A 22-year-old woman says she was asked to leave her gym in Konstanz, Germany, because her clothes were too “revealing” and were “confusing the men.” Marny tweeted a photo of the “revealing” outfit showing that she was wearing a crop top that showed a few inches of skin.
She explained that a female gym employee came up to her while she was on the treadmill and told her she “she couldn’t train like this.” Not knowing what she was referring to, Marny said she just looked at the woman in confusion. The woman then told her it was against gym policy for women to work out in only a sports bra and for men to work out in tank tops, adding that her top was “distracting” other gym-goers.
“I was shocked, because it wasn’t a sports bra. And even if it was, why not?” “I felt like I had been thrown back into the 1800s,” she told the Evening Standard. Marny, however, tweeted that she didn’t want to call out the gym by name because it’s a small, local business.
“My one goal was for people to actually see that these things still happen today and that it’s important to pay attention to that,” she wrote.
She does plan to cancel her membership, though.

It's a bit rich to come from a woman, aren't they usually the ones complaining about men coming onto them while they are in the gym or the street etc, if then she expects to be treated fairly she herself has to behave with a certain level of respect for those men who are also using the gym I personally think that the men were right to bring it up as an issue. I mean you can't complain your getting hit on by men and then complain that you aren't when they stop or complain that you get hit on for what you wear but then complain when you wear something that other find distracting.
I highly doubt that photo you posted is similar to the outfit she was wearing generating a bias in your voting poll. I mean I'm all for women who want to wear revealing clothing, I do like it but there should be some form of standards that exist in public. Well I don't think that outfit was revealing, but I am use to going to yoga where (some) of the woman do dress like complete sluts and there is no dress code. (I love going to yoga lol). Again it is in the gyms right to have a dress code, and she would have signed the documents saying she knew and accepted their terms. In my opinion that outfit should have been acceptable.
I don't find that a good reason to kick somebody from a gym, sport clothes are usually revealing. Or at least they are if what that girl is wearing is considered revealing (I don't think so).
However what is revealing or not is cultural. We should know who's running the gym and their cultural background to understand better. In the end I don't find it reasonable from my culture but the business has the right to set their own rules, and the girl and other clients have the right to stop giving them money if they feel uncomfortable with those rules.

Whenever I hear a story like this and it sounds absolutely ridiculous, I think "It's possible that an owner acted on an absurd manner but it is more likely that there are other details which are not being reported." SO. . . what's the rest of the story?
1) Don't drag sexism into this - it says distracts GYM GOERS, not men. In fact, it is discriminating against men too. You'll understand the distinction in a minute.
2) There is actually an entire gym chain in the US operating under these same principles by the name of Planet Fitness. PF "gyms" have what is called a "lunk alarm" - basically, the idea is that if you annoy others by dressing in a way that makes other gym goers feel shit about their disgusting body, or slam weights, or make noise during lifts, you get kickes out without a refund. The problem is that the point is not to help those that feel shit about their body - it is to cash in on people l's subscriptions who don't actually go there BECAUSE they arr lazy pieces of shit, because surprise - the gym equipment wears down from use. So if you lift, or look even remotely like you lift, you get kicked out. Jujimufu and Brian Shaw did a grear video about it - took them about 20 minutes to get kicked out for no reason.
This is not sexism, this is far worse - this is pandering to useless, unmotivated people, and feeding into their mediocrity, and in exchange draining their wallets.
Regardless, I don't think she shoukd have been kicked out. I think gyms should allow anything short of underwear, as long as you don't intentionally annoy people or endanger them. She should have put on something else or have been provided a t-shirt by the gym. I feel that when she joined the gym she would have been or should have been made aware of a dress code, for instance a gym I swim at has a strict bathing suit policy that only allows basic modest bathing suits with no bikinis or anything to revealing. The policy includes men not wearing tanks. And women crops/ sports bras. The gym has the right to make those policies. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to have a membership there. Nothing is being forced on them, it's their choice, and the gyms right.
Well, that is also true to a certain extent. But, sometimes rules like this that sound fair and neutral are actually based in very outdated and incorrect ideas that are still onerously oppressive to a marginalized group, and then people need to start shouting from the high heavens that the practice represents something uncontrollable that was dressed up to seem more neutral and fair than they actually are.

Seems responsible. My gym has a similar policy that was part of the gym agreement I signed up for when I joined. Men can't walk around topless either like in other gyms. You also have to wear proper foot wear, bring a towel and clean any wipe down any machine you use.

And I think the rule that girls can’t work out in sports bras and guys can’t wear tank tops is kinda really stupid. When people work out, they get really hot, and when they get really hot, they sweat. In other cases I would never advocate for wearing minimal clothing, but in a gym setting it’s appropriate.

When you get a subscription in a gym, they give you a contract. In the contract, they lay out the rules and the terms of agreement for you. Whether you decide to read them or not is your own problem.
Membership doesn't always mean the same thing. In Europe we have places where membership grants you discounts for certain offers, but doesn't actually give you free stuff, and you have to buy an additional monthly subscription. I can't know for sure. I know for a fact that there are two such gyms in my immediate vicinity.
This type of business always lets their customers know about their rules and regulations. The bottom line is, she should have followed them. If she didn’t read them or didn’t follow them? Her problem. End of story.

If it's policy of the gym then yep, ask her to put on a sweater or leave.
If she wore what she is wearing in the pic then I agree, it was unjust to kick her out.

Rules are rules. If she doesn't like it, she should look for a gym with different rules. There is literally no need to start a whole pointless fuss about it. She is doing it for the attention.
I see some comments how men's distraction isn't a woman's problem and that they just shouldn't look, completely failing at realizing that we are not talking here about the same sex. Men have a different nature.
When I look at a girl, it is different than when I look at a baby or a tree.
It's very easy for anyone to say that we should look away , but for us looking away means fighting with ourselves. And this this fight itself is distracting.

We want to look at women as more than physical. As a human being. And these clothes act as a barrier. I constantly feel myself guilty looking at women. And when I keep trying to look away , resisting our desire to watch, it's irritating and that is what is called "distraction".
And a of these people are ignoring it, just like the children who dont understand anything about period masturbation or contraception.
I actually think it was targeted at her because someone that works there probably doesn't like her. They finally found her there and requested she be kicked out. It has nothing to do with what she is wearing. It's just a "I don't like you and you don't get to use this facility" type of thing. Petty, eh?
If it's against their policy, that's that. I don't agree with them, but rules are rules. If that young lady in the posted picture is wearing the same outfit, then they overreacted, "bigly".

Gyms can have their own rules regarding clothing. I can already think of people going: "But men can be shirtless", but you must understand that this gym does not think it's appropriate. Unless you've been in that specific gym and know that they only throw women out because of crop tops, don't claim it's misogyny.

Service based economy is run by the consumer, nothing else. If the business does socially unacceptable things, it destroys itself. Why do you think so many websites support LGBT (the movement, not the people), even though they might disagree with the movement itself. Because it's profitable. Let the businesses do it themselves.

Things like race, BODY TYPE, height, gender etc. are not allowed to be discriminated against when serving a customer under extreme circumstances. Weight can be a factor and you can refuse serving a fat person if you want to.
Last part is not true. Last year I was 16 and me, my mom, my uncle and my cousin went to a nusist beach. Me and my cousin aren't really fans of that, so we wear bathing shorts. The security continously kept bugging us and gave us a last warning at which point we hid from them everytime we saw them. They don't tolerate bathing suits.

According to me if you even acknowledge the presence of another person in the gym, you don't deserve to be there. If those people were distracted by her then they shouldn't be there. When I'm in the gym, I don't look at others, talk to others I don't even care that they are there. Just get in workout and get out.

Found her instagram. She wears bikinis and revealing clothes and posts them all over her instagram. I highly doubt this was the outfit she wore to the gym. It was something more revealing than this. She is lying to gain sympathy.
I'm pretty sure the amount of self-discipline required to go to the gym regularly far exceeds the amount required to not be distracted by "revelation."

@cavmanier Yes, but that poster doesn't say just men. Their example does, but they said "bodybuilder" which doesn't specify men or women. Anyway, the woman doesn't plan on returning, but it will probably cause less women to go there, so maybe that business can rethink some of their policies.

That's totally fine. Every business can have their very own dress codes. As long as it's applied to everyone in a fair manner, there's nothing to complain about.
It is clear gym policy men don't wear tank tops and women don't wear sports bras. So both men and women show less skin. If you don't like the policy don't go to the gym. There is nothing here to create a fuss over.

Rules are rules. And yes, Germans don't play when it comes to revealing outfit. Hence, why german women dress conservatively.
Its probably a sorts of inclusiveness policy towards people with immigrant background because they cannot stand women who are dressed in revealing clothes.
