Why does society (particularly Western) expect men's hairstyles to change as they get older? While it's universally the same for women at any age?

Because guys lose hair so our styles change naturally. Guys have to reinvent and that's good. It keeps us on top of our game and this keeps the woman all hot and bothered which is mutually beneficial in its outworking. We change and grow as we age... Life !!

I don't know about shorter hair being most attractive though, like you said. I think longer hair can also look more attractive. It's just that I feel that shorter, military style haircuts (usually shorter on the sides) have dehumanized men into looking more like leaders, providers and protectors lol. More so than beautiful or pretty.
