"The title is not racist... but if it were a show named "Dear Black people" Blacks would get upset and protest". So either you're saying Blacks are extremely sensitive because they protest stuff that is not racist, or you're just being a hypocrite.

By the way, I'm White, but since I'm not blonde with blue eyes, I've been asked by lots of people "what are you?" and it was mostly Black people who asked me that question, several Hispanics too. Some even arguing that I can't be White because I speak Spanish (da fuq?).

I always hear the argument "look at things from other people's eyes" to kind of explain minorities' experiences, but that same thing applies to everyone. If you think it's only minorities who get asked "what are you?" and that it's only Whites asking that, then you're part of the "problem" you're trying to solve.

The show addresses that actually. The issue isn't that white people don't experience racism, it's that racism against white people doesn't cause white youth to be incarcerated at disproportionate rates or to be shot just for being disorderly.

@cipher42 This is just it though, When black kids in gangs slaughter black kids in gangs every day, Its white peoples fault? Fucking how? Its not a racist issue, Its a cultural issue, A black cultural issue.

So you're saying no black cops exist? That the system is just built upon racism? Why do you people always blame the fact the majority of prisoners are black upon white people, Why can't it just be accpeted, The reason for that, Is literally, Because they commit the most crime.

If some black kids join gangs and commit crimes in their teens, Thats white peoples fault? No, Its a cultural fault in black communities. Thats why black people who have been through it themselves, Served their time and such, So often devote their time to the bettering of their communities and striving for education in young people.

White youth are incarcerated for the same crimes as black youth, Black people just happen to commit crimes more.

What the fuck does the existence of intraracial violence have to do with any of this? No one's talking about that. We're talking about the predominantly white justice system's disproportionate victimization of black people. White people smoke weed at similar rates to black people, yet black people are almost four times as likely to be arrested for it. And that's just one example off the top of my head. So no, the reason for higher levels of incarceration among black people isn't just that they commit more crimes, and if you'd maybe just done a quick google search you'd know that.

@cipher42 Rather then your 'white people smoke just as much weed but black people get done more' argument, How about an actual, Stat based argument.

White people, In America, Make up 77% of the population, So, you'd think they'd make up near 77% of the homocides?, No. They make up 45%. Black people made up 13% of the population, Yet committed 52% of murders. Noone gives a fuck about a softcore legalised drug, We're talking, Genuine murder here. And, And when just over 1/10 of the population, Commits just any many murders as nearly 8/10 of the population, Thats not internalized racism in the law, Thats just a genuine fucking huge cultural issue in that races communities.

Im not saying black people are evil, I have no issues with people of any race. But in the US, The poor communities they grow up in, often Resort them to gangs and crimes.

To deny that black are genuinely the biggest committers of crime, Is to be a retard.

We're not discussing who commits the most crime though. We're talking about disproportionate rates of arrest and imprisonment. Yes, black communities have higher crime rates, but that can be attributed to a whole range of socioeconomic factors that I'd really rather not get into. However, the fact is that black people are absolutely arrested at disproportionate rates to white people, even accounting for different levels of crime.

"Black people are arrested at disproportionate rates to White people"...

You're literally agreeing with me and arguing the very point you agree with?

Commiting crimes and incarceration are linked you know? No shit more black people are going to go to jail for drug offences if more black people are using drugs.

How can you accept that the minority of blacks commit the majority of murders, but not accept the minority of blacks commit the majority of drug offences?

You got some cold hard stats to tell me more White people commit drug crime but aren't arrested for it?

Coincidentially such new movies came to netflix after george soros bought a shitload of shares of netflix. Denying this guy's agenda is no longer a possibility. It is a piece of propaganda constructed by him like the many other propaganda he created.

On a side note, why is the term 'person of color' used at all? It excludes whites from the rest of the races. Improving race relations is the opposite direction of what these terms actually do. Singling us out won't improve anything.

I never said that's what I believe. You asked me why that term was used because it excludes white people. Well, white people are excluded because of how society perceives them, which is the response I gave you. I never said that was my personal opinion. In fact, I've mentioned in several comments and in my Take that a lot of the things we as black people fault white people for isn't really their fault and we ourselves aren't completely organized.

Maybe you shouldn't be so sensitive nor ask questions you aren't quite ready to get the responses to.

No actually I am not allowed to speak about white people and the way they treat Indian people because it's "racism" and "trolling". They don't allow me and delete my questions/opinions etc.

Plus no one is sympathetic towards Indians in the same way people are sympathetic towards black people. All I get is hostile and racist remarks like "your people are sexist, we don't like how you treat your women, you steal our jobs" and "those stereotypes are not racist cause they're true".

Only black people and white people are allowed.

I would love to participate in a thread you started that talked about what you think are challenges, misunderstandings, etc. for you and your community.

Hey, I agree that Apu could be a stereotype. But I think the issue here is that there is little Asian or Indian representation in the media. That will change with time.

It is so funny the way racism works. We are lead to believe PC-culture is all the rage now. Yet in the PC Kingdom of Hollywood, we still get the same old tired weird and silly stereotypes. We were doing so good in the 70s with Asians.

@meatballs21 That's not really fair man. No one creates a "White" stereotype. "Whiteness" does not allow it. Of course, there are stereotypes for French, Irish, etc.

But what do you know of different Indian sub-cultures? Not much, right? Do you make create stereotypes of some specific ethnic group in India? Do you know the difference between North and South India. Muslims and Hindu. There are dozens of ethnic groups and different cultural experiences. I remember dating an Indian woman once. We went to see "Monsoon Wedding", she was from South and she made sure I understood that they did not have the same traditions on weddings.

But in America, one stereotype is representative for a 1.3 billion people.

@RolandCuthbert It's as fair as his belief that every American believes all Indian men are either Raj or Apu.

Of course there are stereotypes for French and Irish because we as people of European Ancestry and living in countries founded by Europeans are descended from them! Do you not think there are stereotypes held among people from South Asia for different countries and regions too?

Asian, especially India and its neighbours, are much newer additions to the multicultural west and as such we don't know as much about them. I am not sure what you are suggesting we do to somehow make up for this.

I can't speak for Indian-African. I have a few Indian friends. They deal with racist crap all the time. But they are not as sensitive as he is. At the same time, they are more confrontational than he is. I am sure if they were here, they would disagree with some things he has said, while agreeing with other things. One thing is for certain, there exists this weird stereotype of an Indian-Americans with this familiar accent working some service oriented job. Timid, nerdy, weird, socially awkward, etc.

My friends are none of these things, yet they run into these stupid stereotypes all the time.

I am sure there are many more stereotypes, types of bigotry, prejudice, etc. that they encounter. But we were talking about media stereotypes. And these two are highly prevalent in our media.

It's nice that Netflix has so much original content that everyone can find stuff that interests them on it so no complaints here.

Asking for someone's background is not annoying; it shows a genuine interest. It's the basic human interaction. Furthermore, citation is needed for your claim that White people ask more often what a person's background is. My observation of the Black community is there is much shame on successful Black people who are not athletes or artists. This is very sad. The people who fall under this category are overshadowed by the "gang bangers."

Several reasons. I don't think anyone, regardless of race, thinks there needs to be one. I also don't think it would be perceived by a lot of people, especially those who are not white even if they aren't black, as white power and white power movements have a history of oppressing others of all ethnic groups. I don't think many would find it entertaining and white people are perceived as being dominating condescending pricks in society even though that's not true for the majority of white people today. Beyond that, white people historically in this country, didn't have as many challenges as other ethnic groups based on their skin color and were never perceived to be at the bottom of the societal chain so there's not much for them to talk about.

There's other reasons but if I had to guess, those would be the top.

I sense that white people get over-blamed for society's ills and that has created some resentment and backlash. It would be nice for minorities to see that reasonable, non-racist white people can develop resentment because of all the BS PC pressure.

White people get blamed because even if they aren't the cause of everything today, they were historically, and they have a tendency to look the other way when minorities are mistreated. Being the majority gives you the power to pick and choose which issues are actually issues.

I feel bad for a lot of white people because they genuinely are not bad people. But it's also annoying being shut down a lot just because the person you're complaining to can't relate.

I perceive a PC/media promoted attitude that white people "owe" black people the time and consideration to try to see things from a black perspective, but black people have no obligation to see things from a white perspective. When you then say that you are promoting equality and racial neutrality, it sounds a bit hypocritical.

You know thats a ridiculous thing to say. A lot of the oppression blacks refer to is noytt pointed towards minorities it is hard to make a living REGARDLESS of your race. Like you said historically whites oppressed others and most wealthy elite people are white but that doesn't mean the oppression is directed towards people of color. That is how you feel because you have an us vs them mentality. They want lower class black and white people to fight in steady of seeing yhe true cause of your problems which is caused by an elite tiny portion of the population and no it isn't discriminatory. If a 7.25/hr job cannot pay your outrageous health insurance bills and you are white you still cannot make a living. And yes there are plenty of whites who sympathize with the struggles within the black community. Thats the reason y'all have equal rights. It took a white majority to vote in your favor.

Let's not pretend that white people decided one day to not be racist. It was a long and hard fought battle from black people that got it done. Let's give credit to where it is due and that's not white people.

@RolandCuthbert It would be about things that you obviously do not yet understand. It might address, e. g., how some interactions between the races start with so much hostility that someone like you doesn't listen to what is being said.

Just stop whining holy hell there is racism EVERYWHERE it is part of life. It is not my responsibility to apologize for anything. If you want to lump me into one category as a racist white guy that is your problem not mine. You don't know anything about me or my interactions with people. You are the one making accusations with nothing ti back it simply because I disagree with yiur race baiting article.

@Snaketoad And a "White" guy killed his wife in Connecticut. A "White" girl killed her stepdad because he came to collect his belongings from their home.

What I don't understand about racists is this. . . what do you exactly want? If people are gathered together to talk about how to relate across cultural experiences, what is your purpose?

@Olderwiser you see that is the thing. PC media is blaming you. There isn't anything I can do for you there man. If you see the boogey man, the only who can control your imagination is you. You haven't watched a single episode. You just reacted to the title. Its amazing.

I don't know how to relate to you, when you are determined not to have that kind of communication.

Dear White People does not cast "White" people in a bad light, while making "Blacks" angelic.

That is exactly the point of the series. And somehow, someway, you are determined to miss that.

@imtheman0048 I see your point about how there is this shared suffering. I agree with you there. But there are a couple of things. "Black" people, Asians, Latinos, Women, etc., etc. are not going to be thankful for the granting of rights they should have had the moment they were born in this nation.

That is kind of a backwards way of looking at things. Everything "we" have, "they" have was earned through blood, through sweat, and through tears.

The second thing, well. . . one of our biggest issues is not talking about shared concerns and shared experiences. We seem to think this is understood. If it were, we wouldn't have so many silly stereotypes about each other. "White" or "Black". . . and let's not forget Asian, Latin, American Indian, into infinity and beyond.

But the other things you highlight, well, we have some agreement there.

Bias? I am not the one complaining about PC culture without ever seeing the show. In fact, one of the points so brilliantly made about the show is that everything is not about "White" people.

But maybe you might tune in one day. . . and actually witness that.

Yep, there are shows where the topic is mostly about "Black" dysfunction. . . but hey, feel safe in your echo chamber.

Guys, this is simply a marketing problem.

Apparently this show makes valid points about racial relationships in the US and could be interesting to watch. I assume whoever created this show wants people to watch it... but they have a very big issue with simple marketing concepts: in order to market a show towards an audience, you have to make it palatable. And it starts with the title.

Now, since most of the media is PC propaganda, normal people who have not been indoctrinated yet are sick and tired of being called rayciss, bad terrible persons, and guilty of crimethink all day long while they are just normal people.

The media these days behaves like a constantly nagging bitchy girlfriend. Nag, nag, nag... and the sane response is "just shut up."

So, we normals quickly develop a bullshit filter to avoid content (movies, books, online content...) which will, ultimately be cringey, disappointing and not worthy of our time.

Any hint that we're going to be ponderously lectured YET AGAIN live EVERY FUCKING DAY about how evilbad we are means we're just gonna change channels, close the browser window, or won't buy your book. Because we're all way past the PC bullshit overdose point. Oh, and we'll also vote for Trump just to spite you.

A title like "Dear white people" trips my bullshit filter. It makes me believe the show's gonna be yet more PC propaganda. So I don't watch it.

If the producers wanted to market their show also towards normal sane whites, then the fact they were clueless enough to pick such a title means they are also clueless about their audience's tastes, which increases the probability the show is going to suck.

Whether it is PC propaganda or a well-written show which would be interesting to watch is irrelevant! I have not seen it yet. Maybe I'm missing out? I'll never know. I'm not criticizing the show, only its title.

I read your post. Now read mine. Maybe you don't have a firm grasp of the English language. Maybe things like common sense and rational thinking allude you.

But you do not start this thread. You did respond to it. And if you are scared, frightened or angered by my confrontation of you, then block me like the coward you are and move on with your life.

This thread is about the show. Yet you brought your baggage in here about PC "White" blaming culture. So if you are trying to connect the show to your ax grinding, you have failed. And if you want to talk about PC culture, create your own thread. I don't see why you bothered to stop by since you are so scared of an actual discussion.

@RolandCuthbert I thought this was the stimulus to start discourse that everyone CLAIMS that they want. And when the poster said, "Beyond that, white people historically in this country, didn't have as many challenges as other ethnic groups based on their skin color and were never perceived to be at the bottom of the societal chain so there's not much for them to talk about," I responded. Understand?

Well, I don't know why Elarra answered you the way she did. I cannot speak for her. Of course, you can create your own show "Dear Black People". Oh, I missed a post by yours. Maybe that's why things got off to such a bad start.

So let me respond. Of course, I don't know much detail about the real "White" experience right? You and I are much, much older than most of the folks here. I learned about the "White" experience where everyone learns about it. In the media. The Brady Bunch, Father Knows Best, The Dick Van Dyke Show, etc. After I grew up and matured and learned all of this was just a bunch of nonsense, I ran into a few "White" people who actually did talk about their real experience.

Some of them had experiences that mirrored mine. Others had experiences that were much worse than anything I could had imagined.

So feel free to share your experience on being "White".

      It should be interesting.

I feel you think you are not permitted to talk about your experience.

In my discussion groups this is the problem we started to develop. There were very few "White" people coming forward talking about uniquely "White" experiences. One of the participants was a "White" professor of psychology. He had a childhood and upbringing that bordered on being hellish.

And he insisted that if he did not find the academic field he would have been dead or in a meth induced vegetable state. The things he recounted to me were somewhat familiar seeing that I had a poor upbringing also. But some of the things he talked about were just beyond my ability to grasp.

Now of course he went on to talk about his experiences with other cultures and groups. He married a "Black" woman and was violently rejected by members of her community. Her family welcomed him with open arms. With her it was the reverse. Community wise, they found some acceptance. But his family rejected her outright. I could go on, but. .

I agree, there might be. The reason would be that it's the usual punching up/punching down thing, where speaking truth to power (a majority) is empowering but belittling the powerless (e. g. minorities) is cruel.

I think you missed the point. You spent an inordinate amount of time addressing the title of the show. I think of there's any outrage it is directed at the content of the show not the title. We are well aware of the meaning of the phrase "dear white people". The title isn't racist.. just a bit condescending and snarky. Like you need to explain to me why its my fault some people of my race are racists or that its my fault Europeans essentially conquered the world and yes a disproportionate amount of wealth lays in yhe hands of a sliver of the white population. Im tired of talking about race.

You mentioned that the "white boyfriend" hung out with the girl's "black friends." Why can't it just be the "boyfriend hung out with her friends?" It just frustrates me beyond belief.

It is. My ex was often referred to as 'Elle's white boy'. And if anyone he worked with found out I was black then they stopped talking to him. And then the worst part is that people will actually get mad at you for not disclosing the race of your partner like they're entitled to know or something.

look... FROM A NON-WHITE PERSPECTIVE: that title is racist and it seems the New Media (Netflix, Youtube) is doing the liberal agenda of emasculating the WHITE Population of US, over and over again...

only at the ridiculous USA there is such a thing like #BlackLivesMatters which is actually bullshit, the same way this show is probably a bullshit and if there was a show named "Dear Black People", there would be a riots in the US streets... shame on you and stop being biased!!!

Attribute that to either what typically comes out of the mouths of colored women after "white dudes," or the fact that I'm addicted to all things Ritz, but there you go.

What rights do blacks not have in America? How did rich blacks achieve their wealth? These are questions you can't answer because you have no answer. Asians who come here are successful, but not the blacks in the inner cities because they don't want to work hard and just play the victim. Also whites get discriminated on a daily basis. Ever heard of affirmative action? Too many whites and not enough other races. Instead of hiring based off skill they hire unqualified people just to equal the race ratio.

@cipher42 I consider it pandering because it played on hackneyed tropes. It may has well have been a collection of Buzzfeed or Tumblr quatations. That's essentially what it was.

They knew it would play with their audience because it mirrored their audience, and they knew it would play with critics because of runaway political correctness.

K so I guess you really didn't pay much attention. While yes, a lot of the material was issues already discussed by other liberal websites (which, by the way, in no way makes it any less valid), the show actually did discuss a lot of less common topics, and in a very nuanced way. For instance, it brought up the issue of appeasement versus resistance, in a way that showed the validity in both arguments. Also the discussion of racism, colorism, and homophobia within the black community, and issues like that. Like, the show discussed divisions and issues within the black community as much as issues of racism from white people.

I'm white and all I have to say is that some people discriminate, others don't. Nothing we can do. Sure white people may have more qualities in my opinion.. I've always found white people to be more attractive honestly. My fiance is only 30% black but I think he's gorgeous. It's just 8 times outta 10, The white person is more attractive. White people also earn more money than black people. So it may not be "All" about us, but it is Mostly about us.
