Why should we celebrate Columbus Day according to you? What do you understand to be the facts about him that support or oppose your point of view on him having or not having a holiday?

Let people celebrate what they want let's be honest how many days can we celebrate. Have you ever seen for instance how many days there are for all the various saints and martyrs of the Catholic Church? There's too many.

Columbus i think already knew the earth was round and that there was land to the west before he sailed, only he mistakenly thought it was Asia. The last ship returned from Greenland to Norway in 1408 so Europeans were in America as recent as 84 years before columbus sailed and he would have been aware of this due to the Scandinavian trade routes which linked Greenland to Scandinavia, then to Iceland, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, then to constantinople which had fallen 40 years b4 columbus's voyage with most of its knowledge traveling to the Italian city states such as Genoa which columbus came from and mercenaries Genoa defended constantinople.
The Portuguese knew what columbus knew too. At the same time they were trying to go around the horn of Africa and were planning a voyage. The Portuguese king suggested to columbus thst there was a vast continent further south West of the islands columbus discovered because of Portuguese contact in their colonies in africa because Africans had been there too.
It's also worth noting that the vikings traveled to mainland America multiple times for 400 years, they failed to settle due to the small numbers but America is mentioned in records in Genoa in the mid 1300s. The Pope in 1410 remarked about the disappearance of the norse colony in Greenland.

Columbus never met north American Indians. He discovered Caribbean region and Central America. North American Indians have as much common with Indians from central America like in old world have Swedes with Tibetans.

Genghis Khan discovered Europe from reference point of people in Eastern Asia, he came, European defeated him, his Empire fell apart. Case closed. Of course we could delete him from history but why?

This whole new-age view of Columbus doesn't add up to me. Wasn't he supposed to be on a trade mission to India (hence how we used "Indians" as a term for native Americans)? If so, what did he think he would accomplish by trying to piss off a major trade partner to Italy by going on a rampage and kill a bunch of people in cold blood? Was he trying to start a war or something?

I have always just referred to what I learned in school in the mid-2000s: Columbus arrived in the Americas on accident, discovering the existence of these lands, made a trade with the people there and left. It satisfies Occam's Razor in my opinion. Believing that he went on a rampage doesn't add up with the rest of the story and makes to many assumptions.

Have the holidays back to back but not on the same day.

Cresting new “counter” holidays on the same day as the traditional holiday openly shows the new holiday if purely motivated by radicalism, malice and resentment. Is that a holiday that will be celebrated joyously?

My understanding is that the day is a remembrance of Columbus' achievement of discovering the Americas, and not a celebration of the man in general.

Columbus was used as a propaganda figure for the revolutionary war. He was the most notable non British person for the new world. Even if we never made it to the mainland.

Spilt the difference with Leif Erickson day. That 10/9 so why not.

We Canadians have a Sept.30 Truth and Reconciliation Holiday to honour our Indigenous Peoples and apologize for their historic genocidal oppression and your Columbus Day should be renamed to apologize for your First Nations genocide.(The righties on here will call me a "soy boy," but I have Status Indian cousins who were next-door neighbours when we were children, other First Nations relatives and my BFF, Jamie Logsdon, is one-quarter Cherokee, though he never talks about it and as a lad in Indianapolis before moving here to Windsor, played Cowboys and Indians).

Columbus day celebrates an enormously important achievement of uniting the old and new world. The fact that it didn't work out so well for some people like the muslims who lost their trade monopoly and most of the various native Americans does not change the fact that it was a great achievement.

Major innovations always works out better for some people than for others.

Given the historical significance of Columbus‘ voyages to the Americas, the holiday should remain Columbus Day. A separate day for the indigenous peoples of the Americas would also be justified, IMHO.
