Now I normally stay away from politics because it gets really chaotic on here and it’s a giant shouting match between dogmatic people.
So to bring both sides of the political groups together on something I think we all can agree on, teaching our future generations to prepare them for adult life. I believe we aren’t truly teaching some important information that they will need for life.
So! What do you want the future generations to learn that might help their lives?
What is an important lesson that should be taught in school?
How to critically think and question authority figures and plan your own path in life instead of doing what you're told.
I know they'd never teach that, but it's a very valuable lesson schools should teach. I'm here in Korea, and most of my students "steal" their entire personalities, and even way of speaking, from Americans. Most Koreans are very orderly, do what they're told, only have three moods: shy, giddy, and pissed. But Korean kids are often just like Americans; opinionated and expressive.
However, some of them get that beaten out of them once they finish high school, and have to serve in the military (it's mandatory for all boys here), then go to college. I think becoming an adult in Korea drains you of your soul and liveliness, especially if you're male. Not to mention, Asia in general is a conformist country, where as most of the West that isn't ScanID Vania is very individualistic, so there's also that.
I like having friendly debates with my students. It helps them stand their ground and express who they are.
These days especially, I think it's vitally important to teach them that someone who disagrees with you isn't bad, or evil, or even necessarily wrong. Different people have different ideas, and that's okay. We seem to have lost the ability to get along with those from whom we differ somewhere along the line, and the consequences of that are scary at BEST.
Hundred percent agree with you, that’s something wholeheartedly want people especially young people to take in their minds and hopefully use it later in life
Basic and realistic economics. Allow teachers/students to say the reality of what they feel about brands and such, as long as there is a disclaimer up front that all of that is opinion. This is much more important than ever given credit to because schools treat their students like babies then thrust them out into the real world pretending they will be OK mainly cause they aren't their problem anymore when they actually are, bc when Tommy and Betty fuck at the high school grad party they blew their small savings on, guess who foots the bill for that child support, welfare, etc, Betty needs when Tommy bails on her? We ALL do! We pay for that single mother's dumb mistakes. And only more so when she insists she shops at Safeway than Walmart because Walmart is "not for her type" even though she is broke af and could benefit from it. Not to mention she gets that govt help our taxes go to for her degree in prostitution history studies. Considering all that, perhaps we really REALLY should get some basic econ classes pushed HARD in schools?
About teaching trade skills: I tried to teach my students basic automotive maintenance and how cars generally work and which tools are used for what.
The parents came at me with torches and pitchforks!
I have taught kids how to cook. The parents were more supportive of that (I don't know why), yet still some parents didn't like it.
When you teach at a private school, parents are *much* more focused on academics and sending their kids to college.
I've found teaching kids scientific method, which isn't quite the same as teaching science, generally helps with your third, fourth, and last bullet points. It's kind of a neat side effect.
I would say avoid politics and ideology of that regard in general because it just indoctrinates kids to the dogma of the one teaching it. Instead what should be done is that kids should be taught to pursue skills that reflect their academic strengths and given the chance to implement them in the workforce by doing job training on sites.
Critical thinking should be the big one. Collective and hivemind thinking seem to be more present and it overshadows one's own ability to step back and look at things differently and find solutions to the problems before them.
I think schools should teach wisdom such as “don’t take rejection personally,” “don’t give up,” “understand others may not have had the same advantages as you,” “don’t get into the car with strangers,” “not everybody is as happy as they appear on Facebook,” “everyone has problems, some just hide it better than others,” “money will not buy you happiness,” “you have to be careful about offending others cause some people are crazy and will harm you for stupid reasons,” etc… This is far more useful than math or grammar but it’s not taught.
That we are all different and it's what makes us who we are. We can either accept it or go cry alone at home but there is no reason to ever make fun of anyone or treat them different cause they don't look like you. It should be a lesson from the day our children are born and continue in school. We teach them to be hateful and no accept others and they take it to the outside world. Well, we can do better.
Honestly, kids shouldn't debate politics in school, neither should teachers bring politics at all.
But kids should debate in school about topics they just heard about and need to research and to defend positions they can't chose, all from the far past. The objective of school is instrumental knowledge, not politics or indoctrination.
That aside, I think kids should be able to form political groups at school and debate politics off school hours using the skill learned by debating pointless stuff in the school hours.
Many more cooking lessons, beyond just that one random Home Economics class. Kids should get constant classes on how to cook a variety of common dishes.
That’s a very important and basic thing that everyone should know in order to take care of themselves as adults. It also helps with health when people know how to prepare home-cooked meals instead of eating fast food or frozen dinners.
@MCheetah college is just as much of a joke as HS. The only thing needed in life in my opinion is elementary school to teach you how to read, write and basic math and then trade school to teach you a skillset.
Learned that slaves in USA were not all back. There was slaves of every race.
My 8 grade teacher told us that a lot of history books never told the full truth. He would tell us to find the truth and a place to start was the encyclopedia set and libaries.

One of my favorite books of all time, “Homage to Catalonia”, is about the Spanish Civil War, a prelude to WW2 and the Cold War.
The book is an ex post facto account of how, why, and where the conflict occurred, from the perspective of a soldier on the line. The reason why we should make children read it is that it explains in detail the problems with communist and socialist regimes fall in a very engaging manner.
How to be critical thinkers. Do not teach dogma of any sort. Expose your students to all points of view, leave the conclusions to the student, and be welcoming of diverse ideas and interpretations.

Time and money management.
Money management means stocks, credit, what's important, what kinda job do you take, is it worth it to take a job that job even though you know your student loans gonna be high.
Every action comes with consequences. (Good and bad) there will always be competition in life. what they put in is what they will get in life. Free - comes with a price.
I had one teacher in high school that spent an entire month to teach us about interviews, and how to be good at them and ensure you have the best chances at landing the job.
