When the sole provider loses his/her job (let's make sure we include the stay at home dads...), then what happens to the family? Starvation? Government assistance? Imposing upon extended family/friends?

Many stay at home moms have an education and could reenter the workforce if necessary. If not, the husband would have to find another job (might be lower paying, might have to struggle for a while but that's life), or find assistance. It's not the end of the world- the husband could eventually get back on his feet. This is not a valid argument that no mothers should ever stay at home to raise their own children.
