How much should cops get involved with potential DV couples?

They get a call about slapping, they talk to both parties who wish to move on. If he or she doesn’t want to file charges, but cops see obvious signs of domestic violence, how much power should they have to stop potential tragedies, like this Gabby chick?

People are blaming the cops but they’re not mind readers. Did they have the authority to arrest her boyfriend on claims he slapped her? Maybe.

Let the couple handle it.

It's a difficult one. In general the cops will turn up at a report of domestic abuse and arrest the husband automatically even if he is the victim, even if the woman isn't alleging she was abused. Often accusations of domestic abuse are used as a weapon by women when it comes to divorce and child custody. A fairly common tactic is for a woman who has decided to end a relationship but wants to make sure she has maximum child custody for future child support, possession of the family home and maximum future alimony is to call the police from the bathroom and then go out an instigate a domestic incident with her husband hitting him and trying to make him angry and angry enough to hit her, of course the police arrive and automatically arrest him and he spends the weekend in the county lock up. She empties any joint bank accounts, runs up debts on his credit cards and maybe empties his bank accounts.

It's only now that this stuff is starting to get recognised.

I think the police should be able to separate them for a week just in case because you never know. Sometimes police just get it wrong.

They did have the authority to arrest the guy, in places like Florida and Texas yes they have the Authority in Utah no the don’t have the authority if the women (in this case gabby) doesn’t want to go with the cops after she’s been hit they don’t have the authority to arrest. To be fair this is an issue of federalism states laws differ and the cultures in the state differ even in different countries. My state for example you hit a women on the east side your body won’t be found. The west side of a man hits a women and others see it, her body will be found and no one will say anything. As a matter of fact they would say that’s what she gets from hitting her boyfriend in the first place that is true equality. (See the difference in attitude between democrat and republican at least where I live)

I've seen them intervene when the evidence is clear that there has been an abuse

I've seen people detained, both men and women... but charges were dropped or not even filed, but cops still did something about it

other times, it was still good that the police at least showed up in the first place

i mean in this case there was a public disturbance. domestic violence and a battered woman protecting her batterer. street cops are not the cream of the crop. they're better off shot in the line of duty so they can give their worthless wives the pension

Domestic abuse is one of the most dangerous types of situations cops face. They should have the authority to make arrests and to separated the combatants.

@dustybiker I know in my state they passed a law years ago, if police get called by one of the parties involved, someone is going to jail with an automatic $500 fine. For the reasons you stated. They were tired of wasting their time on calls only to have the parties involved refuse their intervention. However, it's rarely enforced anymore. For the most part cops will have them separate for the night unless there is obvious physical abuse. I'm thinking cops were tired of doing paperwork. But I can see both sides of the argument.
