Even though those people are poor, they still need to have at least somewhat decent life. And for that, you need to feel good in your body and you need to have some free, fun time. Make up is a way to express your creativity and to feel beautiful, which is essential for people's mental health. Another example of this is how people who live in the slums have satellite TVs in their scrap metal huts. They barely have a chance of significantly improving their life, even if they work tirelessly all day every day (which many of them do). So instead of pointlessly saving up for a better life, they spend the little extra money they manage to earn on the small things that make them happy, or improve their standard of living just a little bit.

Well first, not all makeup is expensive. There are a TON of affordable makeup options at the department store. That being said, in the images you've supplied, they are not wearing the same type of makeup you see in stores. It's more likely that they are simply using natural ingredients that they've gathered and made themselves, which wouldn't be expensive.
The idea of "makeup" has actually been around for thousands of years and used for different reasons outside of simply improving appearance. It has been used for religious and cultural reasons all over the world. The ancient Egyptians are a prime example of this. It's actually a pretty interesting topic to study. :) https://people.howstuffworks.com/about-makeup1.htm
Poor people are poor people wherever they are in the world.
Why the focus on "3rd world countries"?
If anything, makeup in "3rd world countries" are cheaper than in "1st world countries" due to locally-produced brands being far cheaper.
I suspect you've never actually traveled to a "third world" country. If you did, you'd know that , surprise, surprise, people in these countries own mobile phones (the smart type), live in condos, own cars and bikes, and eat quinoa, etc.
Are you trolling? These pictures are not people who spend $60-$70 on make-up. They are mostly people who have had a tilaka applied to their faces because they are Hindu. Tilaka are not make-up but they are made from sandalwood paste and other coloured pastes. It is not expensive, in India one can buy a bag of sandalwood powder at many shops and supermarkets quite cheaply.

Very cheap non-branded makeup is widely available here, even more than branded makeup products. In extremely poor families girls normally own very less makeup too, like only powder, eyeliner and lipstick nothing more. Whereas the kind of makeup you see normally contains far more products.
Makeup can also be made from very natural ingredients, like Kohl is easily made at home. If I'm not wrong, girls who can't even afford to buy any cheap lipstick buy colorful sheets of paper which costs close to nothing, and they press their lips against it to get a colored stain.
Beauty is a big thing. Not everyone can afford makeup but everyone can come up with ways to beautify themselves. The make up they use is cheap and sometimes even free. While in my country an average make up product cost 5-30€, henna in India cost around 0.01€ if I'm not wrong.
Many would make the make up themselves through natural sources they can easily get from trees, bushes, bugs, etc. Creating the make up and using it would be part of a religious ritual, as that kind of make up have religious meaning for many of them.
Also the kind of make up they have is not that difficult to get, humans have been using tribal and religious face paint for years. The kind of make up they use is pretty similar that the ones used thousands of years ago.Makeup is not necessarily expensive.
In third world countries, people are more careful about how they allocate money. They have to think more carefully about big purchases.
You will see a number of people from third world countries that have computers and Internet access. Services tend to be cheap because the labor is cheap. But manufactured goods tend to be a similar price as anywhere else, especially if it's imported. They just have to be very careful when making a major purchase like that. It's not something manufactured from company..
It's blend of natural herbs hand plucked and dried..
Those Indian Beggars are actually Religious Sages.. With wise knowledge!.
They can beat you in debate on any topic about life..
They don't live a materialistic life..
They keep it simple.
And spend days meditating at one place.
Like sitting at a place for +72 hrs.. And meditating!..It's made with natural ingredients that are free/ dirt cheap
Or if they are urban and just a little less poor they buy cheap varieties of actual makeup. I have seen bottles of nail polish being sold for some 20₹ which is 1/5th of a dollar.I came from a 3rd world country and let me tell you it's not as expensive as they are in Norway.
1. You can buy quality drugstore make-up around $4 to 6 here. (that's a huge difference from Norwegian price)
2. Not all people from a 3rd world country are poor.
3. And not because they are poor they shouldn't be presentable or artistic with their face.
I seldom use make up but I don't judge people who do - whether they are in the upper or lower class of soceity.I hope you're just joking.. But if not
1. Makeup in 3rd world country's are probally made with natural ingredients.
2. Just because you buy the most expensive makeup products you can find dosen't mean all makeup is expensive everywhere. Not every makeup brand costs $60. It's really not that hard to wrap your head around.
3. Just because someone lives in a 3rd world country or is poor doesn't mean they don't want to look good. Not every 3rd world country is strucken with extreme poverty. The kinds of "makeup" you see in these pictures are free. The juice from berries growing wild. Charcoal, or lampblack. Ochre, from powdered stones. Chaulk dust. They don't buy it in the department store, in a thousand different shades.
Umm their makeup is made naturally from like plants and stuff and therefore don't belong to a brand which make it cost less.
Besides I think the first pic and the last two belong to a small tribe of Indians that call themselves the Angori. I may have spelled that wrong, but anyways the white stuff on their face isn't makeup it's Ash from dead people.1. So you're asking why they use $60-$70 makeup, while showing pictures of people who are clearly not wearing that. Misleading.
2. There's a difference between poverty and extreme poverty.
3. I live in a third world country. Not all brands are expensive. But I'm pretty sure you don't have to live in a third world country to know that.
4. Pretty sure there's something you're trying to say with this question because it's pretty much common sense.Poor people tend to use cheap makeup brands, so they likely aren’t buying luxury brands. If they do get luxury brands, it could be from sales or knock offs. In some cases, they could be making their own pigments similar to gals in jail using pens, markers, kool-aid powder, whatever they can to achieve the look they want.
Well I am sure the going rates in those countries is far less and they most likely when using actual makeup use cheap brands but that aside a lot of what is shown in those pictures you posted I would suspect is homemade face paint and not makeup in the sense of the stuff people buy in stores here
They are not beggars, they are called Sadhu also know as Ascetics. They are not wearing expensive makeup. They use natural ingredients on their face for religious reasons.
Only when I thought how can somebody be so dumb to ask the weird questions here and I saw this question lmao.
Third world countries have rich people too and they have the "middle class" who aren't that poor either (too the price are different there so if you buy a foundation 15 euros in Europe in Vietman it would be 3 euros for the same exact product).
Either by using the cheapest they find which is indeed very very cheap but also crazily harmful,
Or by making it themselves which can be way healthier than the expensive brandsYou're a moderator and an influence and you posted this?
I'm pretty certain now the titles on G@G are meaningless.Wow. Questions like this show a persons lack of world experience. Make up in a professional photo shoot? The psychology of donations? The face a lot of this “make up” is basically mud paint? Stick to your sheltered world.
its probably homemade paints not expensive makeups you buy at the store. Cheapest make ups are from $1.00 in America..
It's homemade. a lot of them come from natural products with high pigmentation like say turmeric or charcoal.
