What do you mean by choose their gender? Do I care if a child calls themselves male female or other... No.

If you are asking can a 12 year old decide if they need gender reassignment surgery. As a medical professional I will tell you that is malpractice and not anything that happens commonly in the US. Until a child's growth plates have closed that surgery won't even be considered by a surgeon. A expert in the field has a battery of requirements both physically and mentally testing before that type of procedure. The gender reassignment question framed in a you pre teen, most common as a thought experiment, used by fear mongers to promote anger and fear in the general population. About something that really is not an issue. It is what we call a straw man argument. A flasehood that is much easier to argue about than the actual problem. Many do not really understand what this question, the way you framed the question, even really means. I know that this is not what you were going for here. Ambiguous generalized questions about a nuanced, complicated, and difficult subjects. Are what fearmomger and haters use. I know that's not you, you're just curious, but it the problem with the question as you have framed it.

Y’all act like kids are getting sex change surgeries as often as they eat a piece of candy. Minors do not get surgery, or even switch hormones through hormone therapy. They get puberty blockers, a completely harmless  reversible  therapy that allows them to grow and make the decision when they’re of legally sound mind and body, in this case 6 years later. No doctor on any side of the argument condones gender reassignment surgery on anyone under the age of 18.

Jeez... At 12 I literally still had barbie dolls. I had my tomboy moments where i wrestled with my boy cousins, played baseball. But being a girl didn't stop me from doing anything. there's no reason to even have to decide something like that at 12 in my opinion. I don't think at that age we should be worrying about choosing a gender.

If they know their gender identity at that age good for them. All kids really do is get haircuts, experiment with clothes, jewelry, etc. Sex surgery isn't allowed at that age, but they can still explore their gender identity with what they can.

My understanding of these issues, based on my experiences with these individuals, is that the mature person in Q either knows ALREADY or has been questioning their gender identity for many years before 12! Making it illegal for a 12 yo to make a big personal decision like this amounts to depriving someone of their basic human rights.
