Short answer - yes. As Montesquieu, a clear principle of democratic government is that someone somewhere must be trusted. This, of course, does not mean blind trust or unequivocal. Government must be held to account.
Still, absent that trust, government - especially democratic government - collapses. See also the populist sentiment sweeping the nation at the moment.
Once democratic institutions are found, in principle, to be suspect, those institutions fall into disrepute. What follows is the denigrating of those institutions and in extremis the rule of law.
This then to be replaced by the trendy fads of the hour. See also, for example, "wokeism" and in a different way, "Trumpism." Though calling either an "ism" is a bit of a stretch as both lack any broader supporting theoretical construct. Rather, they are mere expressions of the idea of "distrust in principle."
Suffice to say, this makes governance increasingly problematic. In the extreme, this leads to social and political chaos and that usually does not end well.
President Reagan said, in another context, "trust but verify." That is a sound starting point for trust in government. Recalling that the misuse of government or its overuse can be just as bad. Again, quoting Reagan, "In this present crisis, government is the problem, not the solution." (Emphasis added.)
In short, like any tool, government must be used in the proper way and in the proper context. Suffice to say that distrust of government in principle is the equivalent of distrusting an air pump when you have a flat tire. It does not make much sense.
Which quote? "Trust but verify," or "IN THIS PRESENT CRISIS, government is the problem, not the solution."
Please note that in the latter Reagan was NOT saying he was against government. Only that, as with any tool, it must be used properly and in the appropriate context.
As to the former, that seems a prudent bit of advice.
Hope you are well.
@nightdrot Democratic goverment is only as accountable as it's election can be held on each and every choice said goverment makes.
That means said accountability diminishes with number of Goverment choices, frequency of elections and diversity of the electorate.
More choices regardless of reason due to domain of power or duration of power simply means more issues which must be ignored most or every election making said goverment unaccountable on said issues.
More diverse electorate means more fewer mutually advantageous choices on any subject, and thus more factions willing to ignore bad choices out of fear of even less desirable choices.
If your air pump were part of the constantly broken car you had little choice In buying (being only 1 of 2 options made for unrelated reasons) you might wonder if it was still working when little else was.
@monorprise Sorry, I don't follow. Your writing is a bit unclear.
Accountability is derived in part through elections and in part by the rule of law and in part by the willingness of the public to hold its officials to account for their actions and performance.
Suffice to say that in an imperfect world of imperfect and imperfectible beings that will not always pan out to a standard of moral perfection. However, politics is not about perfection. Indeed, as Russel Kirk said, "The pursuit of Utopia is the primal madness of the species."
The point being that democratic government can be held to account. The other point being that absent the sociological and philosophical prerequisites in society for democratic government, it will not succeed.
There are no assurances of success. Only the opportunity to reform and succeed.
After studying the events of the 20th century, or governments throughout the world, probably slaughtered about 1 billion people I’m not significantly more.
monarchal systems cause world war one
Democracies caused World War II the Weimar republic was a democracy. They voted in Hitler you can’t trust people to vote..
The one you didn’t seem much in the 20th century was theocracies, but we know those are just as dangerous as monarchies or pure democracies. Saudi Arabia is a theocracy, for example.
oligarchy is also that’s dangerous you have a bunch of business is a profit off of wartime expenditures so of course they’re going to encourage more and more fighting throughout the world.
you can’t trust the government to save your life you can’t trust government to save your children’s life. You can only trust you and those close to you
I trust the state and local government 75% or so, I trust the federal government when Democrats are in control zero percent and maybe 50% when Republicans are in control.
I say the solution to the problem is less power for the federal government and more for states rights.
This way, if you don't like something, it is far easier to change on the state level than it is on the federal level.
Essentially how the founding fathers intended it... plus if your state does something you hate, you can move to another state if you don't want to fight to change it.
95% of hot topic issues, if handled on the state level would help people have more trust.
When everything is federally mandated here and there, why not just eliminate state government and have the feds do everything? we are on that path already... one central power to control everything.
"We are the government"? How so? We have no say about what Biden or any other lawmakers do. Just local elections. Did we have a say about Biden opening the border for millions of people coming in and not even knowing who they all are? Do we have any say in how our tax money is spent, or when they raise them?

No. Is there an option for “Hell No”?
With all the Covid lies about it’s origins, the vaccine, and masks, and all the great reset bs (World Economic Forum) and Biden, ATF pistol grip ban, just as a few recent things, the answer is hell no I don’t trust government! They are tyrants and guilty of treason against the constitution and bill of rights!
Government is runned by people, people are naturally flawed and evil, therefore I don't trust the government at all.
911 proved government are willing to conspire and murder their own countrymen as a false flag operation to use it as a excuse to go to war in another country and steal oil.
Your asking me If I trust an organization almost exclusively run by professional liars (politicians) with little to no motivation to tell you the truth?
Of course not.
I do have more trust in Aaron Rodgers, than the government...
Rodgers, he's the safest bet in sports... guaranteed win but you're kind of right, since he spends more time on YouTube or streaming than practicing with the team lmao...
edit/update** no, I am not the government either... I do not vote
Aaron Hernandez... from the Patriots
both drop teammates... but no familial relation
Only a fucking moron trusts their government. It's in the US constitution to naturally distrust absolute authority for a reason. Many of these people are serfs who need guidance so bad they trade their liberty for fake sense of security.
No , between the corruption and the incompetence I would not trust it to run a lemonade stand.
i can trust them on a surface level but when push comes to shove everyone's out for themselves
Generally speaking, no, because there are too many corrupt individuals in positions of power.
They’re all lairs and thieves, just gotta support the ones pushing what you want
No. The government has turned the legal mutual defense agreement into a means of plundering the people.
Absolutely not, quite the opposite actually!
“Don’t trust anybody, Dr. Jones.”
Love those movies though.
Ugh 😩
I still can’t get past the tattoo obsessed camp leader.
No doubt
There are some interesting write-ups on vicious Nazi woman.
Not Joe Biden’s so-called Govt
Nobody should trust the government.
UK here. No, I do not trust my government.
Short term answer YES, with money NO.
Nein, Genosse!
