What do you think could be a reason why I truly believed growing up anybody who I thought was ugly looking must also have an ugly personality?

As a young child and through my teen years as well I really did believe and honestly thought anybody who I thought was ugly looking must also have a bad and ugly personality as well and it would be good for me if I didn’t try to be friends with them and stay away from them.

Probably because that's how media shows such people to be. In reality, people who have suffered in some dimension are often very warm and kind, as they can see the pain of others reflected in their own experiences.

I try to give everyone a chance to at least be a friend.

I could see a kid making assumptions like that out of disgust for the perceived ugliness

Disney films are a good example, all ugly is bad and all beautiful is good, it leaves an impression on kids minds. So technically it wasn't your fault as you grew up watching these films and in your little impressionable mind that was true.
