Animals don't talk because they can't talk, they don't talk because they don't have high enough intelligence to understand communication.

The cow wouldn't tell you to not eat it because of the moral implications and its will to live because the cow doesn't understand either of those things, the cow wouldn't even understand that you understand what it is saying or that what it is saying is somehow useful to you or going to change your mind or make you feel guilty.
It would only make sounds in fear for its survival as a basic instinct, the same way they do now.

If the cow COULD talk it would need to have close to human intelligence, in which case it wouldn't be saying anything but plotting your murder behind your back !

I'm a dairy farmer, and trust me, they really wouldn't. Literally the only thoughts going through their head is "hungry" "scratch me" "chew chew chew chew..." "Pooping 🐄💩" it's crazy, a newborn calf can breath, stand, and eat sometimes within minutes of birth. Then they never get even a little smarter

I think if they could talk, they could communicate to us things that they'd rather do. I don't think sitting in a pasture or whatever it is, is what they WANT to do. I'm sure they have hopes and dreams too, the hope not to die, I'd imagine

They would probably understand that its the food chain and that if humans dont eat them most likely they will die at the hands of a more vicious, more gruesome predator... that would most likely eat a peice of their leg while the cow is still alive (much worse)

At least this way cows are special to the human diet, other animals are just useless and die everyday and some even go extinct... cows have a purpose, purpose is important
