The way some men dance is intentionally "mocking" of dancing in general. When I used to go clubing when I was younger there where one or two friends who couldn't dance but would instead "parody" dance moves as their "dance".
I could imagine, if I still was in touch with those friends, that if they still danced the same way now at 30 the did when they where 15 it would look much as you describe.
Maybe find out what he thinks of dancing, ask him to give you "a private dance" (he possibly could surprise you by being a good dancer when alone). Then you could say, "why don't you dance like that when your out". If he does the old dance you know and loath, like Michael22 suggested, joke "oh... that old thing"... "you do know that looks a little silly in the 90's don't you?" *with a gentle and loving smile*. See what he says.
Good luck.
ps. Those people copying your husband might just be the "mock" dancer types, people who have no moves of their own so they "parody" others feeling the laughter they get is aclaim when really they just can't dance.

You have to remember that the only real thing in this world are emotions. If he's having fun, why should you spoil that?

Break it to him nicely. as a joke at first but then say that his dancing could use to tweaking. see how that goes.
I am a horrible dancer, though I didn't know it until my wife let me know. We were having a couple cocktails and after some laughs she jokingly showed me what my dance moves looked like. We had a good laugh, but she got her point across.
