If someone generalises and judges based on their experiences , are they biased?
895 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I think that's the definition of bias. It's why judges and lawyers have to recuse themselves if they have had any dealings with you. Or they're supposed to anyway.
It isn't necessarily a bad thing though. We can only remember and keep so many people close to us, and everyone else gets "typed". That could be by locale, race, career, dialect, you name it.
I'm much more inclined towards trusting firefighters than cops for instance due to past dealings there. That's certainly a bias, but it likely isn't going to go away until the day I die, nor do I feel any need to correct it.

It would be considered being biased. Just because someone has had experiences with certain types of people, it does not mean all of those types of people are bad or good or unfriendly or whatever. I do think that basing off your experience is better than blind judgment but everyone is different.
I am not necessarily saying that bias is such a terrible thing. It is actually a very human thing but oftentimes people have such biased opinions that do not even make any sense, and that is when it becomes a big problem

Anonymous(18-24)1 yYup, that's a bias.
I don't think a bias should be stigmatized until fully understood though.
For instance... black people and smoke detectors with the low battery chirp going of every 30 to 35 seconds... that bias of mine didn't come from nowhere you kno

Yes, they are biased.
Generalizing and judging people as a group If you don't agree with a person, labeling them all the time is bad.
It's more self-destructive, it makes you negative and leads you into false thinking. It's not bad to be wary of a whole group after experiencing some bad times with someone. Just don't overdo something so much that people start judging the group you represent

m 1 yI think we're all biased, constantly.
It's extremely difficult to not be biased, because we look at the world from the narrow window of our personal experience, willingly or unconsciously. The world is much too vast to be comprehended by a single soul so we're using a shortcut, generalizing from our personal experience, so the world can make sense to us?
00 Reply Isn’t virtually everything we do influenced by our past experiences? I’m thinking about things like what we wear, what we eat, what we do for entertainment. You can call those choices biased. I don’t think it’s necessarily bad.
When we prejudge other people based on our experiences and not their actions, that’s bad.
00 Reply6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Pre-judging someone based on the fact that they are part of a group like race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, political ideology, or whatever, without assessing them as an individual is bias.
Not everyone who falls into a group category is the same.
People who can't judge people on an individual basis are stupid bigots who create their own misery.01 Reply- 1 y
1 yIts useful though,
If its right 90% of the time, it's worth the 10% it's wrong.
It's only bias if you ignore the 10% error and refuse to re evaluate when you see counter evidence.
Judging based on experience is called skill.

How about my bias towards Netflix doing race swaping? 01 Reply1.3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. No, not at all.
If they have had 2 ex wifes and a couple 2 3 ex girlfriends that were cheating on them and they state that based on my past experiences with cheating, being cheated on sucks.
Not biased at all.
If they say all women cheat, that is a bit biased.00 Reply- 4.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
1 yThey are simply playing the odds based on past experiences. If each time you touch a stove you get burned, maybe you should stop touching stoves. Or, use a non-contact thermometer to test it before you touch it. Too bad there isn't a way to test people until AFTER you have dealt with them and gotten burned.

Anonymous(36-45)1 yYes they are, they are punishing a whole group because because of one bad apple. Not too long ago I mentioned I don't cast judgement based on race and gender, and suddenly I'm labeled sexist and racist and blocked because of some idiot on social media making racist and sexist comments.
