I feel like conservatives have this toxic weird cringy idea that minorities sticking up for themselves at all is a "poltiical act" and "soft" and "whiny crazy sjw" and liberals think we should be bigger person or always get aggressive unncessarily or something i dont know when this sh*t gets politiicized it gets weird all we wanna do is be respected as minorities its not a political thing to me

i was always raised that its soft to not stick up for yourself, and it makesyoutough and strong to stick up for yourself and make sure people respect and you that you are not socially demeaned. that was always the "cool" thing for me.

I was just arguing this with my dad last night. People will always bicker about shit like taxes and all the other usual stuff in politics. But when it comes to minority groups pushing for more equality or just plain old better treatment in day-to-day life without getting prejudged to be this or that based on what you look like, I just don’t understand how someone could object to it. I think we got into because he’s only armed with his FoxNews talking points, he’s 90 years old and doesn’t get out much anymore, so scarily, he thinks 2022 America is what FoxNews paints it as, which is alarming because I’m out in the world everyday and I’m legitimately astounded by the ignorant and outright incorrect depictions of current events they try to tell us (please, nobody @ me with some “whataboutism” shit with CNN/MSNBC, they aren’t neutral either, but we’re not talking about them right now, FoxNews needs to just take its licks in a vacuum here, stay on the topic at hand🙄🤦‍♂️)

I’m not trying to sway his vote, the odds are he won’t even be alive for the 2024 elections, as sad as it makes me to say it. I just don’t want him living his final years in this state of unnecessary anxiety based off of lies and half-truths and mischaracterizations from a heavily biased and agenda’d news source. Anyway, I referenced Critical Race Theory, one of the conservative boogeymen du jour, just to be like “dude…. I know TONS of teachers. Some teach history/social studies. Not a single one of them knows what any of this shit we’re hearing is. OF COURSE FoxNews is going to find the small handful of examples they can claim is in that line of thought and highlight them to the point where their viewers will think it’s everywhere, and if their kid’s school doesn’t do it, they might be next. Don’t believe all this bullshit you get fed. Like how do you NOT see through this? I don’t even believe in politics and government, I’m just forcefully along for the ride, I have no agenda but universal decency and recognition of reality. But anyway, the point, after all that diatribe, was I brought up supposed “Critical Race Theory” to be like “Nobody normal (aka the vast, vast majority of people) is trying to “cancel” America. We’re trying to look at the WHOLE story, not just the shiny stuff. Why is that AT ALL a problem?” Why should that upset us to say “Hey, Thomas Jefferson, dude did some dope shit in his day. That deserves to be recognized. But we’d be gravely remiss to not point out that, as many of our founding fathers did, he was not evolved enough to not be a slave owner. And he sired children with slave women, who I’m going to venture a wild guess that they were not necessarily willing participants in the conception and probably multiple non-conceiving sexual encounters as well, which we would today call a “serial rapist.” I mean, we’d lose our shit if we heard German schools were teaching their kids about Hitler and The Third Reich, but conveniently leaving out that whole Holocaust thing. So maybe we should tamp down or at least compartmentalize our respect for these guys, and maybe not worship every single word they left for us and realize that humans can do great things and still be in serious need of personal growth. I mean, the hope for every new generation should be to be a little bit better than the last one, right?

I mean…look, it’s hard to acknowledge fuck-ups, especially personal ones or at least someone else’s that hits home for you. I get all that. We all make mistakes, we all say or do or think the wrong things sometimes. Happens to the best of us. But we should always be trying to be a little better than yesterday.

So I think the thing that saddens me about America is that there’s this overall attitude from white people —of all political parties— where we get this defensive, “this is a WHITE country, and others can live here, but nothing is going down without it getting ‘the white blessing’” mentality. I remember maybe 10-12 years ago the NFL started this effort to clean up the league’s image, and they wanted to maybe fine guys with long hair (**cough, cough* black guys with dreads) that blocked the nameplate on the back of their jersey, or giving penalties out for abusive/vulgar language on the field. So, the topic of what language was out of bounds, and of course our old frenemy The N-Word entered the discussion. They were talking about it on TV, and this guy Michael Wilbon, a black man, had the BEST phrasing of what I’m talking about. So they’re talking about “is it appropriate for some old white guy referee to tell a black player he can’t say the N-word to another black dude on the field, in any context?” Very fair point. I wouldn’t want to be that white ref, honestly, haha, that’d be awkward as hell😂

But Wilbon’s cohost was, not supporting, but just telling the other side of the opinion for those who held it, and Wilbon just cut him off and said “I am SICK of white people trying to frame the discussion.” I thought that was so well-said. Like everybody these days gets to speak their mind, but that uncomfortable aura we still sense is white people being like “ehhh…do we buy this? Are we gonna pass this or veto it? Because ultimately it’s up to us.” It’s only a problem if white people agree it’s a problem. If not, “STFU, stop crying, we all have problems.” And THAT’S what just bums me out about this country, and more specifically, our citizens.

Original question owner here. Joe you need to respect other people and meon myquestion. Sometimes I get disrespected for being a woman and for being black. My own races men, often put me down for my darkskin. I've been harrassed verbally and sexually by police officers who pulled me over for no reason and said "people like you" and girls like you" when there was noprobable reason to bug me. White men tell me im crazy and such when I just calmly explain that they were disrespecting me and I want to be treated better. I get gaslighted by a lot of people. I dont have a victim mindset. I just believe in sticking up for myself, its what self respecting women do. But you conservativeshate that dont you? Despite talkingabout how women shold be traditoinal and selfrespectful yeah right yougoons make no sense
