Now that women are mostly liberated a significant amount of them choose not to have children. Has motherhood been compelled for most women throughout history?
I think it's more than wanted vs expected because people actually NEEDED to have kids especially with high death rates, you were expected to have children and you were expected to want to have those kids who'd continue the bloodline and thus keep any property/power in the family OR to continue working and take care of the family - obviously people wanted to have kids but i don't think anyone wanted to have kids JUST for the sake of it, i would assume there were usually economic reasons behind it

having a child been too important for lot of old civilisations so yes
they wanted kids
Our only purpose on this planet, biologically, is to propagate our genes.
They didn't have a lot of choice, as there was no contraception.
