It's really the intent that matters, this might be a controversial problem, since it could also apply to something like the Nazi flag, which I think is hard to justify, but I think respecting rebellion against the larger entity is fine, it's quite a different dynamic.

I've had a similar problem, I live in the Netherlands and I've got a Prinsenvlag which is the flag we flew on our ships in what I consider to be one of the best times in our history, but it's controversial because it's associated with slavery and colonialism.

Missouri was pivotal in the Civil War so I think there are less opinionated people here than in other areas. My half brother subscribes to the idea that Lincoln was assassinated by a cabal of international bankers because of policies unrelated to slavery and why it was never Lincoln's primary purpose for fighting. @Amur8711 In case you missed it most civilizations had slaves of some sort. Romans, Egyptians being noted. The Chinese, Italian, and Irish immigrants, though not slaves per se, were treated like ones. Even the Colonists were treated like owned commodities by the English. Chinese and prisoners of war were used as slaves by the Japanese in WWII and many were simply worked to death. This was done by the Germans too to various races. So it wasn't just the South, but even more recent violators.

So when I see the flag, I will see what my parents and grandparents endured.

Lived in the Deep South (Southern Georgia) for a decade. Moving to Tennessee when I retire. To most, including many black folks I knew too, it is a symbol of Southern Pride. Also to some, it's the symbol of the South rising again and it has. Especially with a very large amount of Fortune 500 companies located in the south.
