I eat meat too, but I believe in humanely killing animals painlessly. I do not believe slitting the throat of an animal and watching it bleed to death for several seconds up to a minute is okay.

I cannot post the videos here, but just look at YouTube for "Muslim Animal Cruelty" and you can see how horribly Muslims slaughter an animal as part of their religion. It's horrible and should be illegal.

Difficult question.

I'm Christian. The Bible clearly states in the New Testament that I shouldn't eat food sacrificed to false gods/idols depending on the translation.

My issue with halal food is that it requires an imam to pray over it during the slaughter.

If done correctly, the blade used to cut the throat is sharpened to such an edge that there is no pain - more like a razor's cut. The animal bleeds out painlessly. Essentially the blood pressure falls and the animal slips away quietly.

The real problem is the videos posted are never taken at the smaller farm-based slaughterhouses. The animals have invariably been shipped to a commercial slaughterhouse and the sheer size of the operation means the animals have experienced distress during the transportation and then killed in an assembly-line fashion. The blades are cleaned between animals, but not sharpened. Take a medical scalpel and cut into rawhide. It slices the first one easily, but by number five it takes significant pressure to make the same cut.

I have a good friend who is a sheep farmer. His meat is very expensive because of the costs for a licensed slaughterhouse on his farm - the norm when his parents built the farm in the 1960s, but the exception now because animal rights fuckwits since the late 1970s have managed to force so many legislated license points a slaughterhouse must meet that the smaller, more humane farms closed the butchery sheds because of the cost of renewing the license every year was ludicrous.

My friend and his family kept theirs open so they could ensure the slaughterhouse was humanely run. They don't do halal, but they are kosher, which is a similar process in that the animals are bled out.

Unlike a commercial slaughterhouse, you can't tell when they are taking the animals for processing. There's no "screaming" calves, lambs or chickens. The farmers who have raised the livestock are the ones holding the blade. They care about the animals so they dispatch them quickly and painlessly with blades sharper than a razor.

Yes, it's slower than a bullet. But where did you think the chops and steaks in the styrofoam came from?

Yes all humane kill methods are excluded if the meat is to remain Halal such as decapitation and any blow to the head as a cause of death. The Australian animal welfare organization RSPCA outlines reversible and irreversible stunning kill methods in their literature, irreversible stunning is smashing the brain killing the animal instantly (most western abattoirs apply this method). reversible means not killed just stunned in the hope that the animal's suffering will be reduced when the muslims kill it through slitting it's throat. Someone that slaughters their own animals said the if the animal freaks out during the kill it makes the meat tuff too.

In many sheep and lambs this is by electronic stunning to the head or in poultry via a water bath electrified with enough power to make them unconscious but not to kill. Another method of stunning that involves cardiac arrest is not allowed under halal rules.

In non-halal slaughterhouses, stunned animals are shackled and hoisted above the ground where a slaughterman "sticks" them, cutting their throat or inserting a chest stick close to the heart. Cattle and some sheep and pigs are stunned by a bolt through the brain before being killed.

Many poultry are now killed using gas. But they have traditionally been shackled, hung upside down on a production line, moved through electrified water to stun them, then conveyed to a mechanical neck cutter. In halal, however, they are killed by hand.

Actually most halal meat is stunned, it's the accompanying prayer that's more important. The truth is a lot of the meat you eat, whether you're Muslim of not is likely to be halal. Muslims are by far the biggest customers of the uk sheep and if you ban halal you'd devastate the farming industry. Slaughter of animals is closely monitored by a vet and has to meet the animal welfare regulations of that country, not the religious ones.
The reality is most people who want to ban it do so out of Islamphobia and racism rather than animal welfare concerns.

I think if you open up Halal to animal cruelty investigation, factory farming should be right there with it to be scrutinized. Like would I rather a cow live in a factory farm warehouse, basically blind from lack of sun, covered in sores from rubbing up against eachother, to be shuffled in a line to be Humanely Killed with a Pressure Pistol.

That's a pretty hefty accusation, saying the real point of halal slaughter procedures is to torture animals. I don't believe that. It's pretty clear that it's a required practice, so your reasoning is not accurate.

Halal and Kosher are the same thing - slaughter by exsanguination. It's not "cruelty" - quite the opposite. The animal must be cared for prior to slaughter and death must be quick and painless.

Only the far right and bigots like you hide behind laws and should be made illegal. But then you'd just be run if the mill terrorists again.

isn't that how chickens are killed? Farm fresh free range chickens are plucked from their flock, turned upside down and slipped into an inverted cone so their head sticks out. And the farmer cut its throst.

I think it should be. I also think that the method of slaughter was the most humane available at the time it was defined, and more humane methods should take their place (although I see religious people would disagree).

It should be noticed that a vegan diet is automatically halal.

How about atheist, Chinese and Jews treating the animals for consumption? They are all allowed?
