Why do people flee communist and socialist countries?

My wife left China and became a US citizen because she was tired of fearing her government, she was tired of food shortages, and she was tired of needing permission to do things that we do freely in the US.
@OlderAndWiser Best explanation I can think of.
Thanks for telling it like it is. It's amazing how many people are defending communism these days.
Thousands of people flee communism every year, and hundreds of thousands more would if they had a chance. How many people flee democracy?
None
@Bricealan Have YOU fled, or do YOU plan to flee, democracy?
Who's defending communism?
@OlderAndWiser No, of course not. I would never leave the U. S. Have been to Europe: I. e. Germany, last July, England, France, and Italy. All very beautiful countries with the exception of England. Going to Greece, if I can clear this Sciatica problem with my surgeon.
@Bricealan All is well. Good luck and safe travels!
Only a dictator likes a dictatorship!

First of all, there are no "communist countries", utopian communism is a stateless, moneyless, and classless society - no country in history was ever a "communist country" (because communism was never achieved as a society).
USSR was a socialist country (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) - just like all the other ex so called "communist countries".
- Sure, communist party ruled them but - They acted as a higher authority, disrespecting the rule of classless society (members of the party were privileged - therefore, they were not genuine communists).
- Also, all the so called "communist countries" had their currency - therefore, they didn't have moneyless society - not genuine communism.
- And finally - Marx believed that in utopian society such as Communism - the state would become "unnecessary" and eventually wither away (but as we all know, USSR and the other so called "communist countries" all preserved their statehood)... therefore, no genuine communist country is possible - all of them were socialist countries (including present-day China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba etc).
People who were fleeing from those countries were mostly:
- Religious freaks (western countries tolerate religious fanaticism)
- Criminals (western countries were more tolerant to their line of work)
- Traitors (people who lack loyalty to their own country - they would betray west too, if they would get a better opportunity)
- Perverts (western liberals just love them)
Most fully socialist countries are run by corrupt people. I think it's important to distinguish the difference between full socialist countries like and democratic socialist countries. (copied online to save time typing)
Countries with a state-controlled socialist economy
China: A one-party state governed by the Chinese Communist Party, though it allows market activity.
Cuba: A well-known socialist state with a state-controlled economy.
Laos: Officially operates under a socialist framework with a constitution based on Marxist-Leninist principles.
North Korea: Considered a hardline socialist state with a non-Marxist-Leninist ideology.
Vietnam: Has a socialist-oriented market economy, where the Communist Party allows for markets under state supervision
Countries with strong social welfare programs (Social Democracies)
These countries blend capitalism with extensive social welfare systems, often funded by high taxes, and are not typically considered socialist states in the same sense as the countries above.
Sweden
Norway
Finland
Denmark
Portugal: Has prominent socialist parties in government, but operates as a democratic republic.
I recommend traveling to multiple Democratic socialist countries on this list and tell me we're doing better over here. The world socialism is something to be concerned with but people have to fully understand the differences between communism, socialism, and democratic socialism. They're used interchangeably by most Americans.
I do not want full socialism or Communism for America and guess what it's not in danger despite what crying radical news talk show hosts say.
Many European countries are socialist. The people enjoy social programs. A certain amount of socialism is a good thing when it is designed to benefit the citizens. I mean, what's wrong with government funded health care, schools, mass transit, pensions, low cost housing, police and emergency services?
People flee repressive, authoritarian communist countries.
People flee non-European socialist countries because the U. S. destroys their economies through harsh sanctions in an effort to make the citizens miserable enough to rise up against their governments.
Some socialism is needed in every society but you can also go overboard with it.
No, European countries are capitalist. There is lots of private property, corporations that seek to maximize profits, free markets and large gaps between the rich and poor across Europe.
It’s just same reason like some people want to leave other countries like USA, UK or other countries. People usually leave not just because of socialism, but because they want more freedom, safety, opportunity, or comfort, the same reasons people move from any country, really. And it’s not true that everyone wants to flee, or that those systems automatically drive people away. It depends a lot on the country, the time period, and how the system is run. Just like China, which is socialist but also very developed now and 1 of the countries with the most population in the world.
China is actually communist
Ummm... no.
Communism (n.) A system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs.
China isn’t fully communist. So, in terms of politics, China still follows communist principles, centralized control and no political pluralism.
But economically, not communist anymore. Since the late 1970s (after Deng Xiaoping’s reforms), China introduced market capitalism inside its socialist system. Now, you can own businesses, make profits, buy property, and trade globally. Private companies like Alibaba, Tencent, and BYD exist, something impossible in a fully communist system. The government still owns or heavily controls key sectors (like energy, banking, and telecom), but most of the economy runs on market principles.
So, it’s a hybrid system. The Communist Party keeps political power, but the economy functions like a mix of socialism and capitalism.
Annalee's description is accurate. To provide some perspective, government spending is 36% of the US economy and only 33% of the Chinese economy.
"It’s just same reason like some people want to leave other countries like USA, UK or other countries."
Fleeing is an entirely different animal than just "wanting to leave"..
My colleagues family escaped Soviet Russia because they got tired of asking their father how he was coming home with toilet paper after leaving for days at a time.
They felt barely getting by having an illegal haircutting business in the living room was unsustainable. That it was stressful having to sweep hair under the rug every time someone steped up to the door because people would go missing and conventional wisdom was that the any normal person could actually be kgb looking for a violation.
He had stories that would make your hair stand up.
There's an old joke about marriage.
Marriage is a wondeful institution... as long as you don't mind being in an instutition!
Same would hold for govt systems... it's great for times but you are restricted. If you are a race horse hooked to a plow, you are not happy. If you are an ox, you like it.
We are all different and people seek freedom. Capitalism triggers the jealousy in us.
I've seen china up close and they do very well there... but as well, they work very hard and when they see the wealth of others it's crushing. Communisim isn't fair either...
Because they're oppressive hellhole dictatorships and not communist and socialist countries. They're places where citizens are slaves of the state and seen as expendable numbers in a chart. For example, China's great leap forward or Stalin's collectivization of the farming industry. There was also the mass massacre of homosexuals in Cuba by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, but he looks good on T shirts so lefties ignore that.
Communism and socialism do it work for the masses. Only those in power benefit, while everyone else lives a tough life. People flee that to get something better... Freedom.
Good answer. Lake Venezuela with Nicholas Maduro as the leader.
Because they're not really Communist OR Socialist countries - they're authoritarian dictatorships POSING as something else. A lot of people think they're brilliant when they say " there's never been a Communist or Socialist country in the history of the planet that hasn't failed". Sounds like you know something, doesn't it? Wrong, because there has never BEEN a REAL Communist or Socialist government in the HISTORY of the world. Every... single... one... has been a false front for a dictatorship.
So people flee because they're living under a dictatorship, not what you think it is because Fox told you it is.
imagine waiting all day on a line for toilet paper
No kidding.
Because of bad living standards. There never been a communist country w good living standards, exception might be China but it's capitalist economy with only communist state apparatus and far from ideas of Marx and Engels.
People like having food to eat and don't want to be send to the goulag for wrong think
True
Having the boot of communism on your neck is provably not s pleasant thing.
I think you mean "Why do people flee authoritarian countries?" They are fleeing to social democracies.
What about venezuela?
And it is a socialist regime.
Just because Maduro calls it "socialist" doesn't make it socialist, anymore than Russia practiced Marxist communism. I'm not advocating for either socialism or communism, but authoritarians often come to power via populist promises they label "socialist" or "communist". There are a few fringe socialists in the United States, like the former Seattle councilperson "Kshama Sawant", but they are a small minority of the Democratic party.
And people fled from maduro.
because those countries are brutal dictatorships (who often are only socialist in name only anyways)
The principle is that socialism is the equal distribution of wealth. In reality, it is the equal distribution. of misery. New York has Fouled Around and is about to Find Out. They will soon be twisting on a rope.
A lot of people are partial to keeping their head attached to their bodies.
Because it doesn't work and they turn into third world countries and often times the government murders a huge portion of their own people maintaining control of the people. They always turn into a form of Monarchy.
Probably because they like not going to jail for no reason, being able to eat, being allowed to go to church... things like that.
Good reason
Nobody is fleeing Vietnam. It's beautiful and friendly. More people from the west are moving there than fleeing from there.
Then it's not a country I'm talking about.
It's a communist country that is attracting people.
Obviously not the country I was talking about.
The only communist/socialist countries that people are fleeing are impoverished ones like North Korea and Cuba. They are also fleeing impoverished countries that are more free.
Because they are racist bigoted nazis.
Is what I would say if I was a retard.
Because of authoritarianism and equal misery for all.
because human right actually.
How will it be any different in New York city?
Because the money has run out.
Capitalism>>>Socialism>>>Communism
Rinse and repeat
Ask the New Yorkers in two years!
More like 2 weeks. LOL
Because commie countries are invariably shit.
Simples...
Because they think the grass is greener on the other side
Because it always ends badly.
usa regime changes.
In Venezuela and cuba?
What regime was changed in venezuela?
Who's in charge of Venezuela
don't see many people flee china.
Hundreds of thousands came in under biden.
yeah cause biden was trying to win by letting fresh migrants vote. migrants is the key word here. not refugees. they weren't fleeing. it's just migration. many and it was barely 20k annually so not hundreds of thousands and even that wouldn't be a lot considering 2.3 million people left the usa through migration in these years.
these chinese people weren't "fleeing" china. they were venturing out for economic opportunities.
You're quibbling over one word. LOL
They want freebies from the EU and the USA.
For democracy
