I never would ask for a pardon.
If I'm certain of the rightfulness of my actions - I'd ask for a death sentenze, by shooting, like a soldier.
If on the contrary I see that my actions were in error, I'd ask to be hanged, like a criminal.

Because the people will think you're guilty. Often the people really are guilty, there are only a few exceptions.
