Was this just a friendly hug or something more?

I was saying goodbye (for a long time, possibly forever God forbid) to a guy I like (he likes me too, I think). I gave him a hug - he is taller than me and kind of leaned his head down on my right shoulder and wrapped his arms around me mid-back (gently) and held on for a while - I held him closer and he shifted closer as well. Then when I let go he put his hand on my shoulder and looked at me with this really strong emotional look (sadness, smiling, etc.) on his face for a minute before I had to look down.

When I hugged him the second time he trailed his hand across my left side/waist as he let go and looked down at his hand and then just looked at me.

I'm guessing those were not just friendly hugs? Keep in mind that I don't often hug guys and he knows this. It's not like he grabbed my waist or anything but...yeah. Just curious.

Clarification: when I say he leaned his head down, I mean that he put his head down on my shoulder (he's about a head taller than me) so that his face and head were half-buried against my neck/shoulder...I guess like he wanted to be comforted or that he was really upset to leave me. I wasn't expecting it. He totally initiated that part.

I think you are already spot on. If the emotions from the first hug didn't solidify that idea, then the second hug should have. When a guy goes in for the second hug and the two of you aren't dating I would say you mean something more to him. In my experience I have gone in for a second hug to show that person I had interest in them and to also feel them close to me. I hope whatever happens he isn't gone forever but, that is always up to the two of you. Hope this helps!

Does it make any difference that I was the one who hugged him? (Keep in mind, like I said, I don't normally hug guys so he might have felt weird initiating...but he definitely felt okay about keeping the hug long and not-all-that-platonic.) the second hug was about 10 min after the first one after he walked me to my car (looking miserable the whole time).

No. some of us guys don't understand women too well but, we all know what a long hug means despite who initiated.

Any departure is loss. Wouldn't we feel sad even at the thought that a (same sex) classmate we might never see again?

Yes, true - it's just that neither of us reacted this way to saying goodbye to anyone else (by far).

Some are a little more precious than others. A lady friend of mine, aged 37, died the other day. I felt very sad (not because I was attracted to her in a sexual way, but because she was such a nice person!)

Do you think so? I'm pretty sure he feels very strongly toward me in any case...he called me yesterday and said "I miss you soooooooo much" and the whole time sounded like...well, raw emotion in his voice. Don't think I've ever heard a guy sound like that on the phone. Thanks by the way :) this made me really happy.
