My grandfather addressed my grandmother as "kid" for the entirety of their friendship/courtship. They married when my grandmother was 21 and stayed married until she was 85 when my grandfather passed away.
So...I wouldn't say it automatically means friend zone.
I called my boyfriend kid/child all while we were friends (no idea that's what my grandparents did) then we started dating.

No, not at all. Some people may take it that way, but for me, I only say that to someone I'm sweet on, and know she's a little friendly towards me as well, or she'd be a little angry at being called 'kiddo.' Usually I also chuck them under the chin or something when I say, 'kiddo.'
Don't over-think the situation. If you enjoy his company and would like to see things develop, then continue seeing him. If the "kiddo" thing annoys you -- then just tell him.
