If someone tells you that they are from Scotland, what are your first thoughts about them? Does anything in particular spring to mind? What do you think of the country itself?

Since I've actually met a couple of Scots during my time in the UK, the first thing that you spot immediately is extreme accent that makes it very hard to understand what they're saying, to the point when you start to think they're speaking some language that is loosely based on English.
Prime example:
It also makes one wonder how do they even understand each other. It made them laugh when I asked that question.
Other than that I've found them to be okay lads that can be good drinking buddies.
The Glaswegian and Aberdonian accents can actually be difficult for others Scots to understand. The latter actually sounds like the Polish language at times. There have genuinely been times where I've had to translate what one Scot is saying to another. That's how different the accents can be from the West coast to the East.
Which really is a mindfuck for me in a sense -- it's a tiny country. How is it even possible?
I mean, my country has 11 time zones, yet even folks Kaliningrad and Vladivostok while may spot some differences in pronouncing and accents, won't ever have problems understanding what other person said.
Well, at least they're decent lads and good drinking partners :)
Could visit dentist more often though, but I typically remain silent about this one.
People who act like scotland is a souvereign country which it is not. It's like when bavarians say they aren't german. I don't see why scottish people want fo be special so badly.
We will be independent very soon
Thank you very true and we want all our oil money back as well

Dwarves in fantasy because they are often given a Scottish accent. Lol But realistically, kilts and bagpipes come to mind and the Highland games which gives an image of manly men. Although I've been there and it seemed similar to England and Wales, but people had a different accent.
Things I think of:
Tattie scones, shortbread, John logie baird, glasvegas, belle and sebastian and the proclaimers, kilts and bagpipes, Rangers not Celtic, billy connolly, ally mccoist - we have a dream... a dream come true, Hogmanay, swearing, st andrew, braveheart and william wallace, Catholic v Protestant, still game, wee neds, acdc, and macaroon bars.
I have yet to experience Scotland or any of Britain first hand, but coming from a Canadian with Scottish, Irish, English, and Welsh ancestry, I love Scottish culture, especially Robert Burns, pipes, the Clan histories, and yes Gordon Ramsay haha. I hope I get to visit there sometime. Specifically Barra, and Isle of Skye since that's where my ancestors are from
Things that come to mind
- The Picts
- Sheep
- Sex with said sheep
- Hating the British for about a thousand years, being okay with it now
- Kilts
- Hadrian's Wall
- Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Bunnahabhain aka my favorite beverage
- Gingers
- Gross food
- Highland games
that they all have auburn hair, play bag pipes and have excelent taste in liquor and pets that resemble the loch ness monster.
The Scottish guy from Samurai Jack! Lol
Chirpy, wholesome and tanned with an amiable outlook towards Englishmen.
Cold, wet and windy most of the year, but beautiful when it's not. Friendly people with wonderful "accents", and Scotch. Lots of really, good Scotch, and golf. Oh, gorgeous red/auburn haired girls !!!
When/if someone tells me they are from Scotland, I think of kilts, natural redheads, people that cannot tan, and a rather green pastured place. Windmills, solar power, clean streams and sheep. Lots of sheep...
A bunch of culturally rich people with brilliant accent and great cuisine.
And also Hating English people for little to no reason.
Red hair and accents, honestly. Also llamas or alpacas, for some reason..
