Why do girls sometimes act cold towards guys they like?

I am not generalizing here. I am perfectly aware that not every girl is like that, I just tend to see often how girls try to act cold, and uninterested whether in a relationship with boyfriends, or with guys they like. They will say to him that they don't like him at all, make him jealous, make him do all the work and show to her that she means something to him, and yet again not doing the same in return... What gives? Is it just fear of being hurt, or something more?

You're describing an emotionally abusive bully. She likes being in absolute control. And she accomplishes this by, for lack of a better word, f***ing with your head. This most often works on people who already have issues with insecurity. People like this think they need someone else to make them whole. If an insecure person enters into a relationship with an emotionally abusive bully, the bully will basically do whatever they want, whenever they want, because they know the other person ultimately isn't going to leave. This includes saying hurtful things and basically treating the other person like sh*t.

Emotional bullies often have deep seated issues with insecurity themselves. They overcompensate for this by doing the aforementioned things.

I know some girls are like this because they'e experienced a lot of pain in the past so they become emotionally detached and cold as a defense mechanism they'd rather feel nothing at all than risk getting hurt again.

i don't want to be hurt. I've showed my feelings and ended up getting played or had the guys lose interest. treat him mean keep him keen lol

They don't know how to act. They don't know what to do or say, so they stay silent and their behavior turns awkward.
