Author's Opinion: 🦍 "For myself, I agree with the above statement. Even if the animals are not being physically abused, being caged so people can watch them for money seems completely cruel and barbaric. I feel the same way about SeaWorld and other aquariums. ⛓️ The difference is, SeaWorld is notoriously known for physically abusing their animals to get them to perform." 🐬 Please Explain Your Answer... 💭

I entirely agree. There are compromises between free range zoos and confining zoos. Lion Country Safari in Florida is breeding and preserving White Rhinos for the wild. I drove by 3 huge ones and (!) they did not have leg chains. Tame as cows. It's why they are endangered. Poached for their horns.

Rightly or wrongly, if it weren’t for zoos offering their services to the public, some extremely rare species that are only alive in zoos would be extinct. Other species would be significantly endangered. I’m not saying it’s the best option I’m just saying it’s the option we have.

It’s not really that simple unless you’re using “cage” strictly. Putting wild animals in cages is cruel. However, there are zoos that create habitats for their animals. Roomy and designed to mimic the natural habitats of the animals. This use is valuable for endangered species. Some zoos also use proceeds to protect wildlife and its natural habitats. They help educate visitors about the dangers animals face in a world that we took by force and largely destroyed as a result. They offer people the opportunity to contribute to efforts to change things for the better. Frankly, circuses are a far worse environment in every conceivable way. They should be banned and the animals moved to sanctuaries or protective exhibits. The moral of the story is “know your zoo”, and only contribute to the ethical ones.

Yes, if it's only for human entertainment. But providing a safe environment for an endangered species while giving a source of knowledge for children can be beneficial for both.

Of course an animal sanctuary would be better than a zoo, but as long as poachers can be a threat to them, I'm okay with having a few of them in a spacious and varied zoo enclosure. Any zoos with performances and mandated human interactions can fuck right off.

I agree and disagree. I feel bad seeing those amazing creatures confined, and would like to see them have more space. But I also see that through the efforts of some zoos some species have been brought back from the brink of extinction.. that work costs money 🤷‍♂️

Viewing animals at the zoo is honestly a byproduct used to raise funds for taking care of animals being rehabilitated from illegal poaching & Trafficking, healed, and protected from extinction. But sad part is some only see zoos as a money making buisness, and that is why you sometimes see zoos with mistreated & neglected animals, which is what most people rave about when it comes to zoos.

The only reason to have an animal in a controlled environment like a zoo is if the animal is an endangered species and the zoo is trying to propagate the species.

Last time I was at a zoo, I was bummed out to see a huge polar bear in his pen. The bear was pacing back and forth like he was going stir crazy.

It depends. The polar bear at my zoo probably would have died if it wasn't transferred there because a hunter accidentally (he didn't know he killed a mother bear) killed its mother when it was just little. To save its life he went out to find it, tranquilized it and gave it to a zoo.

Yeah it is fucked up. They may not be hit or starved but they are taken from their homes and natural environment where they are comfortable all for little fat kids eating a hotdog to rub their dirty noses on the glass of the animals enclosure.

I tend to agree, but zoos also contribute highly to preservation efforts and often times animals live a much gentler fate in a zoo than in the wild.

An enclosure is not a cage. A cage certainly is cruel. If the enclosure is bug enough, and they are treated respectfully I think its tolerable - especially if they would not survive in wild due to endangerment, habitat loss and poaching.

I agree. They are not in their natural habitat.
The only exception would be when we are trying to save an endangered species and it is necessary to breed them in captivity initially before releasing them in their natural habitat.
