So, according to 1 Samuel 18:27, David killed 200 Philistines and presented their foreskins to a king to marry his daughter... wtf?

Philistines were AT WAR see "1Samuel 4:2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield" so killing 200 men in battle was necessary.
The way to prove to saul, that he killed 200 would be to bring 200 heads, but that is a big wagon load. So thumbs, but how would they know it was not from jewish corpse victim... so needed foreskin to prove it was philistine.
Also saul hoped david would DIE in battle see "1Sa 18:25 Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’ ” Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines" end quote, but david killed double.

Tnx for mho!
The whole Bible is one big wtf.
It was a different time. We shouldn't judge the actions of the past by the morals of today.
Sorry, this story is completely disgusting to me. How in the hell do you teach this to kids in Sunday school?
By telling them the whole story and not leaving out the unsavoury bits. Whether you're religious or not this was the attitude of the day and should be taught as such
Just like Lot's daughters getting him drunk and having sex with him because they thought God destroyed humanity? Nice... No wonder so many religious nuts justify molesting and abusing little girls and women.
The Bible is weird
thanks for mho

The Philistines worship the cock. They're cock worshipers. They have a cult phallic obsession, so stripping them of their "foreskins" is to collect their religious symbols. The Philistines use to carry around phallus shaped jars which some archaeologists speculate the Philistines might have stuck their dicks in as part of some sort of religious ceremony (a foreskin), while others say the holes in the jars are too small for regular penises.

So if you killed two hundred Muslims and collected their moons, it doesn't mean you chopped off their ass cheeks and put them in a bag, just as if you killed two hundred Christians and collected their crosses, or two hundred Americans and collected their dog tags. What was sacred to the Philistines was taken from them in battle.
It's definitely something i read recently apparently biblical texts of all religions were written in the very early era when some religious texts, for whatever reason, had overly odd use of "such descriptions" aka graphic.
I'm so glad I basically don't have interest much for scripture. 📚
Yeah, sounds pretty normal. Your religion isn't fucked up at all.
@OneViewpoint You can be certain, that your religion (whatever it is) is just as bizarre as any.
@Bricealan ,
That would be no religion. So impossible for my religion to be fucked up. Only me. I take full responsibility.
Holy sh!+... this is why I don't have one!
It's allegorical and a poor translation.
David basically proved himself able to lead and defeat an army, hence eligible to be royalty.
So, why does every translation refer to presenting the foreskins of 200 men? 🤢🤮
Yes, that’s in the Bible. Did you want to know more?
No, not interested in the least! Too many hideous and disgusting stories like this one. Putting lipstick on a pig doesn't help!
Oh ok. Then why ask a question about it?
I'm interested in how religious adherents justify lewd and disgusting behavior as part and parcel of their belief system.
Are you really interested in why people have Faith. Or are you judging them anyway
I asked a question about a specific verse. This passage speaks of a savage act to impress a king to win approval to marry his daughter. Where's the "faith" in this?
Faith is all over the Bible , but you are not interested in exploring it. That verse references a cultural ritual which at the time meant much more to the people who it was shared with then it does today. Yet even after cultures change the Bible still is as powerful as ever
So, your argument seems to be that was in the past, so deal with it... and look for "faith." That's not very encouraging or inspirational at all.
It’s not an argument. And you already said you don’t feel curious to learn more about the Bible. So I didn’t see the need to be encouraging.
Religion shouldn't inspire and encourage? Is the purpose of religion to instill fear and control people? Oh wait... mission accomplished!
“I'm interested in how religious adherents justify lewd and disgusting behavior as part and parcel of their belief system.”
That tells me you are not open to encouragement. You already have made up your mind. So any attempts at inspiration would fail right?
Nope, freeing people (opposite of control) and delivering them from slavery is a main theme of the Bible. I understand you wouldn’t know that if you never read it.
I’ll stop replying and as you asked anon I assume you didn’t want much of a serious answer anyway.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid.
Oh please! I have read it! In the US, politicians in bed with Christian leaders are passing laws to ram their religious beliefs down people's throats (book banning, forcing prayer in schools, abortion laws, anti-LGBTQ+ laws, etc.) So, stop preaching bullshit about "freeing people" and how a "main theme" of the Bible is "delivering" from slavery. Slave masters and segregationists used stories from the Bible to promote racism... and misogyny. Too much pick and choosing amongst denominations... everyone is a fan of their own team (Catholic, Protestant, etc.). There should be absolutely no confusion about truth. What I see is infighting and moneymaking...
Ok... take care!
Circumcising 200 men... an ugly job ! LOLOL
Um actually 200 corpses.
I hope he had enough.
Was there a question, there?
