How is it that so many people in the United States are unable to seek treatment because of the astronomical cost of treatment?

I'll try to extend my question.

The USA is the country that spends the most on its healthcare system, and the figures I'm seeing are pretty terrifying.

I know that you have health insurance, but that some of them don't cover all the care you need.

If I have to make a comparison with my own country, I don't understand how the US manages to reach such a level.

In France, life expectancy will be 82.5 years in 2021, almost back to pre-pandemic levels (82.9 years) after the drop in 2020. Since 2014, the US population has been losing a few months of life expectancy each year, and the decline has worsened sharply in 2020 and 2021, with a decline of 2.7 years in two years, to 76.1 years.

Of course, the healthcare system is not the only determinant of life expectancy, which is also linked to lifestyle and eating habits.

But most other health indicators show similar trends. According to the OECD, infant mortality is 3.6 per 1,000 births in France, compared with 5.4 per 1,000 in the United States. Maternal mortality in the USA is 23.8 per 100,000, the worst rate among industrialized countries, compared with 8 per 100,000 in France. The rate of preventable deaths thanks to treatment is 51 per 100,000 inhabitants in France, compared with over 90 in the United States.

Indicators of access to healthcare also show significant differences. According to the latest OECD figures, the density of doctors in France is 317 per 100,000 inhabitants (370 if interns working in healthcare establishments are included), compared with 261 in the United States. The number of hospital beds is 2.9 per 1,000 inhabitants in the United States, and 5.9 in France.

And yet, the United States is the country that spends the highest proportion of its GDP on healthcare, at 17.8% in 2021.

Mind you, my aim here is not to say that the French system is better. I'm sincerely trying to understand how this is possible.

I'm sure there's a lot I don't understand, so I'd be delighted to learn more.

Forgive me for making this comparison with France, but as it's my country, it was easier for me to make this comparison with France.
