Using a drug for the first time is a choice. Being addicted to that drug is NOT a choice. We don’t look down on someone for catching the flu, but for some strange reason a mental illness like addiction or severe depression is not treated the same way.
Well, it’s illegal pretty much across the board. This means someone is choosing to do something illegal. They know (unless living under a stone) that drugs are addictive, they still chose to carry on with this illegal activity that has a very high chance of turning them into an addict, being an addict is the result of a poor decision making process prior to becoming an addict. Comparing how we deal with those catching the flu, tonsillitis etc with a drug addict is pointless, a person has not chosen to get the flu or tonsillitis, they may even have went out of their way to prevent it. Why are they chastised, a bit like alcoholics, they do not fit in well with society, often have other issues related to their drug addiction, these may be mental health or physical issues. Once addicted, they do have the option to get support, often this is not even contemplated they remain addicted and get into a downward spiral.

Drug addiction is bad, but why are drugs addicting? Mostly because they're an escape. The problem goes much deeper than the drugs themselves.
