+1 yI don't think of one thing in particular, but then I am an engineer. We do come in all flavors and a lot of different types. (Computer, Architectural, Industrial, Chemical, and Bio Ag to name a few you left out when it comes to degree types. Manufacturing, Quality, and Product Design when it comes to specific job.) There's no good way to classify us into on group, but it is generally true we have a big math and science background, but that doesn't mean we all use those two skills in our jobs. A lot of engineers are logical, but not always in the same way. Computer Engineers work in computer logic but a lot of mechanical engineers aren't big fans of programming. Some engineers are very practical, but some are very adventurous.
I've been told that engineers seem to all have a similar way of thinking such that we look at things in a similar manner.
I will admit we aren't the best spellers, but again that isn't a global trait. But I always like to make the claim that an engineer came up with the idea for spell check, but definitely didn't program it.
But really, we come in a way rage of variety. Some of use are introverts, some aren't. Some are your most standard nerd/geek, and some aren't. Others are very into sports and may even play them themselves while others don't really have any interest.
So maybe the best singular statement would be along the lines of, "A group covering a wide spectrum of people who like to work to design and improve the world that we live in."10 Reply

First thought: Their sense of humor tends to be... odd.
Second thought: I can't wait till I finish my degree and get to work in industry.
Engineers are some of the most creative people on the plant. They make things other people can't even imagine. Who is fool enough to call them boring?
Engineering is engineering. Discipline makes less of an impression than the type of project. Working on a com system for NASA vs. designing a new mold for bathroom trash cans will earn different amounts of respect.20 Reply

The second was a highly intelligent, very good-looking guy, who was married to one of the hottest women on the planet. They had one kid. I hadn't seen or heard from them in many years, but when a mutual friend stopped by to visit me here in Florida a few years back, he told me that our mutual friend the engineer had BECOME A WOMAN! So I guess engineers come in all flavors.

How do you come up with these stories, no seriously?

I suppose I'm like the boy who cried wolf, since 90% of my posts are contrived for my own (and hopefully a few others') amusement, who's gonna believe anything I say?. However, in the case of my two engineer friends, it's all on the table. Sometimes the truth really IS stranger than fiction. ; - )
I generally work with mechanical engineers, occasionally electrical and civil. They all think they are better than they are. All of their plans will require field engineering to make them work.
All in all I think it's a respectable profession, I think they should have some construction experience in order to be considered top notch.00 Reply
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yNothing comes to my mind when you say engineer! I don't fcking care about them! A major doesn't make a person more intelligent and clever than everyone else! It's stereotyping that all engineers are the smartest people ever, it's not necessarily true.. many other people who aren't engineers are also as smart and important! Doctors, for example, are way more important and intelligent and useful than engineers (of course that's my opinion)... Sorry, if any of what I said offended you Mr. MachineMan, I only spoke my mind :)

don't get your panties up in a bunch... lol you didn't really get the point of my question. I would say every degree says a little about a person, or at least tell you a bit of what he/might be into. I am not saying a doctor is more or less intelligent than an engineer I mean my Dad is a doctor :P I am not saying an artist is more or less important either. I would argue on the point that a doctor is more important than an engineer because every tool a doctor uses comes from an engineer, a hospit

al is built by a civil engineer. The electricity in your entire city is a product of engineer. So ye not trying to boast or sound conceited but think a bit before you just decide to insult a profession that is likely to be the most important in helping solve the millions of problem we as a race will soon face because of dwindling resources. The main reason I picked engineering was because I felt it contributes more than any other degree to improving society. If I just wanted to make money, would

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI think good at math. I once saw a shirt that said I'm an Enginere and engineer was spelled wrong a few times and was crossed out. Then the last line said I'm good at math. Now that's what I think of when I think of engineers.

lol so true ever since I started engineering have become worse and worse at spelling.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 ywhen I hear mechanical I think: basics, civil: widespread in field, and chemical: hardworking. I know it's random, but that's me :)

i think all engineers are hard working, and have a widespread knowledge base. Mechanical used to be closely related to automotive but now has spread more into the more general type of engineering because of the higher demand for it, my course for example combines electrical (mechantronics) and materials (which is heavily chemistry based). It also has business and law and statistics modules so you get a pretty round degree.
