Why are security guards usually such creepy losers?

Question

Everywhere I've ever worked, the place is always "guarded" by some skeevy security guard who thinks he's a whole lot cooler and more important than he is. Usually it's either an old guy on a power trip who's way too nosy, or it's a young guy who goes around telling everyone that he's  right on  the cusp of becoming a pro bodybuilder, right after he gains about a hundred pounds or so. I think they either know they're losers and lash out at the world for it, or they're genuinely clueless and really do believe they sit atop the local food chain.

I was a security guard for seven years and I assure that I'm neither a loser or a creep. 80% of my tasks was emailing corporate headquarters and filling out paperwork for accident reports. I also worked surveillance and used catch MANY employees at the mall committing internal theft there was one store that suffered$500,000 shrinkage loss!. The worst part of working the job is dealing with medical emergencies like someone having a heart attack or a child falling down a flight of stairs and splitting their head open. All of which I've witnessed and dealt with. Some of the male security guards who I worked with kind of had a hard on to throw their weight around and apprehend shoplifters but later on when they realized how hard it was to catch some of these people who would run away to avoid being arrested they calmed down a bit and were able to handle the situation with a bit more tact and diplomacy. a couple of people who worked with my team actually went on to train for the force and became legit police officers and only one of the team had a criminal background and was later fired.

Lol, I worked at a market an 2/3 of the security guards were really hot, and all of them were really nice. 😂 But that's just one experience, I haven't worked anywhere else where there were security guards.

I was an 0331 infantry machine gunner in the Marine Corps; I currently work as a security guard and am on track to be a U. S. Marshall. But yeah... I am totally a loser. You judge other people without knowing the first thing about them. You are a spoiled brat who was handed everything in life. A guy who I worked with was a fellow Marine. Everyone thought he was an asshole with a God complex because he took his job seriously. But he was in the second invasion of Fallujah and was honored with a bronze star and purple heart. Hold your tongue because you don't know a damn about other people nor life. Come talk to me after you move out of your parent's house.

Most contract security companies hire losers cuz they pay them shit money , most of them get a power trip thinking they have authority over people , but when push comes to shove if something bad ever happened they would be running also, I only have respect for trained Armed security that had to go through intense training to get hired

Nobody really hit upon the actual answer. It's REALLY easy to get hired as a security guard. It's the one job I can rely on getting hired for almost immediately after getting a background check and paying the fee for a license. You just need a pulse to do the job. And the pay is pretty good for an unskilled job you can get right away. $15-$30 depending on experience, the nature of the post and whether you're armed or not. It's actually harder to get a job at McDonald's.

That's why you get the losers here. They're failed wannabe cops. And remember that cops are usually assholes. Yeah, you get some of the guys that wanted the authority or the power trip here. You get losers, slackers and girls who became moms way too early.

Of course not everybody is like that. You also get the retirees who do it for the extra pocket money who wanted something to do and get paid for it. And others take the job more seriously than others. Some guards are actually functioning adults who can both chew bubble gum and walk at the same time.

I actually like the work. I'm built different. I'm an extreme introvert. I like the silence. I can be alone for a long time and can handle the boredom of doing literally nothing but stand or patrol. COVID was a nice relaxing vacation where I got to remote work (different job ofc, can't do that as a guard.)

I actually dislike the posts where customer service is sometimes required. I can do it, I'd just rather not. Put me in a box alone with my thoughts and I'm happy to be paid for it. I'd rather be bored than hassled with customers or running food prep on my feet all day or having to clean an entire department by myself -- while not getting paid extra for it. You want me to get up and walk around checking the building so I can stretch my legs? I'm your man. My sleep schedule is a wreck anyway. So being a night owl who gets to be alone at night isn't so bad.

Also, management sometimes look the other way if you're reading a book or on the phone, just so long as it doesn't interfere with the checklist of things you're supposed to do or it's just really early or late and nobody is around. They don't see you messing around, it's not their problem.

In England, it's because a lot of them think that being built, and being the perceived 'hard man' makes then desirable to woman, that somehow because they are the way they are that ALL women like them... it's really quite annoying, but in all fairness, London is changing a lot, bouncers are doormen, and are a lot nicer and security guards in shops are just too old to walk...

Poor vetting of potential candidates before hiring. You should really blame the company that hires them in the first place. Poor pay is also a contributory factor. Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

with what they get paid, and the responsibilities that they have you generally are not getting someone from a SWAT team.
They could be police wana be's, but can get hired on for any number of reasons, or that is all they can do.
At least they are working.
But yes, I agree with your observation.

Its a boring job. They have a lot of responsibility but not a lot of power. People think they're a joke and often treat them accordingly. Its understandable why they'd be douchey.
