Should violence against women be a hate crime?

Hate crime is so strong. You have to look at each case to see if it is bare or not. There is obviously an issue and it’s tragic. However I guarantee that if you look at the cases it domestic disputes you will find that there was a build up to it. Not just a sudden change and the guy had tricked the girl into a relationship only to be secretly hating her the entire time. And look at rape. It’s a heinous act. But I cannot remotely see it being a hate crime either, look at what a hate crime is. It’s an act of opposition and oppression of or on a certain different people. So yes I can see in some and I can only see it being a handful of people that perpetuate this cruel act of it being “oh shit, this woman is xyz and she is a woman and I hate women so let me rape her.” As fucked up as it is rape isn’t a hate crime crime it’s usually a crime of opportunity and out of want. Would you consider it a hate crime if it were the opposite? If a women rapes a man is that a hate crime? We want equality for all. well if it’s a hate crime for one it’s a hate crime against all.
"Hate crime" is used when race/ethnicity/religion/nationality is involved. Usually the aggressor attacks the victim due to differences in appearance/culture, so the motives are usually racism/xenophobia. While violence against women is horrible, it is not a "hate crime", because it's not random. Most cases of violence against women, there's some level of proximity involved, i. e. domestic violence. In hate crimes, the attacker doesn't usually know the victim, and they do so out of hatred for that person's race or culture. It is definitely not the same thing. Proximity means you are surrounded by women everywhere, since they make 50% of society. However, you aren't exposed to different ethnicities of people, so it is much more likely that a hate crime occurs on a random person of an ethnic minority, rather than a misogynist attacking a random woman in the streets because he hates all women.
Why do we need to add another label to something that should already be a crime? The use of "Hate crime" just fuels hatred and anger and promotes inequality because it zeroes in on people's differences. Hate crimes lead people to use a person's physical characteristics to explain why an act was done. That leads to prejudices and more stereotyping. I identify as myself first before I identify as a woman. This country encourages individualism, so make sense I feel this way. I think we could do with a lot less grouping people into categories based on attributes that don't define who we are.
But then shouldn't violence to men by women also be a hate crime? Anyone can be a victim of violence/ crime regardless of gender, as anyone can be a perpetrator of violence regardless of gender... And people that resort to violence (unless in self-defence) should be punished equally, men shouldn't get charged with a harsher sentence just because they're men just as women shouldn't get away with violence just because they're women. (Again, unless it was in self-defence)

@OddBeMe truly violent men (both rapists and/or beaters) do NOT give a shit about any protest, law, etc. On top of that many wife beaters are being enabled by women who have a very low self esteem and secretly think they “deserve” they need to get beaten. They usually lie or downplay the violence their husbands enact. It’s a sad and twisted psychological f*cked up process. The worst part is these women pass up men who would never lay a hand on them in the dating process.
If anything this will be weaponized to damage innocent men even further. Without a doubt certain women trying to provoke men they don’t like into hitting them BACK so they can use this to ruin his life (as if law enforcement wasn’t biased already)? This double standard bullshit already goes on. It’s happened to me twice.
If you really want to make changes for women than why don’t you buy a one way ticket to the Middle East and fight for them out there. THAT is where feminism is needed.
By implying hate crime, you're still considering violence against women should have more jail/prison time just for the sake of being a woman and not because of the crime done on a person. It should be what is it. It's violence regardless of the victim's gender.
I see a lot of women not get arrested at all after being violent with men.
@Screamsgutter This depends on the cop and the law. While not a violent act, I had almost $10,000 worth of damage done to my Beemer by a female that "keyed" it. I had proof of who did it. EVEN after getting a protective order and getting her trespassed to the best of my knowledge never work cuffs. Yet, with nothing to back up her claim, I was arrested, placed in cuffs, and hauled off to a local jail by a vindictive female. Thankfully another female got me released. So I agree, generally, speaking women are handled differently!
I find the term hate crime to be irrelevant. Anyone who commits a violent crime needs to be punished regardless of sex, race, etc.
Only if DV/violence against men is also labeled a hate crime.
We don’t need labels. That keeps us divided. Let your own actions determine such.
As "CelineBV" said gender doe's not mattered. It's all the same, hate crime against another human being. were all human beings just cause one human is different a little in body shape, doe's not affect that were all hating each other for sick reasons.
It's a crime already. The whole concept of a "hate crime" is essentially a thought crime, and in practice is used for political persecution.
Violence is violence, and it shouldn't be more or less illegal because of who the people involved are. The law should be applied equally for everyone.
Depends on the motivation behind the violence. A hate crime is typically one involving violence, that is motivated by prejudice on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds.
If that is the motive behind the violent crime then by definition is a hate crime.
@grega239if the crime is motivated by prejudice on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds then it is a hate crime... you already have one.
No. Im concerned about women abusing this to have people arrested over bullshit.
Like think about it for a minute.
Misogyny being a hate crime... expressing negative emotions/opinions towards women would be made a crime.
Furthermore, things like murder and assault are already criminalized.
Why do we need "assault/murder of a female" categories and to carry heavier sentences?
This is special treatment.
@grega239 only if it qualifies as a hate crime. Being a misogynist, a misandrist, sexist or racist isn't illegal in the united states and if it were that would be unconstitutional. However hate crimes are illegal and should be prosecuted. You can be a piece of shit human being with out doing something illegal so if you are worried about it, don't break the law and don't move to Scotland
No, because hate crime is a bullshit Communist idea that is straight out of Orwell’s 1984.
Hate crime creates privileged groups and claims to be able to read a person’s mind.
Hate crime falls within Orwell’s ‘thought crime’.
The law should apply evenly to all people, regardless of who they are and what their motivations might have been.
I hate the term hate crime, cause to me all crime is done cause you hate someone, its not like it is love crime, I love you so I'm going to do this.
They should just increase penalties for all crime and do away with hate crime.
Only if violence against men is listed the same way, have a serious look a t the stats men are injured almost often as women by their spouses but they do not report it for fear of ridicule. But if you dig even deeper the most cases violence against women is in female/female relationships.
A "hate crime" is a type of crime committed on someone BECAUSE of that person's race/sex. It is explicit.
You can't just look at someone beating up another person who happens to be the opposite sex or a different skin color and assume the violence is motivated by misogyny/misandry/racism. Otherwise, you're begging to have things backfire.
A lot of married men that usually aren't abusive towards anyone more than likely just broke down and decided enough was enough, some women can be very annoying. Of course their are men who are actually complete assholes who do deserve to be punch in the face for it. Theirs always a reason/ cause for violence against someone, even more so for home/domestic. So in short I feel we should start learning about how to stop this from even happening
Labelling everything as far as I'm concerned is not what will fix rapists and abusers. Education at an early age, teaching young boys not to hit girls, unless in self defence of course is the way forward as far as I'm concerned!
A very interesting question. Women are not a numerical minority they are a protected class. In any case, any man who abuses a woman is a sub-vertabrate.
~JSmith
So called "hate crime" means nothing to me.
Saying crimes against women are hate crimes undermine them in my opinion.
They are just crimes, either light or violent crimes.
Women are a different gender that comprise of many different races, creeds and orientations. It is superfluous and doesn't make sense.
Also, the crime may not at all be motivated by hate.
No. Don't be silly.
Domestic abuse is very different from abuse on race, sexuality, religion etc.
Legally it's a very different matter, too.
Violence initiated against anyone is a crime. Because the victim is of different race or gender doesn’t make it any more vile. No need to add the label “hate crime.”
Depends on the motive
I can accept that. I suppose if a KKK member assaulted a black guy and there was determined to be no other motive that racial hatred I suppose that’s legit but I think it’s hard to prove.
My concern is ending up in a situation where every crime is labeled a hate crime when the victim is simply a different race or gender or sexual orientation than the attacker. Muggers don’t care what demographics you are, they only care you have money and possessions to take.
Only if it goes both ways, and psychological or other abuse against men would be treated the very same way
Violence against anyone (unless life or death and self-protection) should be a crime.
Depends on the contest of the violence, But again every crime that causes harm could be considered a hate crime
violence against anyone should be prosecuted harshly. no reason to.
Hate is a objective term and gets missed in sentences all the time. Just proceute for assault and battery. That enough for a decent sentence.
Personally I think all hate crime laws should be taken off the books.
But violence against men is not?
This is stupid.
That would never happen, its not racially motivated.

Hate crimes are stupid because it means committing a crime against people like you is less severe. All crimes against another person are bad.
I can't believe how much violence against women is trivialized in the society. Someone who beat up Rihanna is still popular while she gets insulted.
I don't ever recall anyone insulting her, but I am aware that it all began when it was discovered that allegedly he was having an affair and she was being physically violent while they were in the car. I'm not sure if there are any accounts that can prove if the car was parked or in motion. I'm sure the both of them were fighting/protecting themselves at that point. Although it was reported that he assaulted her, but did she really became violent first or did he attack her after something was said. It happened just one time, so it's fair to say there was a cause for that to take place. We don't know what really happened, only they do.
I believe the violence against women is so trivialized or called into question, because of the circumstances.
@CallmeTheKnight Um, violence against men is trivialized. Domestic violence against women is taken way more seriously than the other way around. It's one of mens' biggest complaints as far as double standards go.
Any violence should be a crime. Therefore not needing the hate crime title in the first place.
I believe that Yes, it should be and be criminally prosecuted accordingly. Absolutely No Man has a right to physically or emotionally abuse any girl Period.
Way to dismiss violence against your own gender. Then what you're saying is that women HAVE a right to physically or emotionally abuse any guy period.
Women want equality and special privileges at the same time. Hilarious!
I mean technically it should go both ways wether its violence from a boy to girl or violence from a girl to boy they should all be relationship harassment/be illegal.
There's stats the other way as well.
worldpopulationreview.com/.../domestic-violence-by-state
For the first time, six states report domestic violence being reported equally between men and women or reported more by men - Texas, North Dakota, Wyoming, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Louisiana.
A Hate Crime is jut a crime against somebody that democrats pander to.
Violence is a crime no matter who the hitter or the person getting hit is. Motives shouldn't try to curtain the crime.
I chose the middle one because with that logic violence towards anyone should be considered a hate crime.
Violence is already a crime. Violence against men happens every day across the US. Is that somehow less of a crime? Should women be protected more than men?
Don't be a moron.
No. If anything, making anything into a hate crime should be illegal. The action is the crime, not the thought. It's important that thoughts are not considered an aggravating factor.
Actually motive is important and is taken into account on many crimes such the difference between murder and manslaughter and the varying degrees.
@Subarugirl As long as there's hate crime against men. You can't have one and not the other.
@Subarugirl That's intent. That's not the same thing. Intent can be the difference between negligence and intentional harm. It can be the difference between a crime and non-crime. The naughty thoughts (motives) used under the guise of "hate crime" are not intent. For example, it separates murders into hate crimes and non-hate crimes, but the intent to murder remains consistent while the motive varies. Those hate crime factors are separate to the intent to commit murder. It's *that* intent which is criminal and which you charge people on. The use of the separate factors which go into so called "hate crime" are what I'm saying should be illegal in the formulation of law and policy.
@Screamsgutter …. There is..:
Hate crime should be done away with as a thing. Crime is crime.
I think society downplays how terrible domestic violence and rape is, so yeah.
Y'know, domestic violence happens in same-sex marriages as well. Rape also happens to both men and women. It's about the individual, not an entire group.
@Screamsgutter Of course. Domestic violence and rape shouldn’t be downplayed in any cases.
Nothing should be a hate crime. A crime is a crime. Trying to assign racist motivations to crimes just gets in the way of actually getting to the facts of the matter.
The "hate crime" stuff is BS. If someone attacks someone WTF is the difference what excuse they use.
There's NO such thing as a "hate crime".
Crimes are not based on emotion.
They are based on FACTS and rational thinking.
And they should be punished according to how harshly the Bible condemns them
We already have laws for violence.
Hating someone isn't a crime. You can't criminalize emotions
Only if violence against men does as well.
Simples...
It was very generous of your wife’s boyfriend to give you computer time today.
Only if they do the same for men and then it is effectively pointless isn't it?
It should be labelled as the violence it is. Any harm you do towards a person or persons is violence.
What if they just choose to identify as a woman before the cops show up? That seems to work in sports these days.
Violence against women (and men) is already a crime. Are you saying you believe women deserve more protection than men?
@Hu64dcbkk Well aren't you a pleasant person. Lol
Go take a Midol
As long as female violence against men is called a hate crime.
Which isn't going to happen.
Should violence against anyone be a hate crime? Not that it isn't already a crime.
yes if you lay a hand on any woman you should be punished.
In order for it to be a hate crime it has to be because they're women.
Is that a statement or a question?
@Screamsgutter statement. In rife for a hate crime bv to exist, it hff as yo be because of race, religion, sexual orientation, wealth, gender, etc. You have to hate the group and that hatred being the reason for your actions. Domestic abuse is generally personal, hating a person (if that's the reason for abuse) doesn't rise to the level of a hate crime.
Not if she hit me first! Really tho, domestic violence doesn't need to reclassified.
If it is hate crimes against men should also be criminalized
No.
If someone assaults another, just charge them with assault.
All violent crime is a hate crime.
So it's already a crime.
so basically anything a white male does that anyone doesn't like will be considered a hate crime?
every violent act is "Hateful" adding the word "Hate" doesn't change anything
Violence of any kind should be considered as hate...
