Today I debated with a person with very strong feelings of anti-Americanism coupled with a general hatred of Western nations.

China and Russia, defend their peoples and everything that is said about the Chinese or Russian regimes are lies invented by the media to demonize these countries. Honestly, democratic countries are not perfect and they have their faults, but I would rather live without any hesitation in a democratic country, no matter which one, than live in an authoritarian regime...
Why do we hear more and more people criticizing democratic regimes and praising authoritarian regimes?
Russia and even moreso China treat their populations like expendable livestock, and the US treats the population like pieces in a board game. Your friend has a point regarding the US, but overall it's the viewpoint of a childish fantasy. Regarding the US, it has long tended to support even friendly tyrants over hostile or uncooperative democracies, even during the Cold War. Whatever outcome is believed by our elected and non-elected leaders to be the best for the nation's goals is what they will pursue, and it's only a fairly recent trend (post-cold war) for US leaders to whore itself out for globalist goals, which almost never have lasting benefits for anyone except for an elite few. Regarding a growing affinity or at least tolerance for authoritarianism, you can easily observe this in American politics and voter sentiment. Despite constantly grandstanding over "this is a threat to our democracy!!!" both the right and left are generally content to support or look the other way whenever their side does something authoritarian, aka "it's only bad when 'they' do it."
As soon as I started reading your thread I was 100% sure that it's referring to ethno-bolsheviks, fake patriots who worship chinese technocratic communism and soviet shitskin russian expansionism. Not a surprise here. These suicidal ethno-bolshevik positions are so widespread in the west today because that was the goal of russia to begin with. Patriotic circles have been hijacked by brain-polluted self-hating whites who would rather see their nations destroyed and their people replaced by every other race on the planet just because sick teachers read homosexual porn to little schoolchildren. If you spend 5 minutes talking to someone in a democratic country with strong political views it becomes apparent that they don't believe in democracy. Their view is the other side should never ever be in power and must be stopped at any cost.
Only far left wingers and far right wingers praise authoritarian and totalitarian regimes.
However there is some criticism of some Democratic countries like Canada and the UK because they are turning into authoritarian regimes themselves.
The US for the most part isn’t authoritarian but it does need to abolish both the death penalty and extradition for non violent crimes as innocent people can fall victim to them.
Partly a greater willingness to examine and critique the failings and limits of democratic nations (as you say, they're not perfect), but mostly, an ever-declining memory of what living under tyranny was actually like. Russia's not a particularly free country under Putin, but it's a paradise compared to what it was like under Stalin.
It's the same with wars: tolerance for the idea goes WAY up when you start running out of veterans.
because Democracy is the rule of many against the minority. the majority of people on this planet are lazy, stupid, and incappable of running their own lives. the few got their shit together. the few cannot fix the worlds problems in a Democracy. they are outnumbered. the many fear the things that need to happen to fix the world because they are the problem.
Democracy and authoritarianism are far from being mutually exclusive and democracy is just utter shit. Yeah, alternatives are worse, but that doesn't mean that democracies are fundamentally good.
It's directly linked to the collapsing economy. When a person's livelihood is threatened they are more likely to blame the system than problem solve themselves.
