Gillette “The Best A Woman Can Get” Commercial *Worth Watching*

Saw this one on YouTube.

I was expecting to laugh but then the parody showed some very serious clips. The worse one being a nanny throwing a child face first into a crib and walking away.

I personally had to deal with some double standard bullshit before. One memorable event was a woman who tried to get violent with me in a bar hoping that I would fight back and get kicked out/arrested.

If we can criticize men why can’t we criticize women?

I heard about the Gillette commercial, I looked it up and I can’t for the life of me understand why people are so upset. “The Best A Man Can Get” has been their slogan for as long as I remember, this was a socially conscious spin on it. It wasn’t meant to say ALL men are whatever way, it was to illustrate those that don’t act properly (and they ARE out there), and it was encouraging the rest of us to step up and say or do something rather than stand idly by. I think that’s an admirable message. It doesn’t mean all men are evil or all women are perfect... it’s a play on the slogan. The slogan was never “The Best A Woman Can Get”, so commercial like that will be made. You have to be able to accept criticism or a request to maybe look at things from a different perspective without jumping to “straight white men (or whoever is in question) are under attack!!!” Worst case scenario just pay it no mind, what’s the fucking problem? And look, I understand you don’t want double standards, and I readily admit that there are plenty, and they frustrate me like they would any other man. But that’s up to Venus Razors or Maybelline or some other female product to do. What really needs to happen is open minded dialogue. Everybody put their swords down and just listen and accept what the other side is saying. Anything else is just divisive.

That Gillette commercial was one sided virtue signaling plain and simple. It insinuated that most men have a “boys will be boys” problems but now the socially conscious progressive men are stepping up because of the blessed #metoo movement.

Are there shithead men out there? Absolutely. But that commercial was painting a broad brush. Anything remotely criticizing women would be protested and banned immediately.

I will have to admit that the marketing ploy was brilliant. Millions of people are talking about their brand. But personally I will never buy any of their products again. Never (feel the same way about progressive auto insurance). I’m not the only one either.

Well, I guess you’re seeing something there that I’m not. I didn’t take it as a shot across the bow on a personal level. Those of us who don’t act inappropriately know who we are. I just rewatched it a second time, I still can get behind the message. I think you’re viewing it from the negative behavior it portrays, and ignoring the good. Look at it this way: do you think it was bad that guy stopped a random kid from getting beaten up? Or the guy who stopped his friend from making a creepy advance on a woman? It’s challenging men to be better, to hold ourselves to a higher standard, as well as others, and to make an impact when that standard isn’t met.

There are just societal dynamics you need to accept to understand where the commercial is from. As men, we have a lot of values we’ve dragged with us from a different time. The social climate is rapidly changing and trying to move toward true equality. Women aren’t kept in the kitchen, just like black folks aren’t held as slaves anymore, but to say that everyone is treated equally on an individual level by all other individuals would be foolish to say. There are no laws on the books endorsing, but it happens in people’s individual thoughts and actions. Sometimes it might feel like we’re overcompensating in our response, and maybe in some cases we do, but I’d rather overcompensate than under compensate. Like everything portrayed in that commercial IS real stuff that actually happens. And like Terry Crews said in it, it’s up to men to hold other men accountable. I’m sure we could make a legitimate female version, but the dynamic of society is a little different both historically and currently. If you’re not that guy, give yourself a round of applause, all they’re asking you to do is pass it around and try to effect that type of change in our peers. I don’t know man, I can appreciate the message, I’m not offended at all. And if someone wants to make a comparable one for women, that’s fine, I’m not saying they’re perfect

i literally saw no problem with this video (just like the gillette men's one) until there was no resolution. the men's one at least had guys stepping in and saying "dude, you look dumb". this one could've been a lot better if it were mirrored better.
overall, i don't see the issue with it. us women need to do better too. it's that simple. if i get mad at this, that means i'm denying that it's happening. i don't take offense to this bc that's not who i am personally and i know that. now that i'm in the "mens" shoes, i still don't see the offense. oh well. maybe im a bigger picture type of person.

There are 2 differences:
1. That is still advertising Gillette and not a brand you always use so it isn't a betrayal.
2. You don't see tons of other content saying the same thing about women and knew that the advert of THIS product would at least not bash you for being a woman. The outrage wasn't isolated and sudden. Had this advert came out in the 90s, no one would care because #metoo and the constant addition of the word "toxic" before any masculine trait wasn't thing.
In fact, it DID come out in that time and MEN LOVED IT.
