Unsung Tourist Sites of Mainland China

Everyone thinks of Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong but I think there are a lot of other parts of China worth exploring. These are a few that I personally would like to visit.

Hunan Province is known for greenery, mountains, and spicy peppers. Many of the mountains in Hunan province were used for the 2009 movie Avatar.

Wulingyuan 武陵源 Scenic Area

Fujian Province is directly across the strait from Taiwan. Marco Polo visited this province on his tour of China and opened the eyes of Westerners to Asia. It's famous for having the most variety of teas within China.

Zhejiang province was one of the important ports for trade between the Ancient China and Japan. A lot of loan words in Japanese came from China through Zhejiang province. Therefore, people in China say that the dialects in Zhejiang are most similar to Japanese.

Lastly I'll make an honorable mention to Harbin in northern China. This is a beautiful city that has a lot of Russian influence. Maybe the only bad thing is that it's kinda cold.

So yeah there are more places in China but those are the ones that I personally want to visit. I've only been to Beijing, Shanghai, and Shandong province so far. Beijing is cool but people there can sometimes have an attitude. As a child of Beijing people I sometimes want to see different parts of China and get a broader sense of what it means to be Chinese. Although Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing are my top destinations in China, I would also want to visit Wuhan, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Tianjin.

That’s a lot of cities! I only been to Beijing and Shanghai on that list. Shanghai is really nice. Beijing is ok but I don’t like Beijing people that much even though my family are Beijing people lol...

Beijing, Shanghai, Hong-Kong and otherbig population centers like that, are always the worst to visit unless you're into rush-hour all the time. Go for a smaller town and experience the culture, food, nature, everything. You will see nothing but frustration otherwise.

All the city pictures make me wonder why humans feel compelled to build build build until the whole planet is concrete, all plants and animals are gone, oxygen has to be purchased in tanks and we can't have a quiet moment because there are 50 billion people on the planet in one big worldwide conglomeration. What's the point? What are we building all this for? Why not live in peace and harmony with nature like primitive tribal people?

I don’t know much about Yunnan province unfortunately. All I know is that it has the most ethnic minorities of all provinces. But I found this beautiful lake as an attraction there: Lugu lake

Me too yeah I’ve been to Beijing like six times I got enough of it. Still want to visit China but just see something different... but not Wuhan though lol.

I haven’t been to xi’an or Chengdu would you recommend?

Chengdu was nice; the primary attraction is the panda center, but that is just good for a couple hours. I would really have liked to get to the mountains west of the city but I'm not sure how the transportation is out that way; about 60 miles west there are peaks up to 21,000 ft. I wanted to try the Szechuan local food but kind of foundered on that. Next time.

Chongquing looked like an interesting city; it was a couple hours west of Chengdu by train and is where I got on my Yangtze cruise. I was just there for a few hours but the modern part of the city looked good from a distance, anyway. Didn't have time to get there.

I liked Xi'an; several things to see, including the terra cotta soldiers. I walked around the inner wall, which is several miles around. Interesting market as well.

I had wanted to go up that peak with the narrow boardwalks over a 3,000 foot drop, which I think is about an hour or so from Xi'an, but I couldn't figure out how to get there and it turned out the weather got bad that day anyway so just as well.

No I feel like China ‘a north and south divide is like America’s west and east divide. Southerners in China speak a different dialect and are all different from each other as they are from the north. Northerners are typically seen as rednecks and political. Southerners are more commercial oriented. Also sometimes they are shorter and darker skin since it’s sunnier there...

No I’m Chinese I don’t like japan. They treat historically mistreated Chinese people. Or like you care though probably since it’s not your heritage. I can do Korea though.

I’m from Washington state too bud I didn’t like the local people there to be honest. I feel like it was just a bunch of Scandinavian drug addicts: void of history and culture. China and Korea both have much more culture. Even japan has more culture although not as much as China or Korea. In my opinion Washington people are not that great.

Besides this MyTake is about UNSUNG attractions which is more so in China. Japan already enjoys too good of a reputation even though I think they are a bad twisted evil culture. I am trying to celebrate places in the world that don’t get celebrated as much.

i will point out there been abuses on both side between japan and china, of course the one that been abused by both china and japan is korea, remember china was responsible for the fall of the Goryeo dynasty, not to mention when tang teamed up the silla dynasty to defeat part Baekje and there allies who were japanese. they've both mistreated each other in my past way before ww2

China has never really attached Japan in the same way as japan has attacked China. The only attack has been from Mongolians living in China. Korea on the other hand a little more complicated. Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla were all fighting each other and Tang Dynasty just step into pick sides. I wouldn’t say that’s mistreating Korea because Korea didn’t exist yet it was a set of warring states. Of course maybe some things bad has happened in history but I don’t consider that period an example of that...

Most people would agree that the Japanese were horrible during ww2, which is whatever one thinks about when it comes to the Chinese Japanese relationship not understanding that japan and China have been friends and enemies through out the centuries. Now the mongols got there butts kicked by the Japanese, of course when it comes to the 3 kingdom’s period in Korea they were warring states and the Wa people or wo people (depending if you take the Korean translation or Chinese translation). Did help all of the kingdoms at one point or another. Same with the han Chinese. There was anothe war in the 1500s between China now japan did take over the lower half of the Korean peninsula and the josen dynasty teamed up with the Ming dynasty in order to fight back agains the Japanese, There been conflict and peace between the nations territories whatever you want to call it, No one in innocent.

Now going to more China as a whole I think dr shun yet sen should have taken power rather than leaving it to general yuan shi Kai (sorry if I’m killing these spellings) I would speculate that had dr shun took power when he should have China may never have become communist. The warlord period was terrible for the people in China and quiet frankly a confusing piece on Chinese history, so so many different ideas on how to governer. But that I feel really sent China over the edge, Honestly I think this covid virus situation would have been a lot more controlled had chan Kai cheks won the Chinese civil war

Yeah not bad I guess. I wouldn’t say the Mongolians got their butts whooped though. They managed to conquer all of Asia and Eastern Europe. They probably just spread themselves too thin and weren’t focused on the Japanese.

Both China and Mongolia are not skilled at overseas combat. Their tradition is more in land based combat. That is why attacking Japan was never a focal point for them. Japan on the other hand is low on resources. They have always wanted to control China for more resources but were not successful. First in 15th century with hideyoshi and then in 20th century with Hirohito.

Of course Chinese have done bad things in history but it was more against Vietnamese or Koreans or against the Chinese themselves. Chinese have caused more damage to themselves than any other nation I think. With all the famines and wars throughout history... it is like Chinese habit to be extra hard on itself...

I do agree though that Chiang Kai Shek had better ideas than Chairman Mao but that is already history can’t change it at this point. And kind of not relevant anymore to modern day politics...

Japan did go through hardship during the heian period. At that time they were starving and feudalistic while China and Korea were prosperous. That’s what sparked hideyoshis campaign to colonize China in 15th century but of course they failed. And not China’s responsibility to feed japan anyway I think...

its not china responsibility it feed japan, the point is neither side is innocent, its like trying to say the french are responsible for the British suffering or the British is responsible for the french suffering neither side is innocent. the idea is to get along the best we can with other nations regardless of history and not hate one another for the past
