For 99% of people, the problem isn't that a black gay woman was released, the problem is that a Russian arm's dealer know as the merchant of death was released in exchange for her release. Frankly Biden and Harris are hypocrites, they put so much effort into releasing one drug offender, when they could have spent the same effort freeing thousands of drug offenders at home that they them selves are responsible for being in prison.

+1 yThe issue here is that we’re trying to rescue an American citizen from a foreign prison. How they landed themselves there isn’t super-important to me. I’m not really in favor of prison, conceptually, anyway, so I don’t want Viktor in our prisons either, that’s simply a humanity issue for me. I don’t buy into the concept of criminality as a general rule, laws are mostly very arbitrarily arrived at and even more arbitrarily enforced, and I simply don’t believe freedom to be on the table for revocation for any living being, under almost any circumstance.
With that said, under the reality that there IS prison, right or wrong…I’ve just never seen Griner spoken well of by many people, from the JUMP, before we could even start trying to make comparisons of her vs Bout or any other foreign prisoner of America. There was just no sympathy, it was “what an idiot, she deserves whatever happens to her.” I’m just saying that different figures could’ve had the same thing happen to them, and if it wasn’t a 6’10 black lesbian who white American dudes don’t want to fuck, it might be different. There are levels to it, and I notice conservatives (liberals too, but they aren’t relevant to this particular discussion) have these tiers of acceptability. It really does seem like many of them idealize the straight white conservative man. But they’ll take a straight white conservative woman too. Or after that a straight non-white man or woman, often made a show of, like “see? We aren’t racists!”, which is really just as racist as being outright racist, lmao. They’ll accept a gay person as long as they’re REALLY conservative, see: Milo Yiannopolis, although I guess that got him enough guff that he know claims himself as “ex-gay”…. just lmao.
On the flip side, if you say liberal things, there are tiers to how hard they’ll hate on you. Honestly, I hate to sound condescending, but I almost feel like YOU GUYS don’t realize you’re doing it, sometimes, anyway. If you’re a straight white liberal guy, they’ll just call you a pussy and try to bully you by challenging your manhood and suggesting that it’s “soft” to be liberal. The white women are “typical idiot liberal women who don’t understand how the world works”, yadda yadda, and a lot of that seems to be tied to dating frustrations, as many women these days want nothing to do with ultra-conservative men. All the “swipe left if you voted for Trump” on Tinder and such. But in your heart of hearts, you still want them based on their looks, the attractive ones, anyway, and it turns into this painfully obvious “I’m rejecting you before you reject me, so I win” thing. If you’re a 6’10 WNBA center who prefers the company of women, you’re totally out and don’t have a leg to stand on with these people. Unless you’re a super-patriot, then you’d become a token. But if you aren’t the biggest of patriots, you’re fucked with these people. And that’s one thing I’ll never understand, this idea that you MUST be unwaveringly patriotic and uncritical of America, it’s government, and it’s society in order to be accepted as a citizen. That’s LUDICROUS. That’s quite literally what the First Amendment is for, the ability to say whatever you feel like about the government. Any other speech is not truly “free” and can come with repercussions from one angle or another, individual consequences, societal ostracization, that’s all fair, but we’re supposed to be able to talk shit about the government without the government stopping us. So to disagree with Griner’s feelings is fine, but you’re out of line suggesting that she doesn’t deserve her country’s help. I’m going to say this REAL slowly so you guys can understand: It’s completely ok to not like or love where you live, or aspects about it, and to be vocal about it. It does not make you any less of a citizen.
I’m not a Democrat, but I suppose I prefer them to Republicans, generally speaking, more so in opposition to conservative values than in support of liberal ones. I don’t subscribe to “left vs right” bullshit, but in others’ estimations, I’d wager they might say even democrats are a little too much to the right for my liking, so it’s not like I think they do enough. They really just serve to stifle Republican interests, which are what I REALLY don’t want to live under, that’s my nightmare. So I don’t have a favorite team, just one that I more dislike and root against. But it’s not lost on me that the people complaining about this are only the ones who have been on a mission to universally trash Biden’s every move, the ones who frame every positive, negative, or neutral event in such a way as to make it look like a failure by Biden or the Democrats. I don’t know if you think the rest of us are stupid and can’t see that, or what.

Viktor Bout, “The Merchant of Death”…. ooooohhhhh, scary👻😱😂 I guarantee most, or even NONE, of you even knew who this guy was before Griner was involved. I also promise you the sale of weapons never stopped or slowed due to Bout’s arrest. There’s always a “next man up”, so nobody cleaned up the streets by taking him off them. Not for nothing, I know who AMERICA tells me Viktor about is, and common sense should tell you they’re going to of course paint him in the worst imaginable light when they tell our people about them. I’m not saying we’re like Russia or China here, but if you think we get anywhere near the truth from the US government, under any party’s rule, then I have an AMAZING deal I’d like to talk to you about: two bridges, one in Brooklyn, one in the San Francisco Bay, and if you buy one I’ll give you the other one at half price.

Also, when the Whelan guy was a potential bargaining chip when this all first happened, I didn’t hear a peep about him, it was just this immediate “fuck Britney Griner, let her rot in the gulag.” REALLY? This is a human being, from your own country. I wish we got both of them out, but Russia wanted 1-for-1, I guess. I don’t know if you noticed, but Russo-American relations are not currently at their peak right now, so I’m sure it wasn’t a friendly negotiation. Also, for all we know, maybe Whelan really WAS spying, in which case Russia wouldn’t be too keen to let him go. Britney Griner is just going to go back to dunkin’ on broads in the W, she’s harmless. Take off your American pants and think about it from a Russian perspective. America is not a good guy, they don’t make Russia’s pursuits any easier, and, it’s easy to lose sight of this, but Russia has every right to pursue their interests just like we do. That doesn’t mean it’s always correct, aka Ukraine invasion, but within their own boundaries, why wouldn’t they be angling for what’s best for them? Why is “USA #1!” ok, but “Russia #1!” isn’t? Only Americans perceive the world and America as we do. We’re just some other country to everyone else, they don’t give a fuck about us, and they shouldn’t, because we don’t give a fuck about them, unless there’s a dollar to be made, then we dream up a story to justify doing dirt so we look like the hero to our own people. Like is this your first day on Earth? That’s how it’s always been. So I’m just saying, Viktor Bout is sold to us as a monster, but we only think that because we’re told to. Russia probably thinks we’re monstrous for giving weapons to Ukraine, because in Russia’s eyes, Ukraine is rightfully theirs. You and I and the Ukrainians may disagree, but regardless, three sides to every story: yours, theirs, and the truth.

Also, an update: just as one of many examples, I’ve seen someone here today call Griner something to the effect of “that ball juggling black lesbo-bitch”, and again, that’s just one of probably hundreds of comments like that that I’ve read in the last day, so….. if the shoe fits….
- +1 y
People mostly dislike her because she said she "hated America" and now she is looking for them to bail her out. She broke the law in Russia and got herself in that mess.. Biden bailing her out for an underground criminal is what's most important and a dirty tactic.. And is vilifying anyone who disagrees with it..
- +1 y
@JDavid25 well…. I’m not sure I believe that for everyone. Maybe that’s your take from your shoes, and that’s cool. But, bro, let me tell you…as a white dude, who has other white people speak freely to him with apparently no fear of rebuke…. people say racist shit to me every. Single. Day. And they just kind of give me the “YOU know what I’m talking about….😉” vibe (if not literally saying it), like they just expect I’m going to be receptive to this, it’s that commonplace. And these are strangers, or very loose acquaintances, it’s not even someone close thinking they’re making a statement in confidence. I don’t know, that says to me that there’s a PROBLEM.
So I say all that to say that obviously a lot of folks will dress it up as something seemingly more acceptable. “She doesn’t love America enough!”🙄 If loving a country and a government is an absolute requirement, then fire me right into space, because I don’t want any parts of any of this bullshit, in ANY country, lmao, this isn’t specific to America.
If you don’t like trade, that’s your assessment to make. But I’m curious what you think is dirty about it. Also, Whelan has some dirt in his past, but I feel like we’re still soldier-sucking a bit here. I don’t want either of them there, but if you can only get one, take whichever one they’re giving. No human life is worth more than another, everyone’s life is equally valuable. Not for nothing, if Viktor Bout sold the US weapons to fight against China or North Korea or Iran, he wouldn’t be in prison right now. Is selling weapons only bad if it’s to a country you consider an enemy? We gotta get away from this team vs team mentality, holy fuck. Ready to fucking off myself, I can’t handle the bullshit the world is on. Fucking mindless. - +1 y
Bro every group says racist shit about every other group.. The amount of racist stuff I hear "Black" people say is astonishing.. Not to mention the stuff I've heard Latinos say too.. I mean I hear "Black" people openly call "White" people "White" Devils and they say nothing.. Oneguy told me that "he would kill a "White" muthaf**ker".. Sure some people do say some "racist" stuff (whatever that means anymore) but gist is that she got herself into the mess and hates America.. She broke their laws and expects the American government to bail her out... If you break laws you should expect the consequences to be put upon you.. I'mma be honest I know nothing about the underground criminal, so while I think it was dirty, I can't say I care too much for him being released.. But, the whole trades speaks of corruption. There was a certain reason they traded that man for Griner.. I believe people should be in prison, because we need a place to keep evil people.. Rehabilitation only works so much and they shouldn't be out on the street.. It was all just a political statement..
- +1 y
@JDavid25 For sure, man, there’s racism or prejudice or whatever you care to call it in any group, and it’s all ultimately ugly. I’d maybe argue that it’s more impactful when it’s “white-on-POC”, like I couldn’t get my feelings hurt on a racial level no matter how hard anyone tried, because my life in this country is a goddamn breeze, in some, if not LARGE, part because of what I look like, and what the people who came before me look like.
Anyway, I leaned more into the race thing and forgot the gay part, haha, but that’s a big factor too. I’m going to post a video I saw today that I wish I had seen earlier, and I could’ve saved myself a ton of typing, lmfao, because this dude pretty much nails exactly what I’m trying to say, minus my general views about the concept of imprisonment and all that. But he basically says she’s black, she’s gay, she’s a woman, and she’s a democrat…. all groups that many conservatives/Republicans seem to have tremendous disdain for, at least one of those four qualities will strike a nerve with someone.

Of course.. There surely is.. Unfortunately humans are tribal which is a good thing but can be a very bad one too.. But I think the most racism I have encountered was from people assuming I need help because I'm not capable enough.. Just having those low expectations of me.. That hurts more than any "N- word" or name call.. Other than that I have never really experienced overt racism.. And I believe I can have just as much as a breezy life as you if I make the right choices and work the right ways. In fact there's POCs with breezy lives also.. The amount of spoiled POCs I have ran into is crazy.. I also know the History of the Irish and the Jews here in America and it wasn't pretty in the beginning..
As for Brittney Griner I looked into the matter and I think there's a bit too much focus on her.. I was wrong, it's good that she's back and Russia definitely used her.. But so did the Biden Administration.. She was a bargaining chip because Russia wanted that terrorist back.. The main problem is not that Griner is back, but that he is out.. That's what conservatives are on about.. The Democrats are making it seem as if Conservatives/Republicans don't want Griner back, when really the whole deal was dirty.. "The Lord of War" is a very dangerous man.. He sold weapons aiding a Civil War in Africa.. And conspired to kill Americans etc etc.. That was a dirty trade and Russia used Griner because they knew how much The Biden Administration wanted her back, and they didn't negotiate well.. It's honestly good that Griner is back.. The Sentence that Russia gave her was ridiculous.. But what the Biden Administration is doing is dirty.. - +1 y
As for Conservatives/Republicans disdainful Minorities, women and the LGBTQIA+, It's severely overblown.. As there are Non "White", women, and "LGBT" Conservatives/Republicans.. I used to be a Conservative, and I'm "Black", from the hood, with long locs and six earrings in ears..

First of all, this is not even a surprise. All countries do this regularly. Any cost is negligible in exchange for recovering one of your own citizens. This is not because they dont consider Viktor as dangerous (even if the whole nickname business is fucking childish as hell) but because respectable countries puts an incredible amount of value in their own citizens as a matter of course.
USA will move heaven and earth to recover one of their citizens so releasing a single prisoner is a cheap price to pay.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yThere’s no doubt, it was an uneven swap (although Victor Bout had less than 7 years left to serve of his 25 year sentence). An international arms dealer for a petty drug offender. Russia used Griner as a pawn, giving her an excessive sentence so she would be an attractive bargaining chip. They knew what they were doing all along. People on the right only wanted to see her rot because they don’t agree with her lifestyle or her political views and that’s wrong. What if it had been Ivanka Trump? No American citizen should be left to serve nine years in a Russian work camp over a stupid vial of cannabis oil. Getting her back was just the right thing to do. If they had given her a year or less (which is reasonable), I would have said let her serve the time. Now they need to get the other Americans being held over there on trumped up charges back as well. The outsized media attention on Griner’s case probably helped her cause at the expense of others still stuck over there. I would also say Americans traveling abroad need to be more careful and not put the U. S. government in this position in the first place.

"People on the right only wanted to see her rot because they don’t agree with her lifestyle or her political views and that’s wrong."
The people on the right don't think American should bail her out because she broke Russian laws and should serve the time.. They dowant her to rot and they don't necessarily care about her lifestyle.. Just that she had anti-American views and was biting the hand that fed her, so she shouldn't expect a rescue just because she is a celebrity..
Opinion Owner+1 y@JDavid25 Protesting your country does not make you “anti-American” at all….. and you just proved my point that your opposition is political.
Opinion Owner+1 y@JDavid25 When and where did she allegedly state this hatred of America?
Opinion Owner+1 y@JDavid25 The only thing she did was boycott the anthem in protest of police brutality against minorities, something that has persisted throughout this country’s history. Why should people be compelled to stand for an anthem in a blind show of patriotism when that country doesn’t always stand up for your people? It’s a legitimate question.

America is one of the most diverse and least racist countries in the world.. Most. other countries are Homogeneous and pretty closed off.. The Police brutality thing is severely overblown, but some does happen.. And it's definitely not something plaguing the "Black" Community or any Community.. It's just a performance really.. A disrespectful one.. Truth is the whole thing wasn't even about Brittney Griner herself.. It was about the terrorist.. It wasn't an even trade.. Russia used Griner as leverage just to get the terrorist back..
Opinion Owner+1 y@JDavid25 One of the least racist countries? You’ve got to be kidding. With that nonsense, this conversation is over.

You've gotta be kidding me if you think that America is a racist country.. I mean really.. You obviously don't know anything about other countries and how they work.. What countries that is mostly other "race" elected a "Black" President? What country has so many influential entertainers that are not it's main "race"? Why are so many people trying to migrate to America? Tell about nonsense again?
Anonymous(30-35)+1 y99% where? Lol because I’ve yet to see anyone relating this situation to race and homophobia. I’ve only seen comments Regarding Victor being the merchant of death and how Griner “hates America”. Not saying that there aren’t people with the POV you mentioned but I definitely wouldn’t say the majority, and I’ve seen plenty of comments on more than one platform without even looking for them.

Asker+1 yWhen I said 99% of people, I meant that 99% of the people who opposed Biden's trade deal, race and sexual preference had nothing to do with it. It's scary as hell seeing the amount of Biden supporters praising the release of the merchant of death.
Opinion Owner+1 yTo be very honest I genuinely haven’t seen anyone “praise” the release of Viktor. I mean realistically who’s happy about that aspect? I am glad to see Griner out, because the punishment seemed especially harsh after hearing the testimonies of women who’d served time where she was and recalled how horrific the treatment was. No one deserves that over a tiny bit of THC (not saying it was right that she took it over, she should’ve done research as it’s so important to know the rules when visiting another country or even state). However I believe the lot of us are unhappy and even worried to see whom she was trader for. I haven’t seen anyone touting the whole “if you aren’t happy Brittany’s coming home then you’re a racist homophobic” perspective though.

Biden and the Democrats know they have to give out a good reason that Americans accept why he gave a weapons dealer free. Now blaming all the people that rightly complain that he gave a dangerous guy freedom is a move to distract the attention away from what happened. It also shows what the deal really is: A propaganda attempt to his main voters showing them that no matter which minority you´re part of America is there for you and willing to pay the prize.
