Stalin - is the biggest traitor Georgia has ever given birth to.

He was Georgian, he was born and grew up in Georgia, his first language was Georgian, he even wrote poetry in our language, and lived in a village very close to mine. But he always hated Georgia, due to the fact that he was bullied here in the first years of his life.

As a revenge and a hatred to Georgia, he sold our lands to our neighboring countries, piece by piece,

And when he ruled the Soviet Union and could do something beneficial for his own country, he instead killed all the intelligence and honest people who lived there and tried to do the good for their homeland.

Honestly, with his power he could turn Georgia into a heaven if only he wished, but he instead used his hatred to ruin it.

He was a psychopath who had no respect to lives of people, but Georgia was its main victim because all the monsters start by destroying the places that created them.

In the US, it wasn't a country yet, but Benedict Arnold is probably the most well-known traitor. As an American General, he tried to give the British the American fort at West Point, fled to Britain, and became a General in the British army.

The Russian revolution, in Trotsky’s view, underwent a partial counter-revolution during the first part of the 1930s. That is to say, the process of radically changing Russian society, which began in February 1917, came to an end and actually went into reverse. In explaining this process, Trotsky made an analogy with the French Revolution, which went through a series of increasingly radical phases up until 1794, after which, with the arrest and execution of Robespierre and Saint-Juste, it became more conservative. Historians often refer to the post-July 1794 of the revolution as the ‘Thermidorean Reaction’, after the name of the month in which Robespierre was executed.

The main feature of this reactionary phase was a reduction in political rights for ordinary people. Robespierre, for all his bloodthirsty reputation and actual dictatorial practices, had actually supported universal male suffrage. The new government (the Directory) pushed through a new constitution abolishing this democratic feature, the result being a government of the rich which launched violent attacks on the Jacobins, the main revolutionary party which had become a mass force in the early 1790s.

Trotsky seems to have believed that this type of reaction was a normal feature of revolutions which, like any other Marxist, he conceived as a process of intense, highly politicized class struggle. According to his analysis, the radical classes would eventually exhaust themselves in their fight against the more conservative classes. The more radical would want to push the revolution forward, toward an ever-more radical break with the past, whilst the more conservative would want the revolution to stop, and to preserve the status quo. A key feature is this defeat would be the way in which the most radical revolutionaries, as a result of political errors, lost the sympathy of the masses who raised them to prominence in the first place.

Apply this general idea to the Soviet Union, Trotsky argued that Russia’s numerically-small industrial working class had played the central role in smashing first of all the tsarist autocracy and then the pro-capitalist Provisional Governments of February-October 1917. In doing this smashing, it had won the support of the overwhelming mass of the peasantry, the small farmers and craftsmen of the countryside. This was despite the fact that most of the peasants were not really communist: they were small-scale capitalists, traders, in terms of their economic mode of existence. They supported the Bolsheviks mostly because of their anti-war position and because they offered a re-division of the land, the expropriation of the big, tsar-supporting landlords.

This peasantry was prevailed upon to support the Reds in the Civil War owing to a promise of land, a promise that was kept, but with peace established, the Bolsheviks knew they had little choice but to accept the free-market preferences of the peasants. They introduced the New Economic Policy, permitting free trade in the countryside after a period of emergency wartime measures, a type of command economy. This represented the first stage in the cooling off of the Russian revolution. Subsequently, a fair amount of capitalism was tolerated in the USSR, alongside state-owned enterprises. Lenin and Trotsky argued this was an inevitable retreat, and that the revolution could only gain a new lease of radical energy by expanding into western Europe, where the peasantry were a negligible social force, as opposed to the majority.

Along with this retreat in the economic sphere, certain compromises emerged in the sphere of politics. Establishing a planned economy required the help of technical experts, who could only be prevailed upon to work for the state at elevated salaries, violating the Bolshevik’s extremely egalitarian social policies. The free-market part of the NEP also led to the growth of rich peasants and traders in the countryside. Together they made up what some commentators refer (somewhat mockingly ) as the Soviet middle class, or Soviet bourgeoisie.

As it was the main source of political power in the country, this new middle class sought to join the Communist Party, and the latter was (according to Trotsky) swamped by a combination of these social climbers and a much larger layer of people without revolutionary pedigree, i. e. they had played little role in either the revolt of 1917 or the Civil War. They were a new generation.

In connection with this process, Trotsky refers in particular to the ‘Lenin Levy’ of 1924, in which 250,000 new members were allowed in to an organisation just 50,000 strong.

Trotsky had become critical of these ‘Thermidorean’ developments during the 1920s, and along with numerous other leaders of 1917 made a last stand in the Communist Party in 1927 (the Joint Opposition). Most of this opposition was expelled from the Party shortly afterwards, though most were readmitted after recanting. Trotsky did not recant. He was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1931.

One result of this was a new Soviet Constitution (1936) which replaced the old one (1924) that had committed the Soviet state to exporting revolution around the world. Stalin decided that this revolutionary outlook would have to come to an end if the Soviet regime were to survive. The transition to socialism was therefore declared to have been ‘completed’ so that foreign capitalist allies would not feel threatened. This in Trotsky’s eyes was comparable to Bonaparte’s actions in 1799, when he took power in France and put an end to the revolution by instituting his own personal dictatorship (he overthrew the Directory). Rather like Bonaparte, Stalin, having fought the pro-rich Thermidoreans (during 1929–34) in his own interests rather more than in the interests of the poor, ‘called off’ the revolution by making himself the nation’s supreme dictator and repressing all opponents, regardless of faction, supposedly in the national interest, i. e. in the interests of all classes.

Stalin’s repressions from 1936–8 are of course, notorious. Three massive public show trials convicted dozens of those who had played their part in the October revolution, all on utterly spurious charges. Hundreds of thousands of ordinary activists were killed after summary trials. Their purpose was firstly to convince foreign powers that the USSR was no longer revolutionary (though the defendants were inevitably accused of collaborating with some foreign power to appease the Soviet audience), thus facilitating an alliance against Nazism. A secondary purpose was to rid the Soviet Union of any forces capable of raising a rebellion against the government during a future war, which was widely anticipated.

By way of ending this long answer, I’d like to draw attention to the very simplistic nature of some of the other answers given below, especially the idea that people are opposed to Stalin on the grounds that he was ‘the unacceptable face of Communism’ or some similarly superficial allegation regarding these people as being ‘in denial’ about Communism and so forth.

I was looking for something and randomly came across this. My dad was always saying he gave them special rights and it was the only Soviet Republic where people were allowed to own private land, and for this region Georgia was the richest Soviet Republic. I saw conflicting information online. Most said it's not true, but other says he didn't hate Georgia. I decided to ask some of my guides while I was there.

The first guy said, "All he did was sent Georgians to the frontlines", but the other guy was so nostalgic saying the Soviets/Stallin gave you guys EVERYTHING, housing, education, healthcare and that Georgia was the richest Soviet Republic.

Another guide said there's one guy who's really obsessed with him and you guys joke about him, but for the most part he's not well liked, except in Gori. I did see one truck with a Stallin sticker, and then of course there's the merchandise, but not underwear oddly enough.

There seems to be a love/hate relationship. On one had, he was an evil dictator, but on the other hand, they seem sort of proud of him, as he's like the only globally famous Georgian. I can't a Hitler museum/or merchandise. I wrote a MyTake about my visit to the Stallin Museum, if you're interested.

I think most Americans will agree that title goes to Benedict Arnold. He was a very respected General in the Revolutionary War, but after he fell on hard times and needed money, he ended up working with the British.

He didn't let his nationalistic roots. Create prejudice and discrimination amongst Georgians and non Georgian people. He looked at the world holistically and if he had looked at Georgia as his only country to rule and prosper then I am pretty sure WW2 would have nazified all of Eastern Europe because he wouldn't have been able to rally anyone for the greater good of the USSR. This man sacrificed his son in the war. He is far bigger man then all of the politicians and bureaucrats combined. You are really just sad that Georgia hasn't done much for itself and it's politicians didn't do anything in post USSR era. Gorbachev was also Georgian, I don't see you hating him because he ruined USSR as per wishes of the west and let a nationalism wave ruin it. Both men from Georgia lived in relative simplicity.

Become inclusive of others and that's what Stalin did. His wrong actions were mainly directed against Ukrainians and not Georgia like you proclaimed. Pogrom and he purges of people were his wrong deeds.

But also take a look at wealth of the politicians of today and how they have mistresses and squander wealth of people for their children. His son's didn't rule USSR. You might claim you know your country better but you really don't because you were born after dissolution of the USSR which in itself was a tragedy. The harmony people built before was greater than the unity of today. The emphasis and brain washing of the people by politicians that one country is better stems from needless nationalism because even during times of the Tsars or Emperors the borders were not sealed. and people could travel wherever they liked. World didn't need to be divided like it was done in 20th century and 19th century with British and French giving each country a nationality and divide and rule them as feeble nations

Not sure about any individual but one of note is the village of Aberedw. They betrayed the last native prince of wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282 which let the Normans finally take over Wales.
