Is 1560 a bad SAT score?

I took the SAT for the first time and got my scores back, 1560 just looks like a horrible number... ; . ; I plan on re-taking it but I'm just curious if this a really bad score. I got 590 on Critical reading, 490 Math, 480 on Writing (47 Multiple Choice, 8 on essay).

My mom is very strict about grades, and I'm scared she's gonna get mad at me for getting a 1560. (I'm going just going to throw it out there that mom can, has, and will beat me. Last time I got an D in school I had bruises on arms and legs from her). a lot of people usually say "who cares if you mom gets mad at you", I care very much about whether or not she gets mad.

So I need lots of honesty about my score. :l

the SAT used to be out of 1600 points so you would have had a near perfect score with 1560.

but now its out of 2400 points. you would need around 1750 for it to be a good score. my sister had a 1760 and she got into 4 out of 7 schools she applied to. she only had two AP classes though and they were a B or C in each. I had a 1920 and 4 AP classes (2 Bs and 2 Cs) and I got into 5 out of 7 schools that I applied to (we both applied to the same schools...we're twins).

most people improve by 150-200 points with the 2nd time they take the test. my sister made a 1600 her first time. but honestly, it depends on where you're looking at. the top three public schools in my state accepted students with an average SAT score ranging from 1550-1750. the top three private schools in my state accepted students with an average SAT score ranging from 1600-1850. AP grades/test scores, GPA, extra curricular activities, and how selective the school is also factors into whether you're accepted or not.

For some reason, this years writing was "harder" and the reading score is fine

If you have an idea of what college you want to go to, look up their average SAT admittance score on collegeboard and try to improve your scores. THAT said, don't go overboard. Studies show most students who retake only go up by a couple of hundred points at most, which is still good but you don't want to push yourself too hard

The writing felt like I was taking the AP language test all over again. I expected my Math to be weak. I had bought an SAT prep book with the intent to study, but I didn't study I just look at how the scoring worked.

On collegeboard they give tips on how to improve it though unless they changed that. I remember logging in one day and it was all different, completely haha. So I'm not sure how much they've changed. But I remember they used to give advice on how to improve

Its alright. Its not great but its not bad either. In terms of letter grades its probably in the range of a low b so its not like getting a d or anything (so hopefully you won't have to worry about getting beat for it). Just take it again and be sure to study really hard. Also, be sure to know what you need to get into the schools that you want to go to so you have a clear goal for what you need to score.

At first I was going to say that your mom is crazy if she didn't like you getting a 1560. Then I did some research and realized that the maximum score isn't 1600 anymore.

I thought they changed it a long time ago, I guess the score change was pretty recent since a lot of people don't know about it :o

I took it in 2004, so it might not have been recent. Retaking it can really help sometimes. I took the ACT twice when I was in high school and scored 4 or 5 points higher the second time I took it (out of 36 possible points). Then again, for me, it was always a matter of how many questions I was able to answer before time ran out. ADHD + standardized tests = frustration (in my experience).

I didn't retake the SAT because most of the schools I was considering accepted the ACT.

Check the schools you're interested in on collegeboard.org, you can see what the average SAT score is of people who are accepted. Generally speaking though, you need to bring up your math and writing scores.

Study and retake it. 1560 is average but its a good starting point.

take a few practice tests, work on speed. read the book for prep at least twice front to back to make sure you know it all and retake it.

Oh shut up. If your mom beats you it is because she doesn't know how the scores work. That is a score for Ivy league schools.

It's average, enough to get you into many colleges, but many of the top colleges will require a 2,100 or higher to be accepted.
