Do you trust the police?

Question

I generally trust all the polices in my country, but lately there have been some "incomprehensions", mostly between the police officers and the officers of the civil corps of which I am member (rank of First Senior Band Leader, on paper equivalent of a Lieutenant Colonel).

The rows mainly come from the fact that our uniforms look very military although we don't have any actual authority, and many members that are also public servants (me included) often wear the uniform to public events alongside uniformed police and military. The controversy flared up even more because an ex-parliament member allegedly tried to give orders to a policewoman using his rank of First Senior (on paper a General grade position) which of course didn't go well.

Not sure how to feel now days. As a guy about your age, I was beaten in the back seat of a police car with three other pieces of trash "police officers".

You know what my crime was? Blowing my car horn, in a drive-in restaurant with others and then when he told me to 'leave" I shoved the tray back, and it fell from the holder. When he THEN asked me for my licence, he grabbed my wallet, and I then said "let me take it out" (which he should have said in the beginning)

Took me out of the car, put me in the back seat of the police car (with the other trash looking straight ahead) and punched me in the face and solar plexus, breaking my lip etc.

After that, I Still graduated from a police academy here in California.

But, no, after that beating as a 22 year old by the Akron Ohio Police dept 'trash" I believe anything about police brutality, and assault under cover of authority.

True account. This son of a bitch, did that kind of thing so many times, that he was 'FINALLY taken off of the street and put on a "bad check" desk.

I don't know what that means exactly. In the United States, if you are approached by officers, you should not converse unless they are officially detaining you. And only then, if they suspect you of committing a crime. But that is only to identify yourself and give critical information.

After that, you need to shut the fuck up. There isn't anything you can do to help your situation by protesting your innocence or trying to have a conversation.

I do understand there is good and bad in everything and everyone has to understand that their is a certain amount of dos and donts and no matter what there is going to be a glitch in every category there is no solidity I thought there was in congress but recent things has changed my mind so there’s no loyalty and Pyrenees in almost everything now a days every country and state has issues with there government and authority’s nowadays I haven’t really seen in any state that there hasn’t been some kind of crazy thing u see on tv where the judge gets indicted or some jailer raped a inmate or some kind of crazy stuff like that this day and age this is where the devil has started to really show his face the killers are getting younger and younger and the authorities are getting more ballsy about over stepping there boundaries and not giving a sh////

I recognize that there will be some police officers who abuse their power, but most of them don't, and I begin with the assumption that every police officer is trying to properly perform their duties.

Of course. As a minority for sure. But I have a lot of respect for them. Don’t get me wrong w in every job there’s always bad apples, maybe I’m just lucky having never ran into those bad apples in the PD. Maybe it’s cause I showed respect. I’ve been pulled over numerous times especially when I was younger for speeding, but always spoke to them w respect. I’ve never had an attitude w them or tried to throw out the race card when I knew I got caught. So aside from them stopping me cause of stupid shit I did, there was never an issue w cops. Now as far as some of my cousins, dumb ass idiots who were raised w that mentality to not trust cops had a different outcome. But they were always getting into some shit, even now in their 40’s they still blame society for their failures, which may be partially true but not so much today. Everyone has different experiences, I just know myself as well as my 3 younger brothers have never had issues w law enforcement. Just for the record if it matters I’m Native American.

I've never run into an officer that tried to throw his weight around or anything, most of the time it was a quick exchange, if they pulled me over for something or drinking and driving stop. That being said, I never gave them reason to do anything else. I am level headed and don't get nervous, they're just people too.

I know one thing, I never provide more information than necessary and never apologize for doing something wrong, like being 10 or 15 over the speed limit. I always say... I didn't realize I was 15 over... end of story. You apologize, or tell them I won't ever do it again, you may as well ask for the ticket. I might even joke with them a bit to lighten the mood. By the time they are done with me, I am driving away and it's like I just made a new friend.

So... ya I trust the police, bc I don't give them a reason not to trust me.

Where I live in England, we've recently had two big cases involving corrupt policemen.

In one case, an off duty policeman lured a young woman to his car, raped and murdered her. He then burnt her body and hid her corpse in the woods.

Another case involves a police officer raping a young child. I've also read about multiple cases where police officers have SHARED photos of dead bodies they've taken at crime scenes.

I'll still call them if I need them but the point is you can't trust anybody.

Yes, I assume they mean well and are doing their job. I aim to be pleasant and non threatening. I'm honest with them.

I've been pulled over and some are tense.

I rode with police in the front one night, I see why they are tense. I honestly don't know why they do the job and apparently in many places, people are choosing not to, making matters worse.

I'm more concerned about criminals repeating crimes, creating more trauma, that's what I see going on in my area.

I’ve never had any issues with police, they’ve helped me with two separate cases in the past. But that doesn’t mean that I trust them. I’ve heard countless stories from friends about police abusing their power towards my friends. And I know abusive, corrupt men who are in my local police force. So no, I don’t trust police.

In central European countries, absolutely. Most cops I have met were really good guys (as in, they could have ticketed me, but never did). I have only encountered one asshole (traffic) cop and two or three eager-beavers.

If its not my bro who runs a K9 unit I tend to sweat bullets around cops. Simply cause I live where cop interactions are often sketchy. Cost of living I guess where minorities have gotten shot excessively and being Asian.

Well I live in the UK so it might be a little different where you are. But no, I do not trust the police. It's worth remembering that the police aren't there to help you, they are there to maintain what currently passes for public order in our sceptic isle.

Not really, no. I know how to behave around police so that I don't alarm them or make them feel threatened, but a lot of people don't know how to do this, and that is where the trouble starts.

I think that the best thing people can do is to stay well away from the police whenever possible.

Yes I do. I remain polite and calm, do exactly what they ask and do nothing that could trigger anything. With this approach I never had trouble with police, ever.

There are some good ones out there but generally no. Too many lie in their reports and abuse their power at the expense of poor and minority groups. People just aren’t treated equitably. Hard to trust an institution in such a state of rot.
