In quantum physics, a quantum fluctuation is a temporary variation in energy at a point in space due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. This principle states that it is impossible to simultaneously know precisely the position and energy of a particle. Consequently, even in the so-called "quantum vacuum", particles and energy can appear and disappear spontaneously.
According to certain cosmological theories, such as inflation theory and quantum cosmology hypotheses, the universe could have emerged from a quantum fluctuation in an unstable vacuum state.
In this state, the vacuum is not really "nothing", but a field of extremely low-energy potentials. A quantum fluctuation could have caused a sudden expansion of this field (a "big bang"), creating our universe.
