If in the 1950s & 60s, the discrimination against Asians was greater than against blacks, why has Asians overcome discrimination but blacks have not?

According to Walter Block, The out-of-wedlock birth rate among blacks in 1940 was about 11%; today, it is 75%. Black female-headed households were just 18% of households in 1950, as opposed to about 68% today. Even during slavery, when marriage was forbidden, most black children lived in biological two-parent families. In New York City, in 1925, 85% of black households were two-parent households. A study of 1880 family structure in Philadelphia shows that three-quarters of black families were two-parent households.

Should we blame this tragedy on racial discrimination or claim that it is a legacy of slavery? Dr. Thomas Sowell’s research in “Education: Assumptions Versus History” documents academic excellence at Baltimore’s Frederick Douglass High School and others. This academic excellence occurred during the late 1800s to mid-1900s, an era when blacks were much poorer than today and faced gross racial discrimination. Frederick Douglass High School of yesteryear produced many distinguished alumni, such as Thurgood Marshall and Cab Calloway, and several judges, congressmen and civil rights leaders. Frederick Douglass High School was second in the nation in black Ph. Ds. among its alumni.

According to statistics about fatherless homes, 90% of homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes; 71% of pregnant teenagers lack a father figure; 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes; 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes; and 70% of juveniles in state-operated institutions have no father. Furthermore, fatherless boys and girls are twice as likely to drop out of high school and twice as likely to end up in jail. Dr. Thomas Sowell has argued, “The black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and discrimination, began rapidly disintegrating in the liberal welfare state that subsidized unwed pregnancy and changed welfare from an emergency rescue to a way of life.”

I often like to use the example of Asian Indians in this context since they were denied natural citizenship and property rights until the mid 19th century (United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind, e. g.). Yet they managed to, in a single generation, become the wealthiest ethnic group, completing dominating STEM, and no doubt despite facing a lot of discrimination.

I especially like to use this example because I encountered many who claimed that the reason Asians do so well is because we have pale skin similar to white people, so white people embraced us as one of their own. My sociology professor even taught this to explain why Asians have the highest median income. I actually find this quite offensive given how many white people told me to go back to my own country to blame my academic and financial success on the idea that white people embraced me as one of their own.

Above all else, it blatantly overlooks the fact that the wealthiest Asian ethnicity of them all are Asian Indians who generally don't have the palest skin.

I have no doubt that discrimination of minorities exists (I have experienced my share when I lived in the US), but to claim it is a significant factor in economic inequalities seems to blatantly fail the most basic smell test.

The greatest advantage I think Asians have, in general, is that most are still very traditional with respect to marriage, family values, and hard work. They have been minimally impacted by the sexual revolution of the 60s, e. g.

The reason that Asians do better than ADOS black people is they keep their families intact and in line. Asians rarely divorce, have a low out-of-wedlock birth rate, and keep their kids disciplined unlick the black community where most kids are raised by baby mommas with no dad around and often zero discipline. As a result these kids grow up to be degenerates or baby mommas themselves and the cycle of failure continues. Feminism is what destroyed the black community, not white supremacy or "systemic racism".

I can only speculate, but I think a lot of it had to do with their history of isolationism and having to rely on themselves. So they never expected handouts or expected anyone to feel sorry for them, so they knew they had to succeed by their own means. But also Asians came to terms with the fact that their behavior was causing hatred. After Japan got hit by an atomic bomb, the Japanese people acknowledged that they had only themselves to blame. They saw first hand the consequences of their behavior and decided from that point on, they would be Pacifists. 20-30 years really isn't a long time, so a lot of people still had the old image of Asians in their heads, but also they knew they still had a problem with gangs and prostitution in those days. And since none of them wanted another Hiroshima, they decided to just keep quiet about it.

Black people on the other hand are the complete opposite. They have never put any responsibility on themselves, and also culturally they never had a strong work ethic. They never had any MAJOR empires or had a significant impact on the world. They shared some similarities with Asians in the sense that they didn't want to live under anyone else's rule.

The truth is, White people are largely to blame for blacks being the way they are right now. Whites have been manipulated into feeling sorry for slavery and how blacks were treated in the past by their ancestors. Eventually, blacks came to the realization of, "Why should we work, when we can get money the easy way?" Blacks have had everything handed to them by playing the victim, and this had made them lazy. But when I was growing up, I don't recall any racism against blacks. The racism returned after Obama resurrected the black nationalist movement, because White people became tired of black people's constant bitching, demanding more and more and playing the race card whenever they didn't get their way. They didn't bother anyone when they kept quiet, but now they're just annoying people.

How do you measure the amount of discrimination?

(Young lady, that is a very legitimate question. I am not asking you to answer it, but, going forward in life, you will be challenged repeatedly to clarify and quantify your statements. Furthermore, you should always ask yourself such questions as part of being your own Devil's Advocate when formulating an argument.)

OK, well, for me, the "amount of discrimination" is simply just that - based in the numbers of people being discriminated against.

Given that the population of Asians in this country has not been high compared to Blacks (and still isn't), Blacks were definitely discriminated against more. Furthermore, Blacks are more ubiquitous than Asians who were mostly in the cities of the Northeast and the West Coast.

Second, because most of the Asians who have arrived since have come from a more affluent background. In the US, the Blacks who are here are descended from those who came from slave ships.

Third, ethnic nepotism is rampant among many groups - it's how a group gets ahead. In the Black community, that is more difficult and there isn't a focus because there's no "home country" from which they came.

In the 1950s and 1960s, if you want to judge the amount of discrimination based on total numbers, then obviously black were more discriminated against. However, based on discrimination per person, it was ten time worse for Asians.

Several reasons, but the biggest one was Lyndon Johnson's Great Society reforms. One of the most relevant changes was that women could now get Welfare if they were unwed mothers or divorced with children - but ONLY if there was no man in the house. This encouraged women - especially black women - to trade a husband for government assistance. Divorce in the black community skyrocketed, as did unwed pregnancy and single motherhood.

We are still feeling the effects of this, and of course it spread to other racial groups too, but none as much as far blacks.

Many black people still believe that Johnson was an ally to the black community because of the Great Society program, but he knew exactly what he was doing, and said so in front of people more than once, and in very racist words.

Maybe because blacks refuse to let it go and make a much bigger deal of it than it was. Even Morgan Freeman says, if you wanna stop racism, stop talking about it!! We Irish got treated MUCH worse than blacks when we were slaves and you never hear us bitching about it, begging for reparations or looting stores just to supposedly get even for it. Because people from Asia keep things for themselves inside their communities. They never showed it bothered them, so with time, the discrimination burned out...

When I was a kid, my mom told me not to show other people what bothered me so they would never know how to hurt me. I think the same rule worked here.

Discrimination against Asians in the US was attributed to the wars fought by the US in Asia. Similarly, German-Americans experienced discrimination and persecution during World War I. Since the 1960s, Asians have been able to demonstrate their status as respectable citizens through their high intelligence quotients.

Outside the South and perhaps even there, absolutely Asians were more discriminated against. Recall what happened when FDR put most Asians in consternation camps. And, because of all the war-time lies and propaganda, for the next twenty plus years the American public had a hatred of Japanese and a dislike of Chinese.

No, I mean, why do you think Asians achieved better outcomes?

Probably for the same reason the South Koreans have achieved such a high standard of living in spite of the country having so few natural resources. Part of it is higher average intelligence. Every test of whatever type has established that Asians have considerable higher average IQ's than blacks.

The second reason and perhaps even more important, is the desire to achieve and the willingness to work hard to achieve it by all members of family. I watch a lot of Korean drama and both the parents and the student are highly motivated for the students to get the best grades and test scores so they can get into the best universities. I recall seeing students working a math problem that no high school in the USA would have. In fact, it was a problem that I could not work and I am in my second year of college and my minor is math.

The primary difference is culture. Asian families tend to have far more traditional values and morality. Not so among black Americans. The biggest enemy blacks face in America is black culture, and they are the only ones who can fix it.
