Why does society saying skinny is beautiful?

It seems like I always see girls talking about how they think they are fat and they need to lose weight... And to me these girls look perfect. It seems society has corrupted women into thinking bing skinny is beautiful. My sisters like watching top model and I am appalled that people actually think these women's bodies are beautiful. They look emaciated and alien-looking. I personally think that curvier women are ideal. No, not fat, but thick. (I would post links but I don't have enough xp.) I wanted to here your guys opinions on this subject. Please do not become offended if you are skinny. I have nothing against you... It is just my opinion

Well please forgive me for this answer, but you hit a spot

short answer: social construction and the neccessities of a society thus being implimented through norms and practices of the media taking hold of said societies culture.

Lon answer: it is all the belief of the society and how beauty is pressented; whatever the image of health and healthy living is, the slight problem with this idea is that depending on the society the opinion of what beauty really is will differ quite drastically both in how it is reppressented and how such beauty is treated. First though why is skinny beautiful in our society is because their is less need for weight therefore being heavy will be portrayed as a taboo. The opinion of what beauty is also is linked into historical backgrounds; larger women were preffered in the 500 through 1700s as the preffered and ideal form of beauty due to the need of population growth due to economic and sustainable (another example would be Germany prior to WWII as it was preffered to build up a society before starting a war), this however slowly shifted as the desire to improve a societies population and economic standing shifts (any matriarchal society specifically going through this phase will face this situation and the ideal form of beauty will also change). But then that which is mass culture (not to be mistaken for pop culture) and upper class opinions will overproport the ideas of the changing society usually pulling them to the extremesdue to the value that can be drawn from such a change making that which once was healthy not healthy anymore and that which is never healthy. So in short terms the reason why Western culture has this whole fixation for skinny=beauty is due to cultural needs being overpowered by media and what will be the most cost efficient selling point (as my former marketing teacher once said "the best type of marketing is that which allows the consumer to not think but rather let the marketing to think for them").

Because skinny is harder than being curvy. It takes effort to keep the weight off, and not much effort to put some curves on.

By focusing on "skinny" as the hard-to-attain standard of beauty, it makes an industry out of those who can "help" you to be beautiful. That's big business. Whereas if curvy was beautiful, anyone near a McDonalds could be beautiful.

The same sort of thing could be found in primitive cultures where food was scarce. Curvy was rare, therefore curvy was beautiful.

Ultimately, it's a money thing. There's more money to be made by telling women it's hard to be beautiful and that they need help, and they have to pay money to get that help.

I think it has to do with the media definitely. Like most people generally assume that someone who is skinny is automatically the picture of health. But that is always not true. And right now we are being told that we must be in the best health, not that that is a bad thing, it's just that there is a lot of misconceptions and misinformation out there. Girls are tricked by the media into thinking they have to be a size 00 because that is what everyone else looks like. That is what the magazines, movies and TV want us to believe. But in fact most girls aren't that tiny. Most are in the middle somewhere. There are naturally skinny women, but that is not the average. I think that if someone is skinny naturally that is good, but if not, they shouldn't starve themselves to be that way. It will only end up hurting them. Instead of people taking part in healthy habits, people are doing destructive things to get the 'healthy look'. So I think that is why girls are so afraid to be fat.

The clothing industry is also to blame, women's sizes are so inconsistent. Like I am only 5'6", and I find it hard to find pants and tops that are long enough. Plus some shirts are so small, and others are too big. It makes it hard for anyone to gauge what true size they are. So some girls may very well wear a large t-shirt, but she may be really skinny. It's just how the clothing manufacturers make the clothes.

It's good to know that there are guys out there who love curvy women! So many guys on here have no idea what fat actually is. I mean they judge it based on weight, but 110 on one girl might be the same as 145 on another. It just depends on the body type, age, height and genetics. I happen to be in the high weight range. But I carry the weight well, I mostly have it in the boobs, butt and thigh areas. So really it's hard for people to judge health and desireability just based on weight. But unfortunately some girls will focus too much on the weight and not their body composition for gauging how fit or unfit they are. And instead focus on getting the lowest weight.

I wish society would stop acting like it absolutely has to be one type of beauty over another. Why can't both be beautiful? You seem to think you're doing something awesome here by praising curvy girls, but how do you think this post makes skinny girls feel? You're any better than society is by acting like curvy girls are better than skinny girls? Seems a bit hypocritical to me. What if the girl is just naturally skinny? Is that really her fault? Is it really her fault that she has a feature that just so happens to be in favor of the perspective of society? No.

I'm tired of society and men acting like there can only be one type of look that is beautiful. Beauty is diversity. That is my opinion. People should stop contributing to the idea of exclusivity by saying that one feature is better than another such as lighter skin being better, straighter hair being better, curvy or skinny being better, tall or short being better, tan or pale being better. Why can't people see that they all are beautiful in different ways!? Say there is a vibrant golden yellow and a radiant fiery orange. They are both appealing, gorgeous colors. Should you try to break them down layer by layer to figure out which one is better? No, just accept them for what they are and understand that their differences is what makes them beautiful. Same thing with women. Stop trying to break us down and decide which look is best. We are all beautiful in different ways.

idk why they do this to white girls. I think society does this partly to keep women down. most adult women are not naturally model thin, but if they are pressured to be that way they will feel insecure because they can't live up to those standards. they won't be confident and they'll have low self esteem and won't reach their own potential if they obsess over getting to a body type that's unnatural and unattainable for them.  I used to be friends with a white girl that was obsessed about her weight. she wasn't overweight and actually had a cute shape but she would diet trying to be a size 2. nothing's wrong with being skinny if that's your natural body type but I don't get why people feel the need to strive to be that way if it's not for them. if you have to spend 3 hours a day working out then that is not your natural body type! just stop! skinny doesn't automatically mean healthy and it doesn't automatically mean beautiful. I have skinny friends who hate their size and wish they were thicker.

Its rather simple. The Media. Woman are very emotional. their actions are driven towards this. Everything from the media tells woman they need to be thin, Actors and models waste 1000s on their bodies and it gives a false standard. Men Desire most actors because of their beauty so its tough compition. Its even worse for woman with bad familes and broken homes. They never get the attion they need growing up to teach them its OK to be them. When girls learn everything from Sitcom TV shows, movies and magazines it really beats up any self asteem.

Media teaches woman to be thin, to wear tons of makeup and to have perfect skin ( when 90% of magazine photos are photoshoped, I do graphic design so I know from an inside view how that works ). It teaches Woman that she needs to go out, clubing, men are all stupid and that we don't care so they shouldn't either because we are replacable. And thanks to all this we have todays world. People don't know how to love, how to make relationships work. why do you think the marriges end so much in the USA?

But I agree with you, I don't think beauty is being skinny. every woman has their own frame. I like woman who are within 110- 130/40 maybe 50 depending on how tall they are. She dosnt have to have huge fake t*ts or makeup on. I love a pretty set of eyes, darker hair long or short and a pretty smile. Because when your older her body will change but you will always rem that smile.

totally agree - if we look back in history - being curvy was considered beautiful and desired. it was a sign of wealth. People wanted to be fair , redhead and curvy - now people want to be fake tan, blond and skinny. its funny and scary to watch people try to change how they look just because we all want to be something we are not. it goes through your head - would my eyes look bigger if I  lost more weight. etc - right now I'm trying to lose 2 stone - why? because I want skinny legs not skinny skinny - I want to be a uk size 8 - why? well I want to have hourglass figure right now I'm spilling a bit over at the stomach. I'm eating healthy and I'm jogging - I'm not in  a rush to lose it I just want a healthier lifestyle .im a natural redhead , I could easily want to be like megan fox - who doesn't she s hot! but why be something you can't - its not pretty to be fake.although we don't admit it half enough we always want to be something we are not- white people want to have natural dark skin so they wear fake tan , while the media use european models in india so , indian people (some not all)use bleaching creams to  be white. life is crazy - if you are smart you ll just accept yourself as you are - no  plastic surgery  and no fake tan. be the person you are meant to be. sadly that doesn't always happen :(

It's a marketing scheme that has brainwashed all women in some way or form. Have you ever met a girl who has low self esteem? Chances are you have cause the majority of them are so fixated on their body image, they make themselves sick over it. Insecurity issues among ladies is high, too. I can't begin to tell you how many girls I've met who are extremely self conscious.

They are slaves to the retail industry. Everywhere they look they see magazines, TV shows and movies portraying girls in such a way that helps sell merchandise.

Playing upon a human's emotions and being able to manipulate them to purchase products was introduced in the early 1920's. You can thank Joseph Goebel's Nazi propaganda war machine for some of it. The retail industry knows if they catch prospective customers during their youth stages, they can train them to become future customers. Think about it...youth can be manipulated because their brains are like a sponge. Marketers know this and thus do what ever they can to display their products in a youthful manner.

A combination of peer pressure and psychology. Being thin is highly prized in societies where food is abundant, and where being thin is difficult maintain. In societies where food is scarce, being fat is considered a symbol of power, wealth, and fertility.

I think it depends on the girl. There are some girls who are naturally thin and the wouldn't look as good with extra weight. Then there are girls who look very good with a little extra woman. I personally like having a little more woman to fondle. If I can pick her up, I'm happy.

i know I'm not fat.. but I think its so dumb when girls call themselves fat, because girls that  say that usually just want the attention of someone else telling them that they are not fat.. this girl would do it so much, I came to a point where I waned her to stop saying it.. because its a pet peeve of mine.. she said.. This stinks, because I struggle with attaining a skinnier figure all of the time, although I don't want to be exactly stick thin, especially since I'm like 5'9", but yeah it bugs the hell out of me constantly...However, ironically, I always encourage health and positive self-esteem in others, regardless of their outward appearance... No sense in being a healthy weight and having a beautiful figure, If you don't love yourself then you're just existing instead of living. I wish I could swallow a dose of my own medicine though, and I'm trying, but I often feel gross.

Good luck and give your sisters my blessing, and keep promoting positive self-esteem to them. They need it more than you could ever imagine.

I am curvy myself! I think more men should try and date curvier women and that are healthy. I swear I look at some women and I just don't want to be that thin at all. I don't know why so many guys like guys that thin. It is a shame that the media and society influence people to think that being that small is ideal if it is not the natural way you are built. I think because of technology and media and their message on being skinny is why there are so many douchebags in the world that would never want to date a curvier female becuase from  all of  the media hype.

It is this way because that's how marketing and media shows it.

For example I work for a large chain gym. I work as a salesman at this gym. What do salesmen do in order to get people to purchase a gym membership? They feed off of other peoples insecurities about how they look. If you take a fairly healthyy curvy girl that is super concious about how she looks and tell her that she needs to lose weight and feed on her insecurities, chances are she will purchase the membership.

(I do not do this. This is what a lot of my colleagues do. It works in making numbers and selling memberships, but I refuse to put aside my morals for making monthly numbers.)

Just personal experience as to why females feel the need to weight a hundred pounds. It's everywhere in our society.

i like thin, and to be honest, it's almost the same for guys, we have to get big and dominant. if a girl can't manage to stay healthy, and just eats and watches TV that's her fault.

when I see a chubby girl I see someone who just wants to cruise life the easy way, I assume it's the same for other aspects of her life.

it's like the only thing they have to do to attract the opposite gender, if that's too much, then try and earn money, be educated and strong minded... I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I think that every body type should be embraces and that women and men should stop putting each other down because their body types. If you like curvier women that's fine, people say I'm thick but personally I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This one guy told me I had a fat ass and another guy told me I didn't. Personally I think I am just fit and well endowed as a femalke, but I don't think that everyone should look like me. I even been asked if I had breast implants because people couldn't beleive that I have a flat stomach with big DD breast.

I want to know why people assume just because a girl is skinny she's unhealthy?  Or why if a girl is skinny and looks healthy she's seen as less desirable and compared to a 12 year old.  How is that fair to people, like me, who have fast metabolisms, eat like normal people, and work out to stay healthy and in shape?  It's not my fault that other people (women and men) let themselves go.  And I'm saying let themselves go because that's true, kim kardashian is curvy and I've heard plenty of girls call themselves curvy when they're really just overweight, having big boobs and an @ss doesn't necessarily make you curvy because in most cases that's not true.  But that's just my opinion.

Society has corrupted everyone into thinking skinny is the way to go; guys complain about their weight as well.

I think the idea is changing though - as being healthy is becoming more emphasized than being a size 0.

Plus, I think curvy girls (not fat,) but women with meat in the right places are viewed as being more sexy than the anorexic figures that used to dominate. Not to say really petite women aren't desired - it just isn't as apparent as it used to be I believe.

Naturally thin is okay but being skinny like a model is f***ing disgusting. I don't know why people think that bones protruding is attractive; it's not. I think being a bit overweight is more attractive than that.There's a difference between being healthy and being too skinny.
