I m a housekeeper at a small hotel and there s this maintenance guy who just kinda walks around, and every morning he ll greet me, and say hi every time he passes me, and I ll just smile back, anyway today as I was leaving he smiled at me then winked at me, and I was kind of taken back so all I did was smile but what do you think it means? He s also a lot older than I am, so I don't know if I should be weirded out that a guy in his early 40s winked at me or flattered

It means he likes you, but you are probably his daughter's age, and he would never do anything with you, but you are attractive, like he can't say about his daughter.
Be nice, and talk to him. Maybe he thinks you are a lot like his daughter, and maybe he is lonely, and his wife passed, or who knows!! Find out, just talk to him, and see!
I flirt with a couple of the young ladies at work, not because I want to do anything with them, or date them, but they are young, kind of 'nerdy' and socially awkward, and they don't seem to have many friends.
I kind of just talk, and flirt, a little, just to make them more comfortable, talking with guys. I try to make them laugh, and find out what they like, and are interested in.
Neither are dating, and they just kind of shut down, when I ask them why!! Both are very attractive, smart, professional, young ladies, so I don't know why they don't have at least a few guys, and even a girl or two, wanting to be with them!
A casual wink, or even a little look, and smile, should be a compliment, a friendly gesture.

Be flattered, he comes from an Era that a wink could mean many things to many people, it is quiet, private nod that you are looking very nice today, typically very respectful in its meaning, rarely is it seedy. If it was a very long and a full face wink then it is a little bit more seedy.
It is also a way to say hello to someone if others are around and he doesn't want to make you feel uncomfortable because of other around you. This day and age, people gossip and make fun of other people just because of the people they talk to, example "OMG, she talks to the cleaner, she's probably fucking him!". He may just be being polite.

Don't read in to it too much, its a lonely life being a cleaner, he probably doesn't want to loose the little regular contact he has with someone because people will talk and make you feel it is wired.

Probably just flirting. The fact that you smile his way every day may give him an indication that you are a nice person and approachable. The wink is a way for him to see your reaction to him flirting with you. If you smiled back and blushed then he may think you like the flirting or are a bit accepting to it. Or if he isn't high on himself, he may think he embarrassed you. But, you should maybe ask him why he winked at you. You won't offend him, but it shows you don't mind talking to him. Or maybe he wants to get more of a reaction from you than just "wow she smiles". He might be like, "does she have a voice and can she talk? So what can I do to get different reaction?" At any rate, maybe say hello or something and see where it goes from there. If you're not interested in anything more because of his age or you don't find him attractive, than you just have to let him know when it gets that far (if it gets that far).

Well I do tend to wink if I like someone (not in a sexual way). It's more like blinking both my eyelids but I wind up winking - been that way since my teens. But I sure don't mean that as a pass or disrespect.

Well a wink whether from an older man or younger is a wink. The wink can mean many things that don't mean disrespect or otherwise.

I won't make much of a situation that is a one off. In this case I'd wait up for something more to happen if it were to before really thinking about it :)

Sometimes a wink can be ment as friendly not sexual. Guys wink at each other over jokes and what not, unless there are other indications that he's showing interest I wouldn't read much into it.
