In the present war between Russia and Ukraine, who will ultimately win?

I think it will be Russia. The Russians are amazingly tough people, who, during WW II, managed to stop the German advance in its tracks, which was no small feat. Heinz Guderian, a German general and commander of tanks, famously said,

"We have severely underestimated the Russians, the extent of the country, and the treachery of the climate. This is the revenge of reality.”

The Russians will defeat the Ukraine, it has however raised some questions over just how well the Russians operate.

Not having air superiority, vehicles running out of fuel, an apparent lack of interoperability between forces and allowing the Ukrainians fairly free range of movement to move forces.

Also unless Putin actually is planning on war on Europe then he has done the one thing that should have been avoided, Germany waking up and increasing defence spending and looking towards its forces.

Closure of all of Europe to aircraft, that means no cargo flights etc.

I wish I could disagree with you there, but I think you're right. Who really knows whether the invasion is really going as rough for Russia as the reporting claims. And the Russians know they would look really bad if they took some losses and pulled out. So my guess is the hardheaded fuckers are now stuck there until they either subjugate the place, or everybody gets so tired of the situation that they construct a way of getting Russia out while saving face.

It's not good. The best answer, by far, was to make the invasion look like a really bad idea BEFORE it started.

The war was decided on day one. Russia cannot win. Even if they captured Ukraine they would need to occupy the area. If you think the US had a hard time in the middle east. Think again. Most people were not hostile to the US. The German occupation if France was about as bad for Germany as the Middle East for the US. If you want a better comparison look to the German occupation of Greece. Ukraine isn't Isis, not the IRA, nor the French Resistance. They are not a minority of extremists and saboteurs. They are an entire population... 44 million who will actively defy, deter, and destroy their invaders and occupiers.

The only thing Russia is amazing at is being incompetent.
They have already employed two thirds of their army, launched a full scale offensive against Kyiv and they are yet to take it against a much weaker nation.

No supply lines, no fuel, no ammo, tanks stuck in mud, teenage soldiers who haven't got a clue wtf they are doing, can't tell who the enemy is because "everyone looks the same".

Ukraine still stands solely because the whole invasion is a total shitshow.
The only thing they have shown is that Russia would crumble in a real confrontation with NATO.
That's why the unhinged wacko Putin is waving nukes around, because the operation has so far been an utter disgrace for Russia.

It's a battle of attrition at this point. Russia has numbers and have cut off escape routes by encircling Kyiv and seized important terrain areas to allow supply from most sides. They need to go for infrastructure and supply lines next if they want to win within the next week. Ukraine is holding and delaying it for now, but it is a matter of time before they are overrun or forced to surrender due to casualties and lack of supply.

The rest of the world is scared of Russia and as much as they could potentially take over Europe, it seems like that's not what the Russian people really want to do.

So I have a feeling that someone is going to step in and help the Ukrainians. Russia itself might even handle Putin. If all that were to happen, I could a world where the Ukraine comes out of this really well.

If were talking about firepower here Russia has more of it, so I think ultimately Russia is taking Ukraine down to the dust, you shouldn't underestimate the Russians they can be a pretty powerful force.
