There has been something that is bothering me lately. Around where I live developers keep putting bigger and bigger houses on some really rather small plots of land. These houses are unnecessarily large, are having a hard time selling, and are so out of place to the point where they are actually eyesores and I mean that these get really unpleasant looking looking. Now people keeping building bigger and bigger. I just want to point out that this is not necessarily a good thing.
1. Houses are expensive
This really shouldn't surprise anyone but just in case you were aware. Houses are expensive. Disregard the initial cost for a moment and just Factor in Heating, Electricity, Water, Property Taxes, all that jazz. Then you have the fact that a good chunk of these expenses go up in cost the larger the house. Then add in the price of the home and think about how expensive the mortage will be. The larger the home the more money it costs and whats the point of paying for extra rooms you don't use.
2. The Average Family is getting smaller

So while average house size is on the rise the average size of a family is going down. Not only that, a lot of people are deciding to simply not have children these days. In the past people got along fine with more children and smaller houses so we can get by just fine with less children and smaller houses instead of less children and bigger houses.
3. Houses are a whole lot of work

Seriously, Houses are a lot of work. You have to keep them clean. You have to do the occasional repair. You have to mow the grass. You have to take care of the flower beds. Rake the yard, etc. Now the thing is that even with a smaller or moderately sized house these things take up a lot of time. With a large house they take up even more. The fact is that upkeep is freaking exhausting. A smaller home will save you some time and energy.
4. Smaller House does not necessarily mean bad or ugly house

That is nice looking and pleasant house. If you had one child or no kids you could easily be able to fit all your things in there. It works, it looks nice. its got a nice yard. If you need a bigger house you can get one but if you don't need anything else just take something THAT FITS.
5. It's better for the environment

The fact is that building and maintaining a home doesn't just cost money but it also uses up energy and resources. The fact is that owning a smaller well built home is better for the environment than owning a large home.
I just want to take a minute to say I'm not saying go out and buy the tiniest house you can. I'm telling you to buy a house that fits your needs and not a house thats way too unnecessarily large, Its expensive, it affects the environment, and its a real lot of work.
