Today is the national Independance day of Tunisia, so here are some facts about my home country!
Carthage, a prectigious empire in the Ancient Times
Carthage is the seat of the Carthaginian Empire, known as one of the most powerful empires in Ancient Times. It was destroyed by its rival city, Rome, and in fact, the only reason English is now spoken everywhere is because Carthage lost, pretty crazy huh? Also, everyone knows Barcelona! But nobody knows it was founded by Carthaginian Hamilcar Barca, father of the very own Hannibal. ;)
"The only real democracy in the Arab World"
Tunisia started the Arab Spring in late December 2010, to get rid of its corrupted leader Ben Ali. However, unlike most of the other Arab countries, Tunisia is said to be the only country that succeeded in its revolution, called the Jasmin Revolution: a revolution for freedom and liberty. Tunisia is now the only real democracy in the Arab world.
Oldest University in the World founded by a Tunisian Woman
Yes! The first University in the World was founded by a Muslim, Arab, Tunisian woman. Fatima Al-Fihri, who had migrated from Qayrawan in Tunisia, to the city of Fes in Morocco, had founded in 859 what is known as the oldest existing, and continually operating educational institution in the world: the University of Al Quaraouiyine
Star Wars
The famous scenes of Tatooine from Star Wars were filmed in a southern city of Tunisia called Tataouine. Yes, it is real!

Harissa
If you like chili and spicey food, then you will LOVE harissa. It's the most used condonent in Tunisia and it consists of crushed peppers. Needless to say, it's pretty hot. Harissa is so famous in Tunisia that it's almost part of our identity.
2015 Nobel Peace Prize Winners
Despite thedifficulties Tunisia faced after the Revolution, including several terrorist attacks, Tunisia strives for freedom, equality and peace. Here's the outstanding performace Tunisian singer Emel Mathlouti gave in Oslo during the Nobel Prize event, a song dedicated for freedom.
