monks in the Himalayas, and it seems like a very comfortable lifestyle. I would not mind being one, but I think monks have certain restrictions when it comes to females practicing monk rituals and beliefs.
Maybe they don't like how capitalist and materialist the society is now? Maybe they want something more "pure" / real.
I wouldn't become one, it's too demanding like "job.

Well I dont know now, typically get rid of confusion but now it is like indulgence. The earn so many driving Bentley, fuck women and women need to raise them
There was at one time where I thought about it because people here are so annoying and rude. And the stuff you see on the news isn't making it any better.
I thought maybe living a simple life with no technology and just working hard would be more ideal. Then I found out these guys don't eat meat so... There goes that idea.
It really depends which type of monk you wants to become. Some Christian monk types do eat meat. Many of them eats a lot of lamb, chicken, turkey, beef etc.
Christian monks are monks living in monastery. They do eat, sleep, pray, work etc. in their monasteries and do charity. The difference between a Buddhist monk and a Christian monk is that Christian monks believes in Jesus, heaven, usually can eat meat (depending on the branch), don't shave their heads etc. Some even grows beards. Buddhist monks believes in rebirth, a world without god, shaves their heads and are vegetarians.
Monks and nuns who are Christian:
Christians have their own monasteries where they practice their own religion. People who join Buddhist monasteries are Buddhists.
They do it for various reasons, but the main one is for spiritual reasons. It's not a fun experience from what I can gather. There's no luxury, you have long, busy days and have to become poor, and you can't enjoy the pleasures of modern life.
Simples...
They’re admirable in a way, which makes them cool. (Along with the epic outfits. lol) But I wouldn’t be able to handle either.
I’m curious why it seems like almost all nuns are women and almost all monks are men.
Monks and nuns are the same thing, but the word "monk" is used about men living in monastery and the word "nun" are used about women living in monastery. It's how the words "actress" and "actor" are the same thing - but are used to tell if the person in that job are a female or a male.
Oh, I thought they were slightly different.
There may be some differences. Monks wears male clothing and nuns wears female clothing. Nuns traditionally also tends to work more frequently with needy women. E. g. giving pregnancy advice and doing midwife similar tasks, since the women don't want men doing it. The genders lives separately in the monastery. But apart from that, it's basically the same.
What's a monk's job? = Monky business. /// I see too many of them being busy with ''worldly'' stuff to take them for serious. Any religion, by the way.
Age 13, I wanted to Be a Nun, hun. But in Finding a First Love, Told My Lord Above: "I can't, God."xxoo
1. Probably tradition or honor.
2. I don't really know, some do, some may not.
3. No! I am not interested in living like a monk. I am not religious and definetly do not want to follow such strict "orders". :)
Nah. Life is the great indulgance; death is the great abstinence. Being abstinent in life is not only unnecessary and stupid, it goes against every fiber of my being.
No because I love dancing and getting high too much.
I thought was like a spiritual cleansing of the soul to make you focus your mind and appreciate the life given to you in general.
They are probably either involuntarily celibate, sick of people's head games, or asexual.
What do you mean with "sick of people's head games"?
Its just the priest class of that society, just like there is a warrior class, merchant class, agricultural class etc.
Usually it's white people who get redundant from their job
Gays, lesbians. What happens in the Monastery/Convent stays in the Monastery/Convent.
I think it's just cause they're obsessed by their religion
